2025 Booker Prize longlist revealed as 'wonderful' books left judges 'elated'

Daily Mirror31-07-2025
The wait is over as the Booker Prize longlist has finally been announced. Selected by the 2025 judging panel chaired by Roddy Doyle — a critically acclaimed writer and 1993 Booker Prize winner — the list is peppered with some returning favourites, a few impressive debutants, and a third-time lucky hopeful.
Chosen out of 153 submissions, this year's longlist showcases outstanding works of long-form fiction written in English by authors of any nationality, published in the UK and/or Ireland between 1 October 2024 and 30 September 2025. Novelists of nine nationalities across four continents make up this year's longlist, with authors from the UK — namely Natasha Brown, Jonathan Buckley, Andrew Miller, Benjamin Wood, and Hungarian-British writer David Szalay — securing the highest number of nominations for their books.
Indian author Kiran Desai has once again been nominated for the top honour, 19 years after her previous novel, The Inheritance of Loss, won the Man Booker Prize in 2006. Kiran's newest novel, The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny, has been longlisted this year. If Kiran wins this year as well, she will be only the fifth double winner in the coveted prize's history. Back in 2006, the Indian author became the then-younger Booker Prize winner. Kiran's mother, renowned author Anita Desai, has also been shortlisted for the prize three times in the past.

Another returning longlisted author is Tash Aw. If Tash bags this year's prize for his novel, The South, he will become the first Malaysian winner of the title. Born in Taiwan, Tash has authored five novels, three of which have been longlisted for the Booker Prize. Previously, his books, The Harmony Silk Factory and Five Star Billionaire were nominated for the prize in 2005 and 2013, respectively.
Two past shortlistees — David Szalay, previously shortlisted in 2016 for his book All That Man Is, and Andrew Miller, shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2001 for his novel Oxygen — have also returned as nominees this year. Maria Reva's debut novel Endling and Ledia Xhoga's debut novel Misinterpretation have also made the longlist.
The six-book shortlist will be revealed at a public event at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall in London on Tuesday, September 23. The winner of the 2025 Man Booker Prize will be announced at a ceremony on Monday, November 10, at Old Billingsgate in London. The winner of the prestigious prize will be awarded £50,000.

Dick and Angel Strawbridge fans 'can't stop crying' after emotional post

Escape to the Chateau stars Dick and Angel Strawbridge took to social media to say 'thank you' for the 'magical memories' as fans reacted to the news Dick and Angel Strawbridge have entertained us on screen for over a decade and now the couple, along with their children, are sharing more magical memories. The much-loved duo took to Instagram today (10 August) to share a series of pictures from their amazing holiday in Australia. ‌ In the snaps, the family can be seen posing together in sweet pictures as well as enjoying the wildlife that Australia has to offer, with kangaroos and snakes joining them in the photos. ‌ Posting on The Strawbridge Family account, they captioned it: 'Thank you Australia for the magical memories. More to come on our adventures.. but we had to share some of our favourite pictures. ‌ 'We have hugged, laughed and swapped stories with so many.. it's really been truly amazing. Thank you for the love. Until the next time!' It comes after BBC Death in Paradise's Kris Marshall shares heartbreak over being sacked and losing job. Fans flocked to the comments section, with many being in complete shock at how much their children, Arthur and Dorothy, have grown since viewers last saw them on Escape to the Chateau. ‌ One fan expressed: 'One, I just want to cry. Looking at Dorothy and Arthur and how they have grown. I've watched your beautiful family from the beginning of the Chateau show (which I miss). They are beautiful. Dorothy is gorgeous and Arthur is exceedingly handsome.' Another social media user commented: 'I cannot believe how much Dorothy and Arthur have grown. I remember how little they were. I watched your TV program from the very beginning.' Somebody else agreed: 'Surreal to see how grown up the kids are considering we're still seeing reruns of the Chateau when Arthur was 9! So glad you've enjoyed our beautiful country.' ‌ While a fourth added: 'Cannot believe how much the kids have grown! Hope you all had a wonderful time.' Escape to the Chateau followed the family as they bought and renovated the 19 th century Château de la Motte-Husson, in Martigné-sur-Mayenne, France. ‌ The show began airing on Channel 4 in 2016 aired a whopping 50 episodes across nine seasons before it ended in December 2022. Revealing why they decided to end the show, the couple told HELLO! In 2023: 'It was two years ago that we decided to end the Escape to the Chateau series. 'We made the decision because the kids are growing older, and all the parallel activity was not sustainable at this level. We are doers and we are never going to stop completely, but we're also protecting them. 'Arthur is starting senior school and the pressure on our little ones is phenomenal. When he goes there, people may have heard that his parents have done stuff on television. Angel added: 'Up until this year, we were not on French television at our request because while we are the British family that bought the Chateau in the village, we are very much completely normal.'

UKIP leader Nick Tenconi accused of 'Nazi salute' in video he shared online

UKIP leader Nick Tenconi was criticised for using a gesture with his right arm which some social media users compared to a 'Nazi salute' The leader of UKIP has faced online accusations he used a Nazi salute in a clip he posted. In a video he shared on social media, Nick Tenconi was seen outside the Royal Beach Hotel in Southsea, Portsmouth, performing a gesture with his right arm. Tenconi, a 43-year-old personal trainer, curled his right hand into a fist and put it to his chest before raising his right arm in the air. The clip also showed Me Tenconi dancing to a 'L'Amour Toujours', a hit by Italian DJ Gigi D'Agostino released in 1999 that more recently has been used by members of the German far right. 'Turns my stomach that @NickTenconi feels able to throw a Nazi salute on an English street without consequences,' one person wrote. 'UKIP leader Nick Tenconi at an anti migrant protest,' another observed, asking 'is that a Nazi salute?'. The Mirror has approached Mr Tenconi for comment. Mr Tenconi, who was made leader of UKIP in February 2025, is also the COO of Turning Point UK, a right-wing non-profit organisation that says its goal is to 'unite people under the banner of personal responsibility, limited government and free market economics'. Asked about Mr Tenconi's gesture, Turning Point UK stressed to the Mirror that it is 'separate from party politics' and that its COO 'did not do a Nazi salute he did a close fisted salute'. The group directed the Mirror to a previous clip of Mr Tenconi raising his right arm with a clenched fist and said it was 'similar' to a gesture made by some supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement. Anti-racism demonstrators have long used a raised fist held straight up in the air as a mark of protest. Turning Point UK added: "This is nothing more than a ridiculous smear stemming from political opponents who are trying to derail Nick, because they are jealous of his popularity." Under the interim leadership of Mr Tenconi, UKIP received 0.02 percent of the vote at the 2024 general election. The clip posted by Mr Tenconi was captioned "we are sending them home" and comes amid a number of demonstrations against asylum seeker hotels and houses of multiple occupation. On Friday, there were protests in Bristol, Bournemouth, Liverpool and Birmingham among others on Saturday, and Portsmouth, Southampton and Aldershot in Hampshire, Leicester and Altrincham in Cheshire. A handful of people were arrested at demonstrations in Canary Wharf, in London, and Epping, in Essex, on Friday night. Hundreds of protesters in Nuneaton also marched through the Warwickshire town after two men, reported to be Afghan asylum seekers, were charged over the rape of a 12-year-old girl. The crowd, also protesting against asylum hotels and houses of multiple occupation, significantly outnumbered Stand Up to Racism counter-protesters outside Nuneaton's Town Hall on Saturday afternoon. Police said the protest was peaceful, with one arrest of a 17-year-old boy. The protests come after Warwickshire Police said Ahmad Mulakhil, 23, had been charged with rape, while Mohammad Kabir, 23, was charged with kidnap, strangulation and aiding and abetting rape of a girl under 13 after an alleged incident in Nuneaton. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage and the youngest council leader in the country, George Finch, who is leader of Warwickshire County Council, claimed there had been a 'cover-up' of details about the alleged rape. ‌ Warwickshire Police chief constable Alex Franklin-Smith said the force 'did not and will not' cover up alleged criminality and had followed national guidance. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has called for more transparency from police about suspects, and said it was an 'operational decision' for forces and the Crown Prosecution Service over what details to release. Ms Cooper said 'we do think more transparency is needed' in the information given by police. Mr Farage has suggested he believes the immigration status of suspects charged with crimes should be made available.
