Extra deputy CDMs needed for multi-city Sea Games, says OCM
OCM president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria said a number of candidates have already been shortlisted for the CDM and deputy CDM positions.
"The issue is in terms of logistics, the games will be held across three areas - Bangkok, Songkhla and Chonburi so we have to discuss the selection of one CDM and a few deputies, two at least. We will have to look at three or four personalities," said Norza yesterday (June 23).
"It (candidates) will be a mix of sports administrators from OCM, former athletes as well as representatives from national sports associations.
"We have shortlisted a few names and I will be in Penang tomorrow (today) with the Youth and Sports Minister (Hannah Yeoh).
"I will discuss this with her. Although the right (to select CDM) is with OCM, we feel that we should also get approval from the minister."
The appointment of at least two deputy CDMs has been the norm in recent editions of the Sea Games though there has yet to be three deputy CDMs appointed for the games.
Tenpin bowling legend Datuk Shalin Zulkifli and former national squash player Sharon Wee served as deputy CDMs for the 2023 Phnom Penh games. Datuk Nasir Ali led the contingent as CDM.
On a separate note, Norza added that Yonex has been appointed to supply the apparel for the national contingent at the Thailand Sea Games.
"We have appointed Yonex, so we will sit down with them (to discuss) the design and everything. We will also bring in the National Sports Council this time," he said.
The official attire originally unveiled for the Paris Olympics contingent last year was poorly received by the public and prompted OCM to redesign the kit prior to the games.

Malaysia Esports League 2025 introduces fairer selection system
THE Malaysia Esports League 2025 (MEL25) is set to revolutionise the local esports scene with a revamped selection system aimed at fostering fairness and inclusivity. Esports Integrated (ESI) announced today that MEL25 will implement a national leaderboard to track player performance throughout the tournament from January to August 2025. This new system integrates with MyLeague, managed by the Malaysian Esports Federation (MESF), allowing teams and individuals to accumulate points via online or offline competitions. The format ensures broader opportunities for players to showcase their skills on a level playing field. 'The new MEL25 format reflects ESI's commitment to supporting the government's vision for a sustainable and comprehensive esports talent development platform,' said ESI CEO Ahmed Faris Amir. MESF president Muhammad Naim Al Amin added that the system aims to expand opportunities for consistent performers. 'This format not only nurtures new talent but also streamlines the selection of top athletes for international events like the SEA Games or Asian Games,' he explained. MEL25 will feature nine championship titles, including eFootball Mobile, PUBG Mobile, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. The top-ranked players and teams will advance to the finals, held every weekend from August 3 to 24 at ESI Hub, Spacerubix in Puchong. - Bernama

Silambam officially back in Selangor Sukma after review
KUALA LUMPUR: Traditional martial art silambam has been included in next year's Selangor Malaysia Games (Sukma), joining petanque and muaythai as optional sports following a review by the supreme committee. The decision came after a special meeting on Thursday attended by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria. The proposal was put forward by Selangor State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship executive councillor Najwan Halimi, who also chairs the organising committee. The Selangor Sukma will now feature 30 compulsory and seven optional sports, with the committee confirming that no further proposals or appeals will be considered. Silambam's initial omission had drawn concern from several quarters of the community before the review led to its inclusion. Hannah said her ministry is also exploring "Non-Sukma Games" for sports not on the programme. "Additionally, a new model for organising Sukma after the 2028 Kelantan edition is being studied to ensure the continuous development of sports and athletes without placing a heavy financial burden on the government," she said. The Selangor Sukma will take place across nine districts from August 15-24, 2026.

Malaysia set to send strongest track cycling squad for SEA Games
Onwards to glory: Injured but determined Mohd Shah Firdaus Sahrom hopes to land on the podium at the Asian Track Cycling Championships starting in Nilai on Friday. PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian National Cycling Federation of Malaysia (MNCF) will send their strongest track cycling squad, led by Track Nation Cup keirin champion Mohd Shah Firdaus Sahrom, for the Thailand SEA Games in December. MNCF finally breathed a sigh of relief when they received approval to send 28 national cyclists under category A to compete in the SEA Games. The decision was reached after the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) selection meeting saw the national road cycling team obtain additional funds to compete in the Thailand SEA Games. MNCF secretary Ahmad Arif Astaman said they were grateful for the approval of the justification presented on putting all except three cyclists under category A. "We will send national cyclists to compete in all four disciplines - road, track, BMX and mountain bike," said Ahmad. "MNCF will also commit the strongest team for the track cycling events. Track cycling is rarely held at the SEA Games and the current batch of cyclists have never had the chance to compete before, so we will give them the opportunity to stand on the podium. "Malaysia will be chasing for gold medals in especially the road and track cycling disciplines. "We are grateful for the support shown by the National Sports Council (NSC) and OCM. "It's also due to the close cooperation with NSC and OCM who understand our needs at the SEA Games. "This (putting under category A) will boost the confidence of the cyclists to perform their best and bring glory to the country.'' Malaysia should dominate the men's track cycling competition, which takes place at the outdoor Hua Mak Velodrome in Bangkok. Thailand have four events for men (team sprint, keirin, team pursuit and points race) while the scratch race is the event for the women. Malaysia emerged overall champions with 13 golds the last time track cycling was contested at the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur. The national road cycling team, with support from Terengganu Cycling Team and MPC's predecessor Team Sapura Cycling, have consistently delivered gold for Malaysia at the SEA Games over the past decade. Malaysia have won six gold medals in men's road cycling over the last five editions of the SEA Games.
