TT Worlds: Sreeja Akula loses but India taste success in doubles

Hindustan Times17-05-2025

Doha, India number one Sreeja Akula crashed out in the first round but the Mukherjee sisters Ayhika and Sutirtha and the duo of Diya Chitale and Yashaswini Ghodpade won their respective women's doubles opening matches in the table tennis World Championships here on Saturday.
The Indian pair of Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah too tasted success in their first round men's doubles match in the premier tournament.
An error-prone Akula lost to Thailand's Suthasini Sawettabut 1-4 rather tamely.
It was a disappointing outing for the Indian as she made an early exit after losing to the world number 84. Sreeja won the opening game, but after that, lost her momentum, dropping innumerable points and making unforced errors to go down in just 33 minutes.
The Indian contingent though had moments to cheer as Asian Games medallists Ayhika and Sutirtha beat the Turkish pair of Ozge Yilmaz and Ece Harac 3-2 following a five-game thriller.
The result meant that the Indian pair ended a six-match losing streak while progressing to the next round of the ITTF World Championships.
The second Indian women's doubles pair of Diya and Yashaswini too progressed to the second round of the competition with a win against Uzbekistan pair of Magdieva and Erkebaeva 3-1 .
They started off on the wrong note and lost the opening game by a close margin but bounced back to win the next three games and confirm their place in second round.
The Indian duo of Thakkar and Shah then continued their good form this season with a straight-game win over the Slovenian duo of Deni Kozul and Peter Hribar. They won 3-0 .

Commentator's Virat Kohli Reference For Carlos Alcaraz In Old Video Goes Viral

Cricket might not be a global sport, but Virat Kohli is certainly a global athlete. The impact Virat has managed to create over the course of his esteemed career has drawn attention from not just cricket lovers but top athletes from other sports as well. As Spain's Carlos Alcaraz took on Italy's Jannik Sinner in the French Open 2025 men's singles final, an old video of the Spaniard went viral. In the video, the commentators couldn't help but compare the former's exploits with those of the Indian cricket icon. The video was from a match between Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas from 2023. Much like Virat did in cricket, Alcaraz has taken the tennis world by storm, thanks to his ability to excel in all conditions, against every opponent. The craft, skill, and grit that Alcaraz showed against Sinner in the Roland Garros summit clash on Sunday reminded the commentators of Virat. King Kohli is the face of World Cricket #Wimbledon — Shekhar (@Shekhar499) July 17, 2023 After losing the first two sets in the Roland Garros final, Alcaraz bounced back in style to beat Sinner 3-2 in a 5-set thriller that went down in history as the longest final ever in French Open history. In fact, Carlos Alcaraz saved three championship points as he produced an astonishing fightback. Reigning champion Alcaraz rallied from the brink of defeat to overcome world number one Sinner 4-6, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (10/2) to clinch his fifth Grand Slam title after five hours and 29 minutes. The 22-year-old Spaniard is now unbeaten in five Grand Slam finals after snapping Sinner's 20-match winning run at the majors. Alcaraz pulled off his first-ever comeback from two sets down to stun Sinner in the longest Roland Garros final in history. It easily eclipsed the 1982 final in Paris when Mats Wilander triumphed in four sets over Guillermo Vilas in 4 hours and 42 minutes. Alcaraz becomes the third youngest man to win five Grand Slams -- after Bjorn Borg and compatriot Rafael Nadal -- following an incredible duel between the two stars of a new generation. Sinner fell agonisingly short of a third successive Grand Slam crown after last year's US Open title and back-to-back Australian Open triumphs.

When Jasprit Bumrah gave Cameron Green confidence with special message before surgery

Cameron Green revealed that Jasprit Bumrah reached out to him before he went in to get back surgery last year. Green had to go under the knife ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last year as scans found that he was struggling with a unique issue. This meant that Green missed the BGT series against India at home, the Champions Trophy and the IPL 2025 season. advertisementGreen recently made his comeback to the field after a lengthy lay-off and will be part of the World Test Championship final for Australia against South Africa. Speaking to 7News, Green said that he had a chat with Ben Dwarshius and Jason Behrendorff before getting the surgery and felt he had made the right choice as soon as he made his mind up about surgery. 'I spoke to Ben Dwarshuis, and Jason Behrendorff, who I'm very close to in WA,' Green said. "And they couldn't speak any higher about getting it." 'Both of them said they wished they got it earlier. I think that's obviously really reassuring. As soon as I decided to get it, I knew it was the right thing to do," said Green. Green said that Bumrah reached out to him the night before surgery and while the Indian pacer was playing in a Test match and it was a special moment for him. advertisement'Even Jasprit Bumrah reached out the night before I was getting surgery. He was in the middle of a Test match in India. Just a few things like that is really special,' said Green. Bumrah and Green were part of the Mumbai Indians squad back in 2023, but the Indian pacer missed that season as he himself underwent surgery on the back. Green said Bumrah's message and performances after getting surgery filled him with confidence. 'To get someone like him to reach out and then to watch him during the summer, to see how good he is obviously post-surgery, filled me with a lot of confidence,' Green said.'At the two-week mark after surgery, I was in the gym moving around. It was incredible.'Green is expected to be back in the Australia playing XI for the WTC final against South Africa. Must Watch
