Over 30,000 Sabah smallholders achieve MSPO certification by 2025

The Sun7 hours ago
KOTA KINABALU: More than 30,000 smallholders in Sabah have achieved Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil certification across over 191,000 hectares as of April 2025.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor confirmed the certification rate now stands at 97.62%, ranking among the highest nationwide.
'This underscores collective progress and emphasises the importance of continued collaboration between government agencies, industry players, and smallholders to sustain and expand sustainable palm oil production,' he said.
Hajiji stressed the crucial need for Malaysia to advance certification and traceability efforts to maintain international recognition and credibility.
'In Sabah, we are making progress where about 97 per cent of the planted area and over 92 per cent in Sarawak are now certified under the MSPO.'
'However, we must push toward 100 per cent inclusion, particularly for independent smallholders.'
'We are fully cognisant of the challenges the industry faces,' he stated in his speech delivered by Sabah Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe.
The Sabah government has adopted the Jurisdictional Approach for Sustainable Palm Oil launched in 2015 to achieve full certification by 2030.
'This approach is more than administrative in nature,' Hajiji explained.
'It is also a governance mechanism that allows all players in the palm oil value chain to work together under a unified framework.'
Sabah maintains its leadership with 1.48 million hectares under cultivation and annual output exceeding 4.2 million tonnes of crude palm oil.
The state alongside Sarawak accounts for over 55% of Malaysia's total oil palm planted areas.
Hajiji emphasised that this success resulted from decades of hard work and collaboration across the entire supply chain.
'It is a testament to our shared commitment to balance economic development with environmental stewardship and social progress,' he added.
The palm oil industry sustains livelihoods for more than 300,000 Malaysians and supports over 85,000 smallholders directly and indirectly.
Hajiji expressed confidence in the industry's continued growth through strategic investment and strong governance. – Bernama

Singaporeans make up bulk of Johor's 14 million tourist arrivals

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor recorded over 14 million foreign arrivals in the first six months of 2025, said state unity, culture and heritage committee chairman K. Raven Kumar. He said Singaporeans made up the largest group, with more than 11 million visitors recorded between January and July this year, the Straits Times reported. "Besides Singapore, we are also seeing many visitors from Indonesia, China, India, the Philippines, European countries and South Korea. "In fact, from January until March, more than two million tourists, including Malaysians, stayed in Johor for more than one night," he said after launching Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery's Works On Paper: Art Inside The Wallet exhibition at Kompleks Warisan Sultan Abu Bakar on Aug 19. The numbers were an encouraging sign for the state government and local tourism industry players as the state prepares for Visit Johor Year 2026 (VJY2026), Raven said. He said efforts were under way to promote small towns across Johor's 10 districts as potential tourism destinations. "There is a lot of potential in small towns to be part of our tourism destinations for VJY2026, as many are near attractions such as waterfalls, and they offer delicious local delicacies. "As part of the government's effort to promote small towns in other districts, we are holding state-level events such as Majestic Johor and Festival Zapin outside Johor Baru," he said. The state government has set a target of attracting 12 million tourists to Johor in 2026 by upgrading tourism products and organising events to strengthen the state as a key destination. Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery's Works On Paper: Art Inside The Wallet exhibition will run for six months until Feb 18, 2026, at the complex.

Malaysia shifts to value creation economy under 13MP to boost growth

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must transition to a value creation-based economy by increasing economic diversification to raise the ceiling of national growth. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan stated that the focus will be on high-value technology and innovation-based sectors and industries. 'This transition will cultivate a culture of creation, in line with the aspiration to position Malaysia as a leading producer of consumer products for export worldwide.' 'This is in line with the shift from the concept of 'Made in Malaysia' to 'Made by Malaysia',' he said when winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat today. Amir Hamzah confirmed priority will be given to boosting high-growth, high-value industries including semiconductors, energy transition, and digital industries. 'This strategy is aligned with the New Industrial Master Plan, the National Energy Transition Roadmap, and the National Semiconductor Strategy.' He added that agri-food and agro-commodity subsectors will continue to be enhanced to ensure food security and reduce imports. Rare earth elements, the green economy, the blue economy, and carbon capture initiatives will become new sources of economic growth. High-impact strategic sectors will focus on strengthening tourism, the halal industry, and the orange economy. The air transport industry, global services, financial services, distributive trade, logistics, and sports will be further boosted. 'To boost the growth of these sectors and industries, the support ecosystem will be improved through stronger policies and governance, provision of incentives and financing, as well as infrastructure development.' 'This move will support quality investments and industrial scaling,' he explained. – Bernama

Bursa Malaysia Up 70 Points Since Tabling Of 13MP

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia has recorded an increase of 70 points up to today since the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) was tabled, said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. Amir Hamzah, who is also the acting Economy Minister, said the rise in Bursa Malaysia's performance reflects the market's acceptance of the 13MP. 'We must look at the data in its entirety and not rely on a single data point,' he said when winding up the debate on the motion on the 13MP in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday. Amir Hamzah was responding to a query from Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (PN-Machang) about the market and Bursa Malaysia's reaction to the tabling of the 13MP. Commenting on claims that the 13MP lacks a 'wow factor', Amir Hamzah said the document must be studied in depth, and efforts to reshape development cannot simply depend on existing policies and approaches that have long been in place. 'The 13MP sets out priorities to implement several reforms, including restructuring the economy towards a value-creation-based economy and transitioning into an artificial intelligence-driven nation. 'The 13MP also outlines education reform, labour market reform, housing reform, healthcare reform, and public service reform as the government's key focus areas,' he said. Amir Hamzah emphasised that the 13MP was designed using a multi-dimensional approach across four pillars to ensure policies are not viewed in silos, but instead emphasise the interlinkages between various aspects of development. 'These pillars are strengthening economic diversity, enhancing social mobility, accelerating public service reform, and improving people's wellbeing and environmental sustainability.
