Kansas City Royals to promote top prospect Jac Caglianone

June 2 (UPI) -- Jac Caglianone, one of the top prospects in baseball, is headed to the big leagues, a source familiar with the move confirmed Monday. He is expected to make his Kansas City Royals debut against the St. Louis Cardinals. Caglianone is the No. 10 prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. The former Florida Gators first baseman, who joined the Royals as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, also spent time as an outfielder and designated hitter this season in the minor leagues. Advertisement He hit .322 with 15 home runs and 56 RBIs over 50 games this year between stints with the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers and Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Caglianone homered six times in an eight-game stretch with the Storm Chasers, which spanned from May 22 to Friday. The Royals (31-29) sit in fourth place in the American League Central, eight games behind the division-leading Detroit Tigers (39-21). They hit an MLB-low 34 home runs through their first 30 games of the season. Royals' Ragans rehabs against Springfield Cardinals

SPRINGFIELD–Earlier this month, Jac Caglianone, the rising star in the Kansas City Royals minor league system, made his debut at Hammons Field for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Saturday night, it was a rehab start that brought Royals All-Star pitcher, Cole Ragans to Springfield. The 27-year-old lefty took the bump 14 days after going on the injured list with a strained left groin. He got the first two hitters of the game out, but then surrendered three runs in the first inning – a solo home run by Jeremy Rivas. Then, a 2-run double off the bat of Dakota Harris. Ragans did settle down between the second and third innings. He recorded a pair of strikeouts in each inning. But then, Ragans got dinged for another two runs in the bottom of the 4th, and that ended his night. In total, Ragans stat line was 3.2 IP, 4 ER, 7 hits, 1 walk, and 6 strikeouts. It wasn't his cleanest outing, but he did pitch pain free and credits Springfield hitters for their aggression at the plate. 'They came out swinging, so I was just trying to keep them off balance,' said Royals pitcher, Cole Ragans. I mixed in some good curveballs, changeups, those were probably two primary ones. The groin feels great. Outside of results felt really good out there, excited to get back with the guys.' Northwest Arkansas did end up winning the game, 10-8. It was the highest scoring game at Hammons Field this season. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Ducks on a baseball pitch and other animal invasions

Fans at a baseball game got a quacking surprise last weekend after a pair of ducks decided to land on the field during the event in Missouri. The game, which was between minor league teams the Springfield Cardinals and the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, was delayed as attempts were made to remove the ducks which decided to go for a wander around the field. The first bird flew away after being followed by members of the field crew, but the second one took a little more convincing.

Former baseball slugger Jac Caglianone shows power in Baseball America prospect report

Former baseball slugger Jac Caglianone shows power in Baseball America prospect report Former Florida baseball standout Jac Caglianone is off to a blazing start to the second year of his professional career with the Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals, a member of the Kansas City Royals' minor league system. Originally drafted by the Royals in 2024, Cags spent his first year of pro ball at High-A with the Quad Cities River Bandits, where he put up solid numbers despite being 1.3 years younger than the average player at that level. He more or less replicated those numbers in the 2024 Arizona Fall League with the Surprise Saguaros. Now 2.1 years younger than the typical Double-A prospect, Caglianone is beginning to truly break out of his shell, proving the potency of his bat that made him a first-round pick. Baseball America recently took note of his superlative slugging and included the former Gator in its prospects wire news feed. "Caglianone is known across the sport for his immense power. Think Paul Bunyan with the wind at his back. He proved it again on Tuesday by clubbing a pair of longballs in Northwest Arkansas' series-opening win over Wichita. The blasts were his seventh and eighth of the season and drove home four of the Naturals' five runs," it offers. "He's one off the Texas League's home run lead, which is unsurprising. Perhaps more encouraging is the .330 average he's sporting, which ranks fifth on the circuit and speaks to an improved ability to make contact. For a guy of Caglianone's strength, contact is the key to the castle." Jac Caglianone's 2025 stats Caglianone is batting .330 this spring with an on-base percentage of .406 and a slugging percentage of .606 — good for an impressive OPS of 1.012 in 128 plate appearances. Out of 36 total base hits, he has six doubles and eight home runs, along with 15 walks and 30 strikeouts. The first baseman and designated hitter — plus, he is still listed as a pitcher — also has a stolen base and a caught stealing credit to him as well.
