Nagpur: Timely intervention by the
district child protection unit
(DCPU) prevented two child marriages in Kamptee, involving girls aged just 15.The child protection team received credible information about the planned weddings on Tuesday.
Acting swiftly, officials conducted inquiries at the homes of the girls and confirmed that both were underage.
The marriages were to take place at a major wedding lawn in Kamptee.Upon verification of the girls' documents, it was confirmed that they were only 15 years old — far below the legal age of 18 for girls and 21 for boys, as per the
Prohibition of Child Marriage Act
, 2006. Despite resistance and confusion in the families of the brides and grooms, the team enforced the law and stopped the ceremonies from taking place.A sealed statement was prepared on-site, with signatures collected from all present.
The police were immediately informed and took custody of the minor girls, who were later admitted to a govt-run child shelter.Authorities emphasised that certain communities still follow the regressive tradition of marrying off girls at a young age, despite repeated warnings and public awareness campaigns.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and the commissionerate of women and child development, Pune, under commissioner Nayana Gunde, had earlier issued strong directives to stop child marriages.In compliance with these directives, collector Vipin Itankar and chief executive officer Vinayak Mahamuni held a district-wide meeting and issued circulars to all relevant departments to remain alert during the festive season, when child marriages are more likely to occur.The crackdown was carried out under the guidance of district women and child development officer Ranjit Kure, with active participation from district child protection officer Mustaq Pathan, district child protection coordinator Prasannjeet Gayakwad, CDPO Anjali Nimbalkar, police inspector Prashant Jumde (Old Kamptee), protection officer Sadhana Hatwar, chief sevika Jyoti Nimje, child representative Meenakshi Dhadade, as well as representatives from the Gramin Samasya Mukti Trust, and police officials including PSI Milind Meshram and Roshni Akhare.Authorities have reiterated their commitment to take strict legal action against anyone attempting to conduct child marriages, urging communities to act responsibly and report such cases immediately. They have urged citizens to report information about child marriages on the 1098 toll-free number.

Ludhiana: Mother, among nine booked for marrying off 11-yr-old girl
Tibba police have registered a case against an Amritsar woman for marrying off her 11-year-old daughter to a 35-year-old man in Ludhiana. The accused, Kamaljeet Kaur, along with eight others, have been booked under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. The incident came to light after the victim's father, Jagjeet Singh, an auto-rickshaw driver from Bhai Manjh Singh Nagar, Amritsar, discovered the marriage through a WhatsApp status. The photos of the wedding were uploaded by Kaur, who travelled to Ludhiana with her daughter a few days ago and to stay at her parental home. In his complaint Jagjeet Singh said that his wife had arranged for their minor daughter to marry Prince, who hails from Samrala Road in the city. The marriage took place in the presence of Prince's family and several accomplices. Shocked by the discovery, Jagjeet immediately filed a police complaint, which was forwarded to the Ludhiana police for further the investigation, the Tibba police lodged an FIR under Sections 9 and 10 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. The others named in the FIR include the groom Prince, his parents Anoop Singh and Raj Rani, and relatives Sukhwinder Singh, his wife Swaranjit Kaur, their son Ravinder Singh alias Ravi, daughters Kajal and Priya— all residents of Tajpur Chowk in Ludhiana. Assistant sub inspector Baljeet Singh, the investigating officer at Tibba police station, said that the complaint was received on May 26. 'We have registered an FIR against all those involved in the case. While arrests are yet to be made, further investigation is underway,' he said.

Ludhiana: Tibba police booked an Amritsar-based woman and eight of her associates from Ludhiana in connection with a case of child marriage. As per the reports, the woman got her 11-year-old minor daughter married to a relative in Ludhiana, violating the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. When her husband, Jagjeet Singh, came to know of the incident, he filed a complaint with the Amritsar police, who then forwarded the matter to their counterparts in Ludhiana for further action. Based on his complaint, the Ludhiana police registered an FIR under Sections 9 and 10 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. The accused include Jagjeet Singh's wife, Kamaljeet Kaur, and her associates — Sukhwinder Singh, his wife Swaranjit Kaur, their son Ravinder Singh alias Ravi, daughters Kajal and Priya, and Anoop Singh, his wife Raj Rani, and son Prince — all residents of Samrala Road, near Tajpur Chowk. 47 ‘minor' girls rescued from four shrimp processing units in Nellore district
As many as 47 girls, suspected to be minors, working in four shrimp processing units, were rescued by special teams during joint inspections across SPSR Nellore district. Cases have been filed against these firms and the labour contractors at the Kodavalur, Dagadarthi and Indukurupeta police stations. As per the orders issued by District Collector O. Anand, the special teams constituted of officials from District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Anti Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU), Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Factories and Police departments. Speaking to The Hindu, District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Suresh Kumar said, 'The teams conducted inspections at 12 shrimp processing units as per the action plan. We identified some girls, suspected to be minors, engaging in child labour, in four shrimp processing units.' 'With the support of Medical Officer, the DCPU has rescued these girls, who allegedly have been recorded as majors in their Aadhaar cards. They were shifted to Viswajanani, a child care institution registered under Juvenile Justice Act, at Rajupalem village in Kodavalur mandal,' he informed. Of the 47 girls, 10 have been confirmed as minors based on general, dental and radiological examination conducted by a team of doctors from ACSR Government General Hospital (GGH) in Nellore. Following the examinations, they were handed over to their parents from Odisha.
