Naxalism taking last breath: CM Sai pays tribute to cop killed in IED blast

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Tuesday said the end of Naxalism is certain, as he laid wreath at the mortal remains of Additional Superintendent of Police Akash Rao Girepunje killed in an IED blast in Sukma district.
The CM said Girepunje's sacrifice will not go in vain.
Girepunje was killed and two officers were injured after the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by Naxals exploded on Monday in Sukma.
Amid emotional chants of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' and 'Akash Rao Amar Rahe', wreaths were laid on Tuesday at the police officer's mortal remains at the headquarters of the 4th battalion of Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) in Mana area here.
Apart from CM Sai, Deputy CMs Vijay Sharma and Arun Sao, state assembly speaker Raman Singh, ministers, public representatives and senior administration and police officials were present at the wreath laying ceremony.
Girepunje's family members, including his parents, his wife and two minor children, were also present.
His 7-year-old son bowed at the mortal remains with folded hands, while a relative carried his 6-year-old daughter in his arms.
"We have lost a brave and committed officer. Naxalites have committed the cowardly act out of frustration. Naxalism is breathing its last and its end is certain," CM Sai told reporters after being homage to Girepunje.
The chief minister, deputy CMs, Raman Singh and other officials lent their shoulders to Girepunje's mortal remains while they were being put in a flower-decked mini-truck at the CAF premises.
Earlier, the body, kept in a coffin, was taken from the police officer's residence in Kushalpur area to the CAF premises in the mini-truck. A huge crowd of people gathered on the road and chanted patriotic slogans.
The mortal remains were later carried for last rites to Mahadev Ghat, with a large number of people joining the funeral procession.

Activist files police complaint against Siddaramaiah, seeks action under Sec. 132 of BNS

Belagavi-based activist Bheemappa Gundappa Gadad has filed a complaint against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah saying that he (Siddaramaiah) tried to assault a senior police officer in Belagavi on April 28. Mr. Gadad filed the complaint at the Camp Police Station on Thursday. He accused Mr. Siddaramaiah of intimidating, insulting and trying to assault Additional Superintendent of Police, Dharwad, Narayan Baramani, who was on duty during a Congress rally in Belagavi. The Chief Minister was upset that the police were unable to prevent a protest by some women activists from the BJP, as they raised black flags and also slogans against the Chief Minister and asked him to 'Go to Pakistan'. The Chief Minister raised his hand in anger and tried to strike Mr. Baramani. The officer took a step back while on stage. The complainant asked the local police to act against the Chief Minister under Section 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging duty). Mr. Gadad attached a compact disc of a video clip of the incident. He said that he will complain to the National Human Rights Commission against the Chief Minister.

Trump hails troop deployment as California readies legal battle

LOS ANGELES: US President Donald Trump said Thursday that Los Angeles was "safe and sound" for the past two nights, crediting his deployment of thousands of troops to quell anti-deportation protests, as California prepared for a legal showdown over his unprecedented move. With protests spreading across the United States, a night-time curfew has been in place in its second-largest city with authorities tackling vandalism and looting that scarred a few city blocks. "Our great National Guard, with a little help from the Marines, put the L.A. Police in a position to effectively do their job," Trump said on Truth Social, adding that without the military the city "would be a crime scene like we haven't seen in years." The mostly peaceful protests ignited last week over an escalation in efforts to apprehend migrants in the country illegally, but there were also pockets of violence, including the burning of self-driving taxis and hurling stones at police. Trump deployed several thousand National Guard troops and 700 active-duty marines over the objections of Democratic California governor Gavin Newsom, the first such action by a US president in decades. Trump charged that the governor "had totally lost control of the situation." "He should be saying THANK YOU for saving his ass, instead of trying to justify his mistakes and incompetence," Trump added. In Spokane, in the northwest state of Washington, another night curfew was declared after police arrested more than 30 protesters and fired pepper balls to disperse crowds, officials said. In Seattle, Washington state's biggest city, police arrested eight people after a dumpster was set on fire and projectiles were thrown. Three people were arrested in Tucson, Arizona, following clashes with police, the Arizona Republic reported. Protests also took place in Las Vegas, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Milwaukee, Chicago, Atlanta, and Boston, according to CNN.

Madeswaran (52), and R. Ramesh (54), all residents of Arachalur in Erode district. Sujatha, Collector Raja Gopal Sunkara ordered the detention of the three under the Goondas Act. Detention notices were served on them at Coimbatore Central Prison.
