Oscar voters required to view all films before casting ballots
The new rule, which addresses a longstanding concern that voters are skipping some films, will apply for the next Oscars ceremony in March 2026, the Academy said in a statement.
The Academy previously operated under an honor system that voters would see every Oscar-nominated film before casting their ballots.
However, with the number of nominees growing in recent years, some voters have admitted not fully fulfilling that duty.
Under the new system, Academy members will be tracked on the organization's voters-only streaming platform to make sure they have watched each film.
For movies seen elsewhere, such as in cinemas or at festival screenings, voters will be required to "fill out a form" vouching for when and where it was watched, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
For the Best Picture category alone, which has 10 nominated films, competing studios traditionally host glitzy events to woo voters during their awards campaigns, with parties, screenings and festival showings, sometimes followed by Q&A sessions with the stars and filmmakers.
The Academy also weighed in on a controversy that arose during the last voting season, which was marred by questions about the use of artificial intelligence in movies, such as "The Brutalist" and "Emilia Perez."
In guidance issued Monday, the Academy said AI and other digital tools will "neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination."
The new rule clarifies that the use of technology is not disqualifying.
"The Academy and each branch will judge the achievement, taking into account the degree to which a human was at the heart of the creative authorship when choosing which movie to award." —AFP

British actress Helen Mirren has said that while she is a feminist, the next James Bond "has to be a bloke." It comes after Amazon MGM Studios, which has taken creative control over the 007 character, revealed last month that "Peaky Blinders" creator Steven Knight would be writing the script for the next film. The Oscar-winning actress told Saga Magazine: "I'm such a feminist, but James Bond has to be a bloke. You can't have a woman. It just doesn't work. Mirren, 80, stars alongside former 007 actor Pierce Brosnan in the new "Thursday Murder Club" film, a cosy crime drama adapted from the best-selling book by game show host Richard Osman. Pierce, 72, agreed with the actress about the next portrayal of Bond and told the magazine: "Oh, I think it has to be a man." He added: "I wish [Amazon] them well. I'm so excited to see the next man come on the stage and to see a whole new exuberance and life for this character. "I adore the world of James Bond. It's been very good to me. It's the gift that keeps on giving. "And I'm just a member of the audience now, sitting back, saying: 'Show us what you're going to do.' Mirren previously told the Standard that "the whole concept of James Bond is drenched and born out of profound sexism" and added: "Women have always been a major and incredibly important part of the Secret Service, they always have been." In the forthcoming "Thursday Murder Club" film, the veteran actress plays a retired spy, who is also the founder and leader of the club. Speaking about her character Elizabeth, she told Saga: "So many women have worked in that world. She's a manifestation of a reality, that's for sure." Asked if she is a better portrayal of a spy than Bond, she responded: "More realistic. But not so much fun as Bond!" She added: "The great thing about a film like this is that it reminds everyone, as an older person I have a brain. I have agency, energy, commitment, passion, and intellect. It doesn't all stop when you're 40." Brosnan said the film, directed by "Harry Potter" director Chris Columbus, would also appeal to anyone who likes the film series about wizardry and added: "This is like a 'Harry Potter' retirement home." Dolly Parton named Guinness World Records icon
US country star Dolly Parton has been named a Guinness World Records icon for holding 11 record-breaking titles. As part of its 70th anniversary celebrations, the company - which lists world record achievements - has honoured the "Jolene" singer, 79, with an Icon certificate, presented to her at her studios in Nashville, Tennessee. Her record titles include most consecutive decades with top 10 album entries on the Billboard country chart, most studio albums released by a female country singer, and most Grammy nominations for a female country artist. She was also the first country singer to be nominated for the EGOT — an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony — aka the "Grand Slam of showbusiness." Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief at Guinness World Records, said: "Dolly is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated writers and performers in the history of country music, as reflected in her many Guinness World Records certificates, but her reach and influence extend far beyond the musical world. "There are so many projects close to her heart — poverty relief, education, medical research, and of course the Imagination Library free-books campaign — and it's these important, life-changing initiatives that propel Dolly into a different league. She truly is a living legend, and it's an honour to bestow GWR Icon status upon her." Guinness World Records published its first book in London in 1955 and has sold more than 143 million copies in over 100 countries since then. The Icon certificate has previously been awarded to stars including Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Drake, Paul McCartney, and Elton John. Parton, who is from Tennessee, released her debut album, "Hello, I'm Dolly," in 1967 and had a string of hits in the 1970s. By the 1980s, she was a huge star and made her movie debut in the screwball comedy "9 to 5." Her most recent album was "Rockstar," released in 2023, and she recently featured in a version of Sabrina Carpenter's "Please Please Please." Odyssey filming ignites backlash for Christopher Nolan
Dakhla- There's a first-time for everything, including the Oscar-winning director behind the Batman: Dark Knight trilogy and the Oppenheimer movie. It's the first time he's directing a story as historic and well-known as The Odyssey and it's the first time he's faced such enormous backlash for his project as he's shooting the scenes for the upcoming movie. Set to release on July 17 2026, Christopher Nolan and his film-crew already began filming the project in various locations across Europe and Africa. One such location they some scenes was the city of Dakhla. The city is located in the region of Western Sahara and is largely occupied by Morocco, despite the fact that the region is often considered as a non-self-governing territory by organisations such as the United Nations. After filming some of the movie's scenes in the city for around four days, the film crew has already faced the heat against residents, including the organisers of the Western Sahara Film Festival (FiSahara). Protestors continue to stand against Mr. Nolan's production, urging the Hollywood team to stop shooting there by highlighting their contribution to 'Morocco's repression of Sahrawi people'. FiSahara added— 'Dakhla is not just a beautiful place with cinematic sand dunes. First and foremost, it is an occupied and militarised city,' Reminding everyone of the continuous oppression the locals face from Morocco, forcing users to face the fact that Hollywood's continuous filming in Western Sahara, whether intentional or not, is seen by locals as support for Morocco's ongoing oppression of the city. Famous actor Javier Bardem reposted FiSahara's statement on Instagram, adding fuel to the fire by drawing attention to the consequences of Nolan's actions online. The backlash spread so far that the Polisario Front's Ministry of Culture stepped in, raising concerns about the production becoming 'a dangerous form of cultural normalization' if they don't stop filming there. Amidst the controversy, Nolan and Universal Pictures still seem to receive lots of support from Moroccan residents. Reda Benjelloun of the Moroccan Cinematographic Center praised the decision to film in the city, calling it a potential 'future hub of international productions' for increasing its global visibility. While the film team has yet to respond, a statement is expected soon.
