Royals' All-Star reprise in Texas includes homer from Witt against his hometown team
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr.'s biggest memory from All-Star festivities in his hometown last summer was coming up about 6 inches short — his measurement — in the Home Run Derby.
Now the star shortstop of the Kansas City Royals has his first homer that counts at the home of the Texas Rangers.
Witt went deep in the fifth inning after sparking his offense with a double and a run scored in the first, and fellow 2024 All-Star Salvador Perez homered twice in a 6-1 victory over the Rangers on Tuesday night.
As for the other active Kansas City All-Star from last year in the trio's return to Globe Life Field, Seth Lugo struck out a season-high nine in his first victory since May 1. The right-hander allowed three hits and one run in six innings.
Pretty good hat trick in an All-Star reprise as the Royals ended a six-game losing streak that tied their season worst. They also stopped a five-game skid against the Rangers, their co-tenant at spring training in Arizona.
'Seems like a little more than a year ago we were here and had good games,' said Lugo (4-5), forgetting for a moment that it's been about 11 months since he pitched a scoreless inning in the American League's 5-3 victory. 'And now we've got the W, so that's what's most important.'
Left-hander Cole Ragans, whose career started with the Rangers, is the Royals' fourth All-Star from a year ago. He's on the injured list with a left rotator cuff strain.
Witt — the son of former major league pitcher Bobby Witt, who spent 11 of his 16 big league seasons with the Rangers — lost the derby to Teoscar Hernández last July when a homer that would have forced a tiebreaker bounced off the wall in left field at Globe Life.
The 25-year-old wasn't the starter at shortstop for the AL — that was Gunnar Henderson — but Witt played and struck out. His only other homer against the Rangers was in a 12-3 loss at home two years ago.
His first at Globe Life was his ninth this season.
'It was great to just check off another ballpark,' said Witt, the former Dallas-area high school star who was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2019 amateur draft. 'But yeah, it was cool.'

Perez made the biggest news of the night by breaking Hall of Famer George Brett's franchise record with his 18th career multihomer game.
The significance wasn't lost on a nine-time All-Star who won a World Series with the Royals 10 years ago. Brett was on the franchise's other championship team 30 years before that.
'When you pass a Hall of Famer, now you know you're going to be next to him,' the 35-year-old Perez said. 'So it's super exciting for me.'

Skiing standout Marcel Hirscher will have a chance to race in the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympics after recovering from injury and receiving clearance to compete in the next World Cup season under the new wild card rule. The record eight-time overall World Cup champion had his return last season from five years of retirement cut short when he was injured in December with a torn ACL in his left knee after a fall in training. 'Rehab was going on quite well and now we are back in athletic training. This is super fun, being back a professional athlete again,' Hirscher said on Instagram on Wednesday. 'FIS (the International Ski and Snowboard Federation) made a decision that I am allowed to take my 17 starts from last year's season into the upcoming season. So that means I'm ready for another season ski racing. And I think now you can call it a comeback,' Hirscher added. While the 36-year-old Hirscher competed for Austria in his earlier career, he came back representing the Netherlands. He has an Austrian father and a Dutch mother. That means that if he decides to compete in the Olympics next year, he won't have to qualify for one of the four starting spots that the powerful Austrian team has for each race. Whereas the Netherlands doesn't have any other skiers of Hirscher's caliber. The wild card rule allows former champions to return to the World Cup without the necessary qualifying points. Lindsey Vonn also returned under the wild card rule last season with a new titanium knee and plans on competing in the Feb. 6-22 Olympics. Hirscher only completed one of his three races last season, placing 23rd in the giant slalom at Sölden, Austria. After the injury and ensuing surgery, Hirscher completed 1,000 hours of rehab. 'In the end, two questions remained: What do I want from life? What does life want from me?' Hirscher said. 'Even in difficult moments, my answer never changed: I want to race again.' Hirscher plans to return to snow training in September. 'At the moment, I'm shifting from the rehabilitation phase into full athlete mode, with more extensive sessions and higher intensity,' Hirscher said. 'Training hard again is bringing me a lot of joy. It's shaping up to be a very athletic summer.' Hirscher's 67 World Cup wins put him second on the all-time men's list behind only Ingemar Stenmark's 86 victories. He also won two Olympic golds, in combined and giant slalom at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games; plus a silver in slalom at the 2014 Sochi Games. The World Cup seasons opens in Sölden in October. Real American Freestyle wrestling to debut at Cleveland's Wolstein Center with Olympic medalists
Real American Freestyle wrestling's inaugural event will be held at the 13,000-seat Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio on Aug. 30, commissioner Hulk Hogan said in a statement. 'Cleveland is an incredible city, and Real American Freestyle is channeling its rock and roll style into this first event,' he said. The first set of matches and the location for the new promotion's first event were announced Wednesday. The first two women's matches are American Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hildebrandt vs. Mexico's Zeltzin Hernandez Guerra and American Olympic silver medalist Kennedy Blades vs. Mexico's Alejandra Rivera Arriaga. Maccabi Tel Aviv faces opponent from Cyprus in Champions League qualifying draw
NYON, Switzerland (AP) — Israeli soccer club Maccabi Tel Aviv was paired with Pafos of Cyprus in the Champions League second qualifying round draw on Wednesday. Maccabi must travel from its home city — which has been under attack this week from Iranian missiles — to Cyprus for the first-leg game on July 22 or 23, and find a stadium outside Israel for the return game the following week. European soccer body UEFA has required Israel's national and club teams to play international competition games in neutral countries for security reasons since October 2023, when the Hamas attacks provoked wider conflict in the region. Maccabi could stay in Cyprus, or return to Hungarian capital Budapest where it hosted a game in the Champions League preliminary round one year ago. Ukrainian champion Dynamo Kyiv was drawn to play either Zalgiris of Lithuania or Hamrun Spartans of Malta, who start in the first qualifying round next month.
