Researchers uncover the odd reason an 'unusual' mummy survived the centuries

Researchers have uncovered the reason an "unusual" 18th-century mummy was preserved so well in Austria – and it's highly abnormal.
A study about the mummy was recently published in the journal Frontiers in Medicine. The so-called "air-dried chaplain" is housed in the crypt of the church of St. Thomas am Blasenstein in Upper Austria.
Historians believe the mummy's identity was most likely Franz Xaver Sidler von Rosenegg, a vicar who had been temporarily delegated to the St. Thomas parish at the time of his death.
He was between 35 and 45 years old when he died and passed away between 1730 and 1780, according to carbon dating. Experts were able to glean details about his life, including his diet, from the study.
"He had a high-quality diet based on terrestrial animal products [and] showed no signs of major physical work load," the study noted.
Despite his relatively healthy lifestyle, researchers believe that he died from an acute pulmonary hemorrhage after suffering from tuberculosis.
"[He] was most likely a pipe smoker and suffered from chronic active pulmonary tuberculosis with peripheral and central (hilar) calcifications (primary tuberculous complex) and a right lower lobe cavity with focal heterotopic ossification and potential active inflammation," the study detailed.
But experts were stunned when they came across the mummy's midsection and found it full of curious material – including wood chips, twigs and fabric.
"Most surprisingly, we detected, in the otherwise completely intact abdominal (and pelvic) cavity, extensive packing with foreign material, which was identified as a mixture of wood chips, fragmented twigs, large amounts of fabric of various types, including elaborate embroidered linen, and even pieces of silk," the article said.
Researchers also came across a solution made of zinc, chloride and copper that appeared to aid in the cadaver's preservation.
The solution had been inserted into the mummy's abdominal cavity.
"This embalming method seems to have included high-level zinc-ion solution impregnation (most likely zinc-chloride with small amounts of arsenic) and the addition of copper," the study said.
"This is the first verified case of such a treatment."
Researchers added, "It led to an excellent state of conservation of the [body], while the face (and skull) and peripheral extremities were less well-preserved."
Professor Andreas Nerlich discussed the findings in an email with Fox News Digital, noting the embalming technique was previously unknown.
"The most significant factors for the embalming of this mummy were the internal stuffing [of] fabric and wood chips and the zinc-chloride solution," the expert said.
Though the mummy was found to have had a healthy diet, Nerlich said that factor "obviously had no influence."
The professor added, "We have no idea whether this [embalming] technique has been applied more often, but this is the first verified case of such a treatment. We have no data on its use in other cases."
The mummy is one of several well-preserved remains that have been studied and publicly reported in recent months.
Last year, archaeologists unsealed a 2,000-year-old tomb in Italy and found a mummy to be in "excellent state."
In March, a female 130,000-year-old baby mammoth was dissected in Russia.

In women with angina pectoris but no obstructive coronary artery disease (ANOCA), a high concentration of pro-C-type natriuretic peptide (proCNP) is linked to a 73% increased risk for all-cause mortality. The substance also shows a positive association with atherosclerotic markers and a negative association with generalized inflammation. METHODOLOGY: The analysis focused on baseline associations between proCNP concentrations in plasma and clinical data in 1508 women with ANOCA, with exploratory analyses examining correlation patterns between proCNP and 185 cardiovascular plasma markers. Primary outcomes included all-cause death and a composite endpoint of cardiovascular events. Hazard ratios (HRs) were adjusted for age and creatine concentration, which have been linked to proCNP-derived peptides in plasma. TAKEAWAY: A high concentration of proCNP (≥ 53.4 pmol/L) was associated with a diagnosis of hypertension ( P = .001) and diabetes mellitus ( P < .001), postmenopausal status ( P < .001), but not age. = .001) and diabetes mellitus ( < .001), postmenopausal status ( < .001), but not age. The researchers identified 38 plasma markers significantly associated with proCNP, showing positive correlation with atherosclerotic markers and a negative correlation with pro-inflammatory markers. Taken together, the baseline associations of the present study show high proCNP concentration in women with ANOCA is associated with a cardiovascular risk profile independent of NT-proBNP and low-grade inflammation.' Head CT May Be Essential in Older Adults With Delirium

A study found that 1 in 6 older adults with delirium in the emergency department (ED) had abnormal findings on head CT, even without traditional risk factors for intracranial pathology. METHODOLOGY: Researchers conducted a secondary analysis of two prospective observational studies (one conducted from 2009 to 2012 and the other from 2012 to 2014) involving a total of 160 patients with delirium, aged 65 years or older (median age, 76 years; 62.5% women; 20% non-White), at an urban, tertiary care academic hospital. The primary outcome measure was a "positive composite head CT," defined as any acute intracranial abnormality seen during the index hospitalization or a new neurologic diagnosis within 30 days of the patient's ED visit. Researchers evaluated the diagnostic performance of five commonly cited risk factors — including anticoagulant use, recent head trauma, focal neurologic deficits, headache, and altered level of consciousness — to determine their ability to identify patients needing head CT. A secondary analysis was conducted to assess the diagnostic performance of six less common risk factors: Current antiplatelet use, current aspirin use, new or worsening seizures, history of brain hardware, recent falls, recent non-fall trauma, and vomiting secondary to trauma. TAKEAWAY: About 15.6% of older patients with delirium had a positive composite head CT. The absence of any common risk factors did not reduce the likelihood of a positive composite head CT (negative likelihood ratio [NLR], 0.6; 95% CI, 0.2-2.4), except for focal neurologic deficits, whose absence slightly lowered this likelihood (NLR, 0.6; 95% CI, 0.4-0.9). Only new or worsening seizures (positive likelihood ratio [PLR], 5.4; 95% CI, 0.8-36.6) and history of brain hardware (PLR, 5.4; 95% CI, 1.2-25.3) moderately increased the probability of having a positive composite head CT. IN PRACTICE: "Given that there is a high rate of abnormal head CTs, our study suggests that older ED patients with delirium should receive a head CT as part of the diagnostic workup, even in the absence of any risk factors," the authors wrote. NEW DELHI, June 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A global survey conducted by Springer Nature reveals that researchers in India are calling for more balanced and responsible approaches to research assessment, with an emphasis on transparency, integrity, and moving beyond over-reliance on quantitative metrics. The 2024 Research Assessment Survey, which gathered responses from over 6,300 researchers worldwide—including 764 from India—provides important insights into how researchers experience and perceive current evaluation practices. While researchers globally continue to be assessed based on a combination of publication counts, citations, and grant funding, Indian respondents reported a stronger reliance on purely quantitative measures than their global peers. Notably, 21% of Indian researchers said they are assessed entirely by quantitative metrics such as number of publications, citations, or grant income. This figure is higher than the global average (16%), and even Asia overall (17%). The contrast is particularly striking when compared to the United Kingdom, where only 5% reported being assessed solely on such metrics—reflecting a strong shift in UK research culture toward more holistic evaluations. At the same time, there is clear appetite for change: 49% of Indian respondents said they believe there should be a balanced mix of quantitative and qualitative criteria in research assessments, suggesting growing interest in reform.
