Quantum Startup BTQ Proposes More Energy Efficient Alternative to Crypto's Proof of Work
A recently published journal article by researchers at BTQ, a startup working to build blockchain technology that can withstand attacks from quantum computers, has proposed an alternative to the Proof of Work (PoW) algorithm involving quantum technology.
Proof of Work is a blockchain consensus mechanism that secures the Bitcoin network. Participants crunch through vast amounts of math problems to validate transactions. Some have criticized the process as being too energy-intensive, while others have argued the opposite.
Quantum computing involves moving away from a process reliant on binary code, ones and zeros, which open and close transistor gates. Quantum bits (qubits) exist in multiple states simultaneously, vastly increasing computational power to the point where modern-day encryption built by classical computers – reliant on transistors and binary code – is threatened.
In its paper, BTQ researchers propose a quantum-based alternative called Coarse-Grained Boson Sampling (CGBS). This method uses light particles (bosons) to generate unique patterns—samples—that reflect the blockchain's current state instead of hash-based mathematical puzzles.
The random sampling of these patterns would create encryption, in the same way that random numbers form the backbone of encryption made by classical computers.
Boson-sampling was initially created to demonstrate something called quantum supremacy, a test that determines when a mathematical equation is too complex for a classical computer.
These samples are grouped into categories, called bins, which make it easier to validate the results and confirm the miner's work.
This approach replaces traditional cryptographic puzzles of PoW with quantum sampling tasks, significantly reducing energy consumption while ensuring the network remains secure and decentralized.
While BTQ's proposal is theoretically interesting, achieving it would require a hard fork of the Bitcoin network with miners and nodes replacing their existing ASIC-based hardware (computers solely made for the PoW consensus mechanism) with quantum-ready infrastructure.
This would certainly be a herculean effort and might result in a fork as seen with the Blocksize Wars of years past.

Oblong Announces $7.5 Million Private Placement to Launch Bittensor-Centric AI and Digital Asset Strategy
DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oblong, Inc. (Nasdaq: OBLG) ('Oblong' or the 'Company'), a technology services provider specializing in innovative IT solutions, today announced it has entered into a securities purchase agreement to raise approximately $7.5 million through the sale of 1,989,392 shares of common stock (or common stock equivalents in lieu thereof) at $3.77 per share in a private placement priced at-the-market under Nasdaq rules. The offering, led by institutional investors focused on emerging technology, is expected to close on or about June 11, 2025, subject to customary closing conditions. Oblong is strategically allocating capital to enter the AI-driven digital asset space through the accumulation of $TAO, the native token of Bittensor—a decentralized intelligence protocol. The Company's transition will be supported by software development initiatives that actively enhance this emerging ecosystem. Oblong is embracing the next evolution of the internet: permissionless intelligence. 'Bittensor is an open network for intelligence, the same way the original internet was for information,' said Peter Holst, Chief Executive Officer of Oblong. 'By building on this open platform, problems can be solved collaboratively at global scale, with the world's brightest minds incentivized by $TAO. With over 25 years of experience scaling technology businesses, we believe we are uniquely positioned to capitalize on this next major inflection point in AI and digital infrastructure.' Technology-First Strategy in the $TAO Ecosystem Oblong will allocate the majority of proceeds toward acquiring $TAO tokens and contributing to Bittensor's decentralized AI network—an open marketplace for compute, inference, data, and model training. This architecture democratizes access to intelligence, much like an OpenAI for the world. In addition to the proceeds from the private placement, the Company had $4.3 million in cash and no debt as of March 31, 2025, and intends on making significant investments in building software tools that drive usage and solve infrastructure challenges within the network. Additionally, Oblong's strategy will include participating in subnet 0, achieving a yield on a portion of its $TAO holdings. The Company's approach is anchored in confidence around $TAO's tokenomics—no venture capital, no insider allocations, and no vesting cliffs that distort market value. This rare structure gives Oblong confidence to accumulate $TAO for the long term, unlike most altcoins, which fail to store value relative to Bitcoin. Strategic Rationale and Market Opportunity Oblong believes the fusion of artificial intelligence and digital assets marks the third great era of crypto, following Bitcoin and smart contract infrastructure (L1's like Ethereum and Solana). Just as those phases delivered generational upside, this AI x crypto era offers similar potential—and Bittensor is at the forefront. $TAO is the leading Layer 1 asset in the AI digital asset space, with a rapidly growing ecosystem of subnets, applications, and contributors. With a market capitalization of approximately $3 billion and strong fundamentals, the Company believes $TAO is positioned to be the defining asset of this new category. Why $TAO and Bittensor Bittensor's $TAO is a Layer 1 cryptocurrency—akin to Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Solana—but differentiated by its foundational role in creating a global intelligence market. By rewarding computational contributors in a permissionless environment, Bittensor enables collaborative, decentralized AI that challenges the dominance of centralized platforms. With a capped supply of 21 million tokens and quadrennial halving events, $TAO mirrors Bitcoin's scarcity-driven model. Its deflationary design, transparent issuance schedule, and absence of insider holdings provide a credible long-term value proposition. The Company's strategic focus on $TAO reflects its conviction that decentralized AI infrastructure will be the next frontier of software development, digital monetization, and investor opportunity. For more information about Oblong's strategy, please review our Summary Investment Thesis filed as an exhibit to the Company's Current Report on Form 8-K, which will be filed substantially concurrently with the issuance of this press release. Dawson James Securities, Inc. is acting as the exclusive placement agent for the offering. The gross proceeds from the offering are expected to be approximately $7.5 million, prior to deducting placement agent's fees and other offering expenses payable by the Company. The Company intends to use the net proceeds from the offering to launch its Bittensor-centric AI and digital asset strategy. Trump Media, Docusign, Oracle post-IPO: Trending Tickers
Trump Media & Technology Group (DJT, DJTWW) stock is now getting a lift in Friday's pre-market trading following the fallout and ensuing feud between President Trump and Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk. This chaos comes after the Truth Social parent filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to register its own new bitcoin ETF. Docusign (DOCU) shares continue to sink after lowering its full-year billings guidance and planning a $1 billion share repurchase program. Stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Group (CRCL) moves further to the upside following its IPO on Thursday. Catch Yahoo Finance's interview with Circle President Heath Tarbert. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Morning Brief here. Now time for some of today's trending tickers. We're watching DJT DocuSign and Circle. First up, DJT shares taking a hit after President Trump and Elon Musk publicly clashed on social media, escalating their recent feud. The stock, it had fallen, but now you're seeing in extended hours right now up by about 2%. On Thursday, it did fall more than 8% though. Wiped out more than $200 million from President Trump's net worth here. And even as we're watching the rebounds for both of these companies, both Tesla and DJT here, pre-market, of course, this comes amid the spat that played out popcorn style in front of all of our eyes yesterday, as investors might have been forced to pick a side as well through their own, um, through whatever inclination inside they fall on knowing that these two used to be in a very public romance together. Certainly. Uh, and that is exactly what Representative Alexandria Ocasio Cortez referred to when she said that the girls were fighting in reference to the feud. Having said that, uh, tough for DJT given that there was a positive catalyst for the stock earlier this week after the company appeared to get a step closer to, uh, launching its own Bitcoin ETF in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing there. You can see the stock was up for a touch of this week, but now, obviously, moving to the downside, down a little over 3% over the last five days. Next up, DocuSign is lowering its full year billings guidance still. The electronic signature software company topping revenue expectations for the first quarter. DocuSign also announcing a $1 billion increase to its share repurchase program. You can see the stock down over 18%. It mirrors a trend that we have seen throughout companies that signal any sign of weakness in their forward guidance. That is certainly going to be a killer for them, and we've seen that playing out throughout this entire earning cycle and beyond, again with DocuSign lowering that full year billings guidance. Yeah, that guidance, uh, DocuSign projecting revenue between 3.151 billion and $3.163 billion. It's actually a 6% growth rate. That is for the full fiscal year. They also anticipate billings growth to accelerate. That's going to be in the latter half of the year, which essentially is just a few weeks away at this point. And then additionally, the executives talking a little bit more, we've had um, Allen Tigerson on Yahoo Finance a few times, been kind enough to take some time with us, but reiterating the leadership reimagining agreement management through its platforms, and then emphasizing their strategic executions here. However, the slower growth in the real estate sector, that's seen as one of the areas that could potentially be a headwind to revenue. And then additionally, just billing cycles. We we talk about deal scrutiny. We've mentioned it in one of our earlier discussions today. That is something that DocuSign also has to weave itself through as well. Um, and could have a larger overhang potentially on some of the performance obligations. Uh, so all that considered, taking a look at DocuSign shares, they're down bad by about 18, 19% right now pre-market. Finally here, we're tracking Circle extending gains after its strong New York Stock Exchange debut. The stable coin issuer soaring 168% Thursday, raising more than $1 billion in its IPO. Trading was halted more than once due to volatility here. You're seeing shares pre-market add on another 18.3% right now. Yeah, it's interesting to see, uh, the degree of success around Circle, especially given that, uh, their USDC is the second largest stable coin in the world that comes after Tethers, which is US DDT. Interesting also taking a look at some research this morning from Arc Invest, estimating that the total value transacted through stable coins was higher than Visa's transactions in the year 2024. So certainly that is a signal of potential catalyst for this name which is still up pre-market here. Yeah, just some background on this to additional context that might be valuable for our viewers here. Just in the significance of this, largest ever pop for a billion dollar IPO. This is according to Renaissance Capital here. And this is the number two stable coin issuer in the world. Originally only planned to raise $600 million, offering 24 million shares at a range of $24 to $26, but see exactly what it's trading at here this morning, even pre-market. Uh, it seems like there's a lot more room to run potentially. Absolutely.

City watchdog to lift ban on some crypto-linked investments for consumers
The City watchdog is set to lift a ban on some cryptocurrency-linked investments for individual consumers despite warning people could 'lose all their money' from the 'high-risk' asset. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said it was proposing to allow retail investors to access crypto exchange-traded notes (ETNs). Like stocks and shares, crypto ETNs can be bought and sold and work by tracking the performance of cryptoassets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. It means people are exposed to its changing value without needing to hold the asset themselves. Currently, just professional investors are allowed to buy and sell the investment product after the FCA granted access last year. At the time, the regulator said it still believed crypto ETNs to be 'ill-suited for retail consumers due to the harm they pose'. On Friday, David Geale, the FCA's executive director of payments and digital assets, said the proposals reflect its 'commitment to supporting the growth and competitiveness of the UK's crypto industry'. 'We want to rebalance our approach to risk and lifting the ban would allow people to make the choice on whether such a high-risk investment is right for them given they could lose all their money.' Access to crypto derivatives would still be banned for retail investors – but the FCA said it would continue to consider its approach to high-risk investments. In April, Chancellor Rachel Reeves said she wanted the UK to be a 'world leader in digital assets' and announced plans to make crypto firms subject to regulation in the same way as traditional finance companies. 'While the UK will always be committed to high international standards, I am determined that our regulatory framework supports economic growth,' she said at the time. But the FCA's chairman Nikhil Rathi recently warned that the number of young people turning to crypto as their first taste of investment was 'not great', adding that it was 'very high risk and you could potentially lose all your money'. The price of Bitcoin hit a fresh all-time high last month, topping about 111,000 dollars (£82,000) as the crypto market rallies amid support from Donald Trump's administration in the US.
