Attack that shocked Kashmir
Aftermath and growing outrage
The sister of a terrorist involved in the April 22 Pahalgam attack has identified her brother as a " Mujahideen " and accused authorities of punishing innocent family members after their home in Tral was demolished due to an explosion during a search operation.Speaking to reporters near the ruins of the demolished house, she said, 'My one brother is in jail, the other brother is a Mujahideen, and I also have two sisters. Yesterday, when I came here from my in-laws' place, I did not find my parents and siblings at home. Police had taken them away. While I was here, the Security Forces came and asked me to move to a neighbour's house. I saw a man wearing a camouflage uniform placing an object like a bomb on top of the house. After that, the house was demolished… We are innocent. They have destroyed our house.'The woman is the sister of Adil Hussain Thokar , also known as Adil Guree, a local terrorist from Anantnag district who has been named by authorities as one of the key conspirators in the Pahalgam attack. Officials say Thokar is affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba and helped plan the massacre alongside Pakistani operatives. The family's home in Tral was one of two buildings reduced to rubble on Thursday night. The second belonged to another local man suspected of terror links. According to officials, the explosions took place during a search operation for alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives Adil Hussain Thokar and Asif Sheikh. Authorities claim the homes contained explosives that went off while being examined by security personnel. The Anantnag Police has announced a reward of ₹20 lakh for credible information leading to the arrest of Adil Hussain Thokar, along with two other Lashkar terrorists identified as Ali Bhai and Hashim Musa. All three are accused of playing central roles in orchestrating the deadly assault in Baisaran, a tourist meadow about seven kilometres from Pahalgam.Investigators say Thokar legally visited Pakistan in 2018 via the Attari-Wagah border, where he received terrorist training. He allegedly returned to Jammu and Kashmir covertly last year and has since been aiding cross-border operatives with logistics and planning. The Pahalgam attack is being described as the deadliest in the region since the scrapping of Article 370 in 2019. The six attackers, dressed in Army fatigues, reportedly targeted tourists based on their religion. Witnesses say the gunmen asked victims to identify themselves and recite Islamic verses before opening fire. The assault, which occurred around 1:30 PM in a heavily patrolled area, killed 26 people—many of them tourists—and left several injured. Survivors described the scene as chaotic and terrifying, with gunfire echoing through the usually peaceful meadow ringed by pine forests and snow-capped peaks. While authorities defend the demolitions as part of counter-terror operations, families of the suspects claim they are being punished without trial. 'We are innocent,' the sister said again, standing amid the rubble of her home. 'They didn't even let me speak to my parents. They just came and destroyed everything.'Security has since been tightened across the region as the manhunt continues for the fugitives. The government has reiterated its commitment to dismantling local support networks for foreign terrorists, even as the emotional fallout from the attack and its aftermath spreads through the Valley.

Two Lashkar-e-Taiba Terrorist Associates Apprehended In Bandipora
Two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist associates were apprehended today in the Malpora Nowgam area of Sumbal district, Bandipora. The arrests were made during a joint checking operation conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Indian Army. The arrested individuals have been identified as Ab Majid Gojri, a resident of SK Bala, and Ab Hamid Dar, a resident of Vijpara Hajin. Two Chinese grenades, two UBGL (Under Barrel Grenade Launcher) grenades, and 10 rounds of AKs (AK-series rifles) were recovered from their possession. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in this regard, and further investigation is underway. Also Read: Op Akhal Called Off After 12 Days; No Terrorist Trace Found Police consider these arrests a success for security forces in disrupting the activities of LeT in the region. The police are also investigating their level of involvement with the terrorist organisation and if these arrests are linked to earlier busted Lashkar-e-Taiba modules in Bandipora. This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by security forces to counter terrorism and maintain peace and order in the region. Operation Akhal The longest counter-terrorism operation, Operation Akhal, in the Akhal forest area of Kulgam district, was called off earlier after 12 days. The operation was launched on August 1 after receiving intelligence inputs about the presence of a terrorist group in the area. The operation was launched based on credible intelligence inputs indicating the presence of 5-6 heavily armed terrorists in the dense Akhal Khulsan forest. The forest is rugged terrain with dense trees, caves, and steep slopes. It was part of a massive crackdown on terrorist networks following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025. The operation ended without recovering any more terrorist bodies, raising questions about the effectiveness of the troops.

Iraq begins dig at site of suspected IS mass grave near Mosul
Excavation at the site has proved especially difficult due to the presence of sulphur-laced underground water, which has made the soil soft and unstable Armoured vehicles belonging to Iraqi security forces are stationed outside the US Embassy in Baghdad's Green Zone, Iraq, June 12, 2025. File Image/Reuters Iraqi authorities have commenced excavation work at a suspected mass grave near the northern city of Mosul, believed to be one of the country's largest burial sites linked to atrocities committed by the Islamic State group, officials said Sunday (August 17). The site, known as Khasfa, is a yawning sinkhole situated just outside Mosul, where IS once declared the capital of its self-styled caliphate. The dig, which began on 10 August, marks the first phase of surface-level excavation, according to project head Ahmed al-Assadi. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD An AFP correspondent at the scene described the discovery of human skulls poking through the sand: grim remnants of a chapter marked by terror and bloodshed. 'There are no exact figures,' Assadi said, referring to the number of victims. But a 2018 United Nations report identified Khasfa as likely Iraq's largest mass grave from the IS era. Official estimates suggest that at least 4,000 bodies were dumped there — with the possibility of thousands more still buried beneath. Assadi noted that those interred include soldiers executed by IS, local civilians, and members of the Yazidi religious minority — many of whom were systematically targeted by the jihadists. Excavation at the site has proved especially difficult due to the presence of sulphur-laced underground water, which has made the soil soft and unstable. This not only complicates digging but may also have eroded remains, making DNA identification harder, Assadi explained. The chasm itself stretches approximately 150 metres deep and 110 metres across — a vast, ominous wound in the earth. Further studies are required before deeper exhumation can proceed, Assadi said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In 2016 alone, IS fighters are believed to have executed as many as 280 people at Khasfa in a single day, many of them employees of Iraq's interior ministry, in what officials described as 'one of the worst massacres' carried out by the group. Between 2014 and 2017, IS militants swept across large parts of Iraq and Syria, imposing their harsh interpretation of Islamic law and carrying out widespread killings, abductions and sexual violence. The UN estimates that IS left behind more than 200 mass graves across Iraq, potentially containing up to 12,000 bodies. Even as the country grapples with the legacy of IS brutality, Iraqi authorities continue to uncover mass graves from earlier periods including from the regime of Saddam Hussein, toppled in a 2003 US-led invasion.
