The Shocking Truth About Eating Ultra-Processed Foods And Your Lifespan, According To A New Study
A new study suggests that eating lots of ultra-processed foods can increase risk of death up to 10 percent.
The findings were based on more than 540,000 American adults who tracked their diets for nearly 30 years.
Here's what experts want you to know about UPFs and their impact on your health.
Whether you're grabbing a quick deli meat sandwich from the grocery store or sipping on a soda for an afternoon pick-me-up, there's a solid chance you'll encounter several ultra-processed foods (UPFs) as you go about your day. But while UPFs are certainly delicious and convenient, research consistently suggests that consuming a lot of these foods in your diet isn't great for your health.
In fact, a new study hammers that finding home. The findings suggest that having a diet that's heavy in UPFs could actually shorten your lifespan. These foods make up about 70 percent of our food supply, making it very tricky to avoid them entirely. But the study's findings definitely provide a little extra motivation if you're looking to cut back and find. Here's everything to know about the new data and what it could mean for you.

For the study, which was published in the journal Nature Medicine, researchers followed more than 540,000 American adults between the ages of 50 and 71, and tracked their diets for nearly 30 years. More than half of the people in the study, which started in the mid-1990s, have since died. The researchers looked at the death rates of people who ate the most UPFs and those who ate the least, and also drilled down on the types of UPFs they ate.
The researchers discovered that having a diet heavy in UPFs was linked to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and colorectal cancer, along with about a 10 percent higher risk of early death. Processed meat (think: deli meat and hot dogs) was linked to an 11 percent increase in type 2 diabetes risk and a 7 percent higher risk of developing colorectal cancer. Sugar-sweetened beverages like sodas led to an 8 percent higher risk of type 2 diabetes and a 2 percent higher risk of heart disease.
The researchers stressed that more research is needed, but say the findings only add to the growing recommendations that people cut back on their ultra-processed food intake.
The level of processing that food undergoes before it ends up on our table is classified by a system known as the NOVA scale. This breaks foods into four categories, explains Jessica Cording, RD, CDN, author of The Little Book of Game-Changers:
Unprocessed and minimally processed foods: Foods that fall into this group are in their natural state or barely altered, Cording says. That includes things like strawberries, avocados, and milk.
Processed culinary ingredients: Foods in this camp are minimally processed through steps like pressing, refining, grinding, or milling. Almond flour and olive oil are processed culinary ingredients, Cording explains.
Processed foods: Foods that are considered processed have been changed from their natural state and often contain salt, oil, and sugar. That includes some cheeses and canned fish, per Cording.
Ultra-processed foods: These foods are processed, but take it another step by also including ingredients like artificial colors and flavors, along with preservatives for shelf stability, and ingredients to preserve texture. Packaged foods usually fall into this group.
There are several things that could be at play here. For starters, UPFs are linked with a higher risk of developing serious health issues like heart disease and colorectal cancer, and having those conditions raises your risk of early death.
It's likely related to inflammation, says Keri Gans, RDN, author of The Small Change Diet. 'Diets rich in ultra-processed foods may cause inflammation in the body, which over time may increase the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and other serious health issues that can reduce your lifespan,' she says.
There are a few reasons why these foods aren't great for your heart. 'Ultra-processed foods are often high in added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium, which may increase blood pressure, LDL ('bad') cholesterol, and inflammation, all key risk factors for heart disease,' Gans says.
But eating a lot of UPFs also means that you're likely crowding out healthier choices, Cording points out. 'If someone is eating a lot of ultra-processed foods that don't offer much in the way of important vitamins and minerals, and over-consuming sugar, preservatives, and empty calories, it can set someone up for adverse health issues,' she says.
This food category is quite broad and includes things like bars and protein powders, along with stuff people typically think of, like hot dogs and sodas. While dietitians stress that whole foods are best, Cording says you don't need to freak if you grab the odd bar to tide you over until dinner. 'It's really the overall diet pattern that matters,' she says.
Still, if you'd prefer to cut out or cut down on UPFs in your life, Gans recommends filling your plate with whole foods first. 'Focus on eating more whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and lean proteins, which naturally leave less room for ultra-processed ones,' she says. Reading ingredients lists is also helpful, Gans adds. 'Look for lengthy lists that include added sugars, saturated fats, and excessive sodium,' she suggests.
The experts also know that it's difficult to be perfect here. 'You don't have to cut everything out, but being mindful helps,' she says.

Why racehorses might hold the key to saving human lives
After a routine gallop on the morning of October 31 2023, the American thoroughbred racehorse Practical Move collapsed and died. A necropsy – the animal equivalent of a human autopsy — suggested sudden cardiac death. More than a decade earlier, on March 17, 2012, Bolton footballer Fabrice Muamba collapsed during a televised FA Cup match, 41 minutes into play. His heart had stopped due to sudden cardiac arrest. For 78 minutes, Muamba was clinically dead. He was revived after 15 defibrillatory shocks and later fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator – a device that monitors heart rhythms and delivers shocks when dangerous arrhythmias occur. Muamba's story captured global attention, as did Christian Eriksen's collapse during Euro 2020. But for every elite athlete whose sudden cardiac event makes headlines, there are countless others – both human and animal – who collapse without cameras, coverage, or answers. Horses suffer many of the same heart conditions as humans, including arrhythmias and sudden cardiac arrest. Like elite athletes, they push their cardiovascular systems to the limit. Their extraordinary physiology makes them a unique, underused model for studying how the heart performs – and sometimes fails – under extreme physical strain. If we're serious about improving health outcomes across species, we need to rethink the artificial divide between animal and human medicine. That's where the One Health, One Medicine agenda comes in. This approach recognises that human, animal and environmental health are deeply interconnected. It calls for collaboration between doctors, veterinarians, scientists, policymakers and environmental experts to tackle shared challenges — from zoonotic pandemics and antimicrobial resistance to chronic disease. While it's often associated with infectious threats such as avian flu or COVID-19, One Health is equally vital in addressing non-communicable diseases (ones that can't be passed from person to person), which are now the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. At its core, One Health starts with a simple idea: humans and animals share the same biological systems. Studying one helps us better understand the other. And, when it comes to cardiovascular health, racehorses offer a powerful example of why that matters. From stable to surgery As a cardiac electrophysiologist – a specialist in the heart's electrical activity in both humans and animals – I see cases every year of horses collapsing during or after races, potentially due to undiagnosed cardiac issues. Exercise-associated sudden death is notoriously hard to predict and devastating when it strikes – not only for the horses and their handlers, but for the racing world more broadly. Alongside my research team, I'm working to identify subtle electrical abnormalities in the equine heart that could act as early warning signs. Our goal is to understand what causes these sudden cardiac events — and ultimately, to predict which horses are most at risk. And this research could save lives. Not just equine ones. What we learn from equine hearts could help transform human cardiac medicine — particularly in athletes or others under intense cardiovascular stress. If we can recognise, manage and prevent rhythm disturbances in high-performing horses, we may find new ways to prevent sudden cardiac arrest in people. Unlike many lab animals, horses share heart anatomy and disease patterns that closely mirror our own. Their ability to shift from resting heart rates as low as 20 beats per minute to over 200 during exertion offers a natural model of extreme cardiac adaptability. And the benefits of equine research go far beyond the heart. Studies of horse physiology are also yielding insights into gut health, immune response and metabolism. As prey animals – species that have evolved to survive being hunted – horses are finely attuned to their environment. Their survival has long depended on their ability to detect and react quickly to potential threats, which has resulted in a highly sensitive nervous system. This heightened reactivity extends to their gastrointestinal tract, making them especially vulnerable to stress-related gut issues. Environmental changes, emotional distress and social disruption can all trigger digestive problems in horses, including colic and gastric ulcers. Because of this sensitivity, horses have emerged as a surprisingly valuable model for studying the gut-brain axis – the complex communication network between the digestive system and the brain. They also offer insight into how chronic stress and inflammation can affect long-term health, with potential applications not only in veterinary care but also in understanding human conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression. When we invest in equine health, we're not just helping animals. We're expanding what's possible in human medicine, too. Breaking down the silos Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, even some cancers — these aren't just human problems. They're shaped by shared genetic, environmental and behavioural forces that cut across species. By dismantling the silos between human and animal health, One Health allows us to share knowledge, pool data, and develop cross-species innovations that benefit us all. Too often, animal health is treated as separate — or even secondary — to human health. That's a mistake. Our wellbeing is tightly bound to the health of the animals we care for and the environments we share. A renewed focus on equine wellbeing doesn't just improve outcomes for horses. It sharpens our understanding of physiology, strengthens public health, and helps prevent avoidable deaths — on and off the track. If we want to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death in athletes — or anyone pushing their body to its limits — we need to widen the lens. That means recognising the value of research in veterinary medicine. It means turning the stethoscope toward the stable. Because when a horse collapses on the track, it's more than a tragedy. Birth Control Users Report Wildly Different Hair Changes. Doctors Explain Why.

Doctors put me on the pill at 16 to help manage the agonizingly heavy periods that had plagued me since I was 11 years old. For me, getting a prescription wasn't as easy as walking into my doctor's office and simply asking for one—it was an incredibly lengthy process. Because my mom suffered a stroke at 31—six months after starting birth control—I underwent a variety of blood tests to analyze the likelihood of the same thing happening to me. From there, I was put on the lowest possible hormone dose to regulate my periods. So began my birth control journey. More than a decade later, I decided I needed a form of birth control that wouldn't require me to carry a pill pack or take a little capsule at the same time every day. My schedule was busy, and ever-changing, and I wanted to avoid the hassle. That meant that the best solution for me was the Kyleena IUD, and aside from downplaying the excruciating painful insertion (I passed out from the pain twice), my provider clearly explained the potential side effects that could result: irregular bleeding for the first few months, occasional breakouts from the hormonal shifts, weight gain, loss of libido. Sadly, the normal things women have to deal with to take control of their sexual health. For the most part, I've had minimal complaints about my IUD. But there is one undisclosed side effect that I'm still coming to terms with: How it has affected my hair. An unexpected twist About two months after the insertion, my body hair—particularly in my pubic and underarm areas—began to grow thicker, darker, and much faster than before. To make things even weirder, these were areas where I'd gotten laser hair removal, so the stark change going hairless to, well, not, was staggering. My body hair wasn't the only thing to take a hit. Although it took a bit longer for me to notice, the hair on my head completely changed too. For 26 years my curl pattern was slightly wavy, but I watched with curiosity as type 3 ringlet curls formed along my hairline any time I stepped into a humid environment or let my hair air dry. It took me nearly two years to put the pieces together and make the correlation between my new birth control and these hair changes, and after hours of research and conversations with OBGYNs, endocrinologists, dermatologists, and trichologists, it turns out hormonal birth control can change how your hair grows—but it's rarely mentioned as a side effect. The unexplored truth This lack of understanding is partly due to the fact that hair growth changes are assessed by dermatologists, not OB/GYNs. 'Most gynecologists are not fully aware of the hormonal effects on hair,' shares Angela Wilson, MD, board-certified OB/GYN at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care in New York. (This also explains why many of my OB/GYN experts skirted around my questions on hair growth and spoke about hair loss instead). Another reason is that hair changes due to hormonal birth control aren't all that common. Just 5 percent of women with hormonal IUDs report hair loss, and there aren't studies that can say for sure the percentage of women who experience extra growth, explains Sheeva Talebian, MD, a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist at CCRM Fertility Of New York. These facts aside, there is some data to reference. 'It's well established that hormones affect both your hair growth cycle and your hair follicle structure, which determines if you have curly or straight hair,' says Jessie Cheung, MD, a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in hormones and proper sexual health practices. 'Major hormone changes such as puberty and menopause can result in different hair patterns, textures, and density, and yes, birth control can too.' While there isn't one specific type of hormone that causes these changes, Dr. Wilson explains that progesterone and estrogen, two of the most common hormones found in both oral pills and IUDs, can affect hair growth and hair loss, though she notes that the effects are still poorly understood due to minimal research on women. What we do know is that 'when hormones bind to the hair follicle, it can change the duration of a particular phase of the hair cycle, as well as potentially alter the structure of the hair follicle itself,' she says. When the shape of the follicle is changed, the texture changes as well. Deeper dive And what about my increased thickness? I could thank progestins for that. These synthetic forms of progesterone which are commonly found in birth control can cause major androgenic effects, leading to an increase in male characteristics, like thicker, darker hair, says Gretchen Friese, certified trichologist for BosleyMD. 'They convert small, straight vellus hairs—the short, fine, and light 'peach fuzz' that covers most of the body—into larger, darker terminal hairs in sex-specific ares of the body,' she explains I personally experienced this in the pubic area and armpits, though experts say that it can also occur along the upper lip and chin, as well as on the chest and back. What's peculiar about my case, though, is that this occurred in areas where I'd already had laser hair removal, an uncommon phenomenon, says Friese. 'Though rare, we do know that hormones can trigger hair growth in follicles that weren't producing terminal hairs during laser treatments and turn vellus hairs into terminal hairs.' Can the effects be reversed? If you stop using your chosen form of birth control, yes, according to Anate Brauer, MD, a reproductive endocrinologist at RMA New York. You might also consider a discussion with your healthcare provider about 'choosing a birth control method with low androgenic activity or one with anti-androgenic properties to help minimize these changes," she says. Hormonal contraception is not one-size-fits-all. By working closely with your doctor, you should be able to find a contraceptive that you feel confident in and won't produce any undesirable side effects. And ultimately "the responsibility to mitigate those effects is on the physician, who must listen, acknowledge, and do their best to mitigate any side effects [from birth control],' says Jillian LoPiano, a board-certified OB/GYN and chief health officer at Wisp. So, don't suffer in silence—speak to your doctor at the first sign of any adverse effects. Embracing a new normal Compared to debilitating pain or bleeding, my hair issues may seem insignificant, but they took a big hit on my mental health. That being said, I've since come to terms with and even have learned to embrace my new hair. Don't get it twisted, though, I quickly booked a few extra laser hair removal sessions to get rid of the darker body hair once and for all. And if you're wondering how I was so caught off guard, consider that while we've recently seen strides towards better reproductive health protocols when it comes to the insertion of IUDs (thanks CDC!), there's still so much to be done. 'Research on female health conditions, is underfunded with insufficient data and too few female leaders,' says Somi Javaid, a board-certified OB/GYN and Founder of HerMD. "More education is necessary." On that front, I've been trying: Learning how to style and manage my curls has had its ups and downs, and after two years, I've finally hit my stride. Overall, this change has been a small price to pay in order to have control over my sexual health. Moving forward, my hope is that women won't continue to be blindsided by this potential change, and will be prepared to make well-informed decisions about their reproductive options—with this side effect clearly laid out from the jump.
