June 2 (UPI) -- Jac Caglianone, one of the top prospects in baseball, is headed to the big leagues, a source familiar with the move confirmed Monday. He is expected to make his Kansas City Royals debut against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Caglianone is the No. 10 prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. The former Florida Gators first baseman, who joined the Royals as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, also spent time as an outfielder and designated hitter this season in the minor leagues.

He hit .322 with 15 home runs and 56 RBIs over 50 games this year between stints with the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers and Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Caglianone homered six times in an eight-game stretch with the Storm Chasers, which spanned from May 22 to Friday.
The Royals (31-29) sit in fourth place in the American League Central, eight games behind the division-leading Detroit Tigers (39-21). They hit an MLB-low 34 home runs through their first 30 games of the season.

Red Sox Blockbuster Trade Idea Cuts Ties With Rafael Devers for MLB's No. 5 Prospect

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Boston Red Sox are nine games back of the New York Yankees for the American League East lead and four games out of the final Wild Card spot. While they are not sellers yet, they could be by the time the July 31 deadline rolls around. The Red Sox season has been highlighted by injuries and drama. One of the biggest storylines has been Rafael Devers' position. He was moved off of third base when the team signed Alex Bregman. When Triston Casas went down, he was reportedly asked by Craig Breslow to play first base, which upset him and led to a rant in the media. Now, with Alex Bregman hurt, the team does not seem interested in letting him play third base, making for a messy situation. Compound that with the fact that the team is not playing well, and the team could be ready to move on from Devers and embrace a youth movement. The Red Sox are already relying on contributions from young players like Ceddanne Rafaela, Marcelo Mayer, Wilyer Abreu and Kristian Campbell. FanSided's Christopher Kline suggested the Red Sox trade Devers to the Philadelphia Phillies to add another young star, Andrew Painter, MLB Pipeline's No. 5 prospect, to their young core. BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - MAY 08: Rafael Devers #11 of the Boston Red Sox looks on after hitting a one-run home run in the seventh inning against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park on May 08,... BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS - MAY 08: Rafael Devers #11 of the Boston Red Sox looks on after hitting a one-run home run in the seventh inning against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park on May 08, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. More"While Devers' production is smoothing over negative feelings in the fanbase, there is palpable tension with the front office," wrote Kline. "Boston is under no pressure to rush the 28-year-old out the door, as he's under contract through 2033, but now might be a good time to cut bait on a negative defender with a hefty salary number through his age-36 season. The Phillies stomach major long-term commitments better than most franchises, and there's an open slot at third base if Philadelphia decides to reroute Alec Bohm, which could return Devers to his position of choice." Trading Devers would come as a huge shock, and the Red Sox would have to practically be eliminated from the postseason to even consider it. However, trading Devers for a package centered around Painter could set up the Red Sox for years of success. The Red Sox already have an ace in Garrett Crochet. Adding Painter would help them solve their woes around their ace. Additionally, opening up the DH spot would finally give the team a way to get Roman Anthoy, the top prospect in baseball, into the big leagues. Essentially, the Phillies would be parting ways with Devers to then go into next season with Crochet, Campbell, Mayer, Anthony, Abreu, Jarren Duran and Painter as the pillars of their team. Meanwhile, the Phillies would be capitalizing on their opportunity to win now, before they potentially lose Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto in free agency. Painter is not going to help them win this season, most likely, but Devers would. It would also allow them to flip Alec Bohm for some outfield help. Paul Skenes to Red Sox? Insane Trade Thought Pushed by MLB Network Host

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Last year's National League Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes, the 2023 No. 1 overall draft pick, continues to pitch at a Cy Young Award-worthy level, but his talents are seemingly being wasted on the Pittsburgh Pirates. After finishing 10 games under .500 last season, 17 games out in last place in the NL Central, the Pirates are even worse this year — already 15 1/2 games behind the division-leading Chicago Cubs and 13 games under .500 with 100 games remaining. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 4: Paul Skenes #30 of the Pittsburgh Pirates looks on during batting practice before the game against the Houston Astros at PNC Park on June 4, 2025 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 4: Paul Skenes #30 of the Pittsburgh Pirates looks on during batting practice before the game against the Houston Astros at PNC Park on June 4, 2025 in Pittsburgh, the same time, Skenes leads the National League in pitcher WAR at 3.2, WHIP at 0.88, and fewest hits allowed per nine innings with 5.8. His 2.05 ERA is second in the league. Skenes has also been a workhorse, with NL-best figures in games started (13), innings pitched (83 1/3), and complete games, though his league-leading total in the latter category is one. Yet with the Pirates, Skenes this year has a losing record of 4-6. The Pirates have lost eight of his 13 starts. In fact, in nine of his starts, Skenes has pitched at least six innings while allowing two or fewer earned runs. The Pirates record in those games is 4-5. With all of that in mind, MLB Network studio host Greg Amsinger threw out a wild idea. "So every fifth day we're going watch Paul Skenes shove and the Pirates lose 1-0 or 2-0. We're going to do that every fifth day?" Amsinger asked his co-hosts, former players Dan PLesac and Harold Reynolds, on a Wednesday broadcast. Then he pitched his trade idea. "If Paul Skenes were traded to the Boston Red Sox for Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, and Kristian Campbell, would you do it if you were the Pirates?" More MLB: Pirates Owner Wasting Paul Skenes Era, 'Should be Embarrassed,' MLB Analyst Says Mayer, Anthony and Campbell are known as the "Big Three" among Red Sox fans, as the organization's three top prospects. Mayer and Campbell have already made it to the Boston big league roster. Anthony is the No. 1 prospect in baseball, though for some reason the Red Sox have kept him at Triple-A Worcester all season so far. Together, that big three, along with several other highly-rated Red Sox prospects, represent the future of the Boston organization. Plesac, who pitched 18 seasons in MLB for six different teams, wasn't having it. "I'm not into trading him," Plesac said, referring to Skenes. "He's the identity of the Pirates. He's the one attraction that you have to get you to go out and watch a Pirate game." The MLB Network hosts did not address, however, the Red Sox's perspective on the proposed trade. Would the Red Sox sell their future for Skenes, even with four years of team control for the 22-year-old prodigy? It should be noted the Red Sox already have a starting pitcher who this season has been arguably as good as Skenes, or at least very close to his level. Has left-hander Garret Crochet fared better with Boston than Skenes with Pittsburgh? Crochet has a better ERA than Skenes at 1.98, and he leads the American League in strikeouts with 101 (Skenes has fanned 85). Crochet has also started 13 games, and thrown a league-leading 82 innings. His won-loss record with the Red Sox is 5-4. In his seven starts of at least six innings, allowing two runs or fewer, the Red Sox are 5-2. More MLB: Red Sox Frustrate Fans With Call-Up of Triple-A Outfielder Not Named Roman Anthony

President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping discuss trade deal in 'very good' phone call

June 5 (UPI) -- President Donald Trump said Thursday that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke on the phone that morning about the trade deal currently in place between the United States and China. Trump described the call as "very good" in a post on Truth Social, adding he and Xi discussed the "intricacies" of the trade deal between the two nations. "The call lasted approximately one and a half hours, and resulted in a very positive conclusion for both countries." Trump posted to Truth Social Thursday. Trump said the two hashed out a future meeting in regard to rare earth minerals. "There should no longer be any questions respecting the complexity of rare earth products. Our respective teams will be meeting shortly at a location to be determined," Trump said. The Trump administration had expected China to ease export restrictions on rare earth minerals after talks held last month. China had imposed those restrictions in April in response to tariffs levied by Trump on Chinese goods. Trump also noted that Xi invited him to visit China, which was also confirmed by Chinese state media. "I reciprocated. As presidents of two great nations, this is something that we both look forward to doing," he said. Neither spoke of Ukraine's war on Russia or any issues that involved Iran, according to Trump, who added that the media will be informed when the meeting between the two countries will take place. However, as per the account posted to Chinese state media Thursday, Xi also allegedly said the United States should "handle Taiwan question with caution" in order to avoid "danger of conflict, confrontation," and that Trump told him "Chinese students are welcome to study" in the United States. There has been no confirmation from the Trump administration in regard to either of these claims. The U.S. State Department announced last month it would "aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields. We will also revise visa criteria to enhance scrutiny of all future visa applications from the People's Republic of China and Hong Kong." Trump made no mention of either of those points of conversation purported by Chinese state media. The two leaders are believed to have last spoken in January before Trump's inauguration.
