Liverpool join Chelsea in transfer race for £43m star who 'wants Anfield move'
Lyon star Malick Fofana has been on Chelsea's radar for a potential summer transfer but the Blues have now reportedly been joined by Liverpool in the race for his signature
Liverpool are ready to rival Chelsea for Malick Fofana, and could benefit from the player reportedly favouring a move to Merseyside. The Lyon star, 20, has been linked with a £43m exit as the Ligue 1 club continue to trim their squad after selling Rayan Cherki to Manchester City.
Belgium international Fofana joined Lyon from Gent in 2023 and starred in their run to the Europa League quarter-finals last season. The winger scored six goals in 10 appearances in the competition, and also won a penalty in the dramatic 5-4 defeat at Manchester United which saw his team eliminated.
According to L'Equipe, Chelsea have made contact with Lyon's management and now Liverpool have joined the race. The Reds are believed to have made contact with Fofana's new representatives Roc Nation, whose roster also includes Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli and Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior.
Earlier in the year, Fofana's then agent Bobo Fofana hinted a move to Anfield might well be his preference were he to leave Lyon. Since then, it has emerged that a bid in the region of £43m might be enough to get a deal over the line.
"The choice of heart would be Liverpool. He has the potential to enter the rotation, and above all, we would like to see him succeed African legends such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, and El-hadji Diouf," Bobo Fofana told AfricaFoot. "Now, the choice of reason would be Newcastle, a well-structured club that could be a first step to gain experience before, perhaps, joining a club in the European top 5."
Liverpool's reported interest comes amid continued uncertainty over the future of Luis Diaz. The Colombian star continues to be linked with Barcelona, though Liverpool are standing firm and want big money if he is to leave.
"I'm very happy at Liverpool - I've always said so. They've welcomed me very well," Diaz told beIN SPORTS during the June international break. "If Liverpool gives us a good extension, or I have to see out my two-year contract, I'll be happy."
Lyon have been trimming their squad after missing out on Champions League qualification as they look to deal with financial pressures. Cherki's exit has been the highest-profile move so far, with the playmaker joining Manchester City for around £36.5m, while former West Ham winger Said Benrahma has left for Saudi side Neom.
"I want to win everything with City," said Cherki, who made his first City start against Wydad Casablanca on Wednesday. "When I spoke with Pep [Guardiola] he said he wanted me. He was very, very clear [on that] and the system, the club, the city is very good for me."

Liverpool told to make swap deal as 'concrete interest' emerges in next transfer
Florian Wirtz is set to be Liverpool's next signing but the Reds' business is not done as Arne Slot engages in a busier summer overhaul of the club than 12 months ago The transfer window is open once again and Liverpool are whirring away to continue a busy start to the summer. Already the Reds have added Jeremie Frimpong and said goodbye to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher and there's more to be done. Florian Wirtz is set to be next through the door with a medical to complete on Friday. The German international will join in a British record deal. Milos Kerkez could soon follow from Brighton as Arne Slot looks to boost his resources. That could see Andy Robertson consider an exit however as he enters the final year of his deal. Slot will hope to tie up the deals quickly after the Premier League fixtures were released. The Dutchman will hope to have a full squad at his disposal in time for facing Bournemouth on the opening weekend. Mirror Football takes a look at some of the latest news and transfer rumours from around Anfield. Ekitike interest Liverpool have a 'concrete interest' in Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, according to reports. The Reds will look to sign the young French star, particularly if they can offload Darwin Nunez. The Uruguay internaitonal is said to have drawn attention from Napoli, who are believed to be in contact with the player's camp. Liverpool are hoping to find a solution and his exit could spark a move for Chelsea target Ekitike. Alavarez swap deal Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann reckons Liverpool should use Darwin Nunez as part of a deal to sign Atletico Madrid ace Julian Alvarez. The Spanish side already appear to have poured cold water on an exit for the former Manchester City forward but the ex-Germany international believes the Reds could prove persuasive. Hamann has told "I'd love to see Julian Alvarez at Liverpool and I think Darwin Nunez being part of the deal would make a lot of sense. I think Nunez is tailor made for Atletico Madrid as a physical centre forward, someone who will work so hard which is what Diego Simeone wants. "Alvarez would also be a fantastic addition at Liverpool, he played in the shadow of Erling Haaland at Manchester City but really added to his reputation in Madrid. He led the line, scored goals and made life a nuisance for the back lines he played against, I think he would be a brilliant signing. Wirtz's parents earn fee Liverpool are set to pay £8.55million to Florian Wirtz's parent s as they move towards confirming the megamoney signing.. The German international is expected to soon complete a transfer to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen. With a medical expected to take place on Friday, Wirtz will not be the only member of his family to benefit. The Leverkusen talisman is represented by his parents rather than an agency. Wirtz's parents Hans and Karin joined him when he travelled to England last month, and negotiated on his behalf. Sport Bild, per Sport Witness, claim they will see €10m (£8.55m) over the course of their son's contract with Liverpool. Thursday's briefing: Mudryk charged and Real held on Alexander-Arnold debut
Chelsea's Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged by the Football Association over an alleged breach of anti-doping regulations. Trent Alexander-Arnold's Real Madrid debut ended in frustration at the Club World Cup, but Manchester City's Rico Lewis endured an even more disappointing night as he was sent off. England edged their way into the European Under-21 Championship quarter-finals despite defeat by Germany. Mudryk charged Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged by the Football Association with violating anti-doping rules. The 24-year-old, an £88.5million signing from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023, has not played since being handed a provisional suspension in December after he returned a positive test, reportedly for the banned substance meldonium. An FA statement said: 'We can confirm that Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with anti-doping rule violations alleging the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance, in terms of regulations three and four of the FA's anti-doping regulations.' Rico sees red Pep Guardiola leapt to the defence of Rico Lewis after the Manchester City defender's 'unnecessary' sending-off in their Club World Cup opener. Lewis was dismissed by Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti after catching Samuel Obeng in the face following a sliding challenge two minutes from the end of a 2-0 victory over Wydad Casablanca. City boss Guardiola said: 'He touched the ball. For the speed they go to touch the ball – for the Newton's theory your leg has to be a little bit higher and the other player was down. 'Rico had no intention. It was unnecessary, honestly, the red card, but the referee had a different opinion and he's the boss.' Madrid pay the penalty Debutants Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen suffered a frustrating evening in Miami as Real Madrid were held to a 1-1 Club World Cup draw by Saudi side Al Hilal. Madrid boss Xabi Alonso and opposite number Simone Inzaghi were both taking charge of their new clubs for the first time. Gonzalo Garcia fired the Spanish giants into a 34th-minute lead but Ruben Neves levelled from the penalty spot before the break. Alonso's men had the better of the second half, but could not find a way past stubborn opponents as Federico Valverde's stoppage-time penalty was saved. Reigning champions limp into last eight England will play Spain in the quarter-finals of the European Under-21 Championship after they were beaten 2-1 by Germany in their final group game in Slovakia to finish runners-up in Group B. Lee Carsley's side needed a victory in Nitra to go through to the knockout rounds in first place, but despite already-qualified Germany making 11 changes, the reigning champions struggled to impose themselves. Goals from Ansgar Knauff and Nelson Weiper sent the 2023 winners to defeat and left them to face pre-tournament favourites Spain – who they beat in the final two years ago – in Trnava on Saturday. Bournemouth's Alex Scott tapped home 15 minutes from time from Omari Hutchinson's cross to make it 2-1, with Slovenia's defeat by the Czech Republic enough to secure England's passage. What's on today? The Club World Cup is the focus once again as Lionel Messi's Inter Miami look to register their first win of the competition when they take on Porto in Atlanta, having drawn their opening fixture against Al Ahly 0-0. The Egyptian side are also in action again, this time against Palmeiras.

Arsenal reach striker 'agreement' as Thomas Partey transfer decision made
Arsenal have been pushing to sign a striker all summer and it appears that boss Mikel Arteta may now finally get his wish as he bolsters his squad ahead of another title challenge Arsenal are finally closing in on making the striker signing they have been desperate for all summer. The Gunners have finished as runners-up in the Premier League for three years in succession. Last season, they saw Liverpool leap ahead of them in the title race as Manchester City faltered. Many pundits have pointed to their lack of a regular goalscorer as the reason the Gunners have fallen short. Boss Mikel Arteta made it a priority for this summer's window, with Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko their top targets. It appears they have now made their choice between that duo with a deal now close. That news comes as former star Jack Wilshere issued his advice to Arteta for who to target this summer. And Thomas Partey is being pursued by Fenerbahce as Arsenal await a decision over his future. Partey is a free agent and has an offer from the Gunners on the table, though his yet to signal his views on his future. Here Mirror Football rounds up all the latest Arsenal transfer news. Striker agreement reached Arsenal have reached an agreement with Benjamin Sesko over personal terms in a major step towards completing a deal for the RB Leipzig star. The 22-year-old has long been one of their top targets. And it has now been claimed by German outlet Sport Bild that the Gunners and Sesko have 'reached an agreement' over contract terms. While that agreement has been reached, Arsenal still need to negotiate with Leipzig. It is said that the Premier League side have signalled they will table an offer that is 'in line' with Leipzig's £60million price tag. The Bundesliga side are prepared to sell their star striker after missing out on European qualification. Wilshere shares tip Former Arsenal star Jack Wilshere has urged Mikel Arteta to push for Alexander Isak this summer. That is despite the Gunners' interest in the Newcastle man seeming to have faded in recent weeks. 'I think they need a nine. You can add depth around the squad, but right now it's a nine. I would go for Isak, but I think that is probably a bit unattainable," Wilshere said. He has experience of the league, he's scored goals, helped a team get into the Champions League. I would go for Isak as number one." Mourinho eyes Partey Jose Mourinho is eyeing a move for Thomas Partey as his contract counts down to expiration. Party will be a free agent from the start of July and is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal with the Gunners. And according to Fotomac, Fenerbahce boss Mourinho is looking to take advantage of that uncertainty. It is claimed that the Turkish giants have been approached by Partey's representatives as they search for prospective clubs. The final decision will rest with Mourinho, who is in the market for a midfielder. Partey would be interested in a move to Istanbul and if he did move on, it would be a bitter blow for Arsenal.
