Girl With HIV Raped, Forced To Abort At Maharashtra Children's Home
An HIV-infected girl has alleged that she was raped for two years at a children's shelter in Maharashtra's Latur and was forced to undergo an abortion.
In her police complaint, the 16-year-old said that she was raped by an employee four times between July 13, 2023 and July 23 this year at Sevalay, a shelter home for HIV-infected children.
She was taken to a hospital after she fell ill, where tests revealed that she was four months pregnant.
The accused then got a doctor who performed an abortion procedure without her consent, the news agency PTI reported, citing an official.
"She was also threatened not to disclose the ordeal to anyone," the official said.
The girl then wrote a letter to officials and dropped it into a complaint box. The institution's management, however, did not help her and tore up the letter, the official said.
Sevalay's founder, Ravi Bapatle, superintendent, Rachna Bapatle, and employees Amit Mahamuni and Pooja Waghmare are among those arrested.
Sevalay, whose tagline is a "happy home of children", houses 23 boys and seven girls, all of whom are HIV infected, according to its website.
All the workers in the institution work for free, the website said.

Currently, about 90% of the injections used in the standard immunisation schedule for children can be safely given using this method. Besides reducing fear, the needle-free system also brings added safety benefits. Since no sharp needles are used, healthcare workers are protected from accidental pricks, and there is minimal risk of spreading infections like HIV or Hepatitis B. According to Dr Gawande, this simple device could dramatically improve vaccination coverage and cooperation, especially in children, who often resist traditional injections. The method is currently being used for people aged 6 months and above. Trials are underway for even younger infants (6 weeks to 6 months), and positive results are expected soon. While slightly more expensive — costing Rs200 to Rs300 more than regular injections — the prices are expected to drop as the technology becomes more widespread. 3 killed as gunmen fire at protesters in Pakistans Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province
Peshawar, Jul 27 (PTI) Unknown gunmen fired at a gathering protesting against counter-terrorism operations in Pakistan's northwestern province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, leaving three dead and many injured, a top official said. A day earlier, a mortar strike claimed the life of a girl in the Zakha Khel area of the Khyber District, sparking the Sunday demonstration, during which locals placed the girl's body in front of the Momand Ghuz security checkpoint. Suhail Afridi, the special assistant to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, said three people died and eight were injured in the firing by terrorists on the demonstrators in the Tirah Valley. Following the incident, the grieving families and residents of the area staged a protest by blocking the Tank-South Waziristan Road, and demanded immediate identification and action against those responsible for the killings. Afridi said, 'Following the girl's death on Saturday, locals staged a protest in front of the Frontier Corps compound today. They had gathered near he gates when shots were fired." PTI-2022 exam: 167 booked for forged degrees from JS University
Edited 399 Jaipur: Police's special operations group (SOG) has unearthed a major fraud in the 2022 Physical Training Instructor (PTI) recruitment exam, with hundreds of candidates having used forged BPEd degrees from JS University, based in Shikohabad of Uttar Pradesh, to clear the exam. Acting on digital evidence retrieved from the university's server, which logs tamper-proof timestamps of printed mark sheets, the SOG on Saturday registered an FIR against 167 individuals, including 165 selected candidates, rest are JS University officials and unknown accused. The probe builds on arrests made in March this year when the university's Chancellor, Registrar, and a middleman were arrested in a forged degree racket case. As per the FIR filed by SOG, investigators focused on 203 selected candidates from JS University's academic sessions 2017–2019, 2018–2020, 2019–2021, and 2020–2022, and found that only one had a marksheet printed during the official academic session (2018–2020). As per the latest FIR, JS University is authorised to admit only 100 students annually for the BPEd course. At most, 400 valid graduates from four academic sessions should have been eligible. Yet, 2,082 applicants with JS University degrees appeared for the PTI exam. SOG found that 25 candidates originally claimed to have degrees from other universities but later submitted BPEd degrees from JS University. Another 26 had mismatched academic sessions between their forms and documents. Nine applicants listed DPEd credentials but submitted BPEd degrees during verification. Forty-three candidates from the 2020–22 batch submitted results dated after the Sept 25, 2022, eligibility cut-off. For the same academic session, candidates presented different result dates—an anomaly officials say is impossible if the records were authentic. All marksheets for the 2017–19 session were printed only in 2022, as the recruitment process began. SOG also uncovered that some candidates used backdated BPEd degrees from private universities in other states—Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, and Gujarat. Investigators suspect collusion between university staff and intermediaries to generate certificates on demand. The PTI recruitment timeline began with the exam announcement on June 16, 2022, applications from June 23 to July 22, the exam on Sept 25, results on Oct 21, and document verification from Dec 2 to 16.
