Taylor Swift fans had no idea iconic song was originally written for movie

Daily Mirror25-06-2025
Taylor Swift fans have been left baffled after discovering one of the singer's tracks was actually written to be part of a 2013 film - and it's not one you'd expect
Taylor Swift fans are just discovering the origins of one of her lesser-known songs. The singer-songwriter has 11 studio albums to her name and has released hundreds of songs, including tracks that have been written as part of film soundtracks or standalone singles that don't appear on her albums.
But one little-known Taylor Swift track has got people talking lately, as some of her fans have only just found out how it came into existence. Following the 2019 dispute over the ownership of Swift's back catalogue, the singer began re-recording some of her earlier albums and often included unreleased tracks that hadn't been on the original release.

On the Tangerine Edition of 1989 (Taylor's Version), released in 2023, Swift included a track titled Sweeter Than Fiction. She also performed it live for the first time during her Eras Tour in Amsterdam in 2024.

But although the song had never appeared on an album before, it was not a new song - and it was actually released in 2013 as part of the soundtrack for a very unlikely film.
In a TikTok clip shared by the podcast Talk of the Townsends, co-hosts Benedict and Hannah Townsend talk about the little-known song and reveal that it was created for the 2013 film, One Chance.
One Chance is a biographical film about Britain's Got Talent winner and opera singer Paul Potts. It stars James Corden as the singer and Julie Walters as Paul's mother, Yvonne.
In the video, Hannah stated: "I genuinely think a Taylor Swift fact that a lot of people won't know is that she wrote Sweeter Than Fiction for the Paul Potts movie.
"At the time, Taylor Swift was out of cycle, meaning she wasn't releasing any more music until the next album. But the Paul Potts story, with James Corden, apparently, she was like, 'I have to be involved in that'. I'm not sure if she was just so enthralled with Paul Potts and his story.

"So she wrote Sweeter Than Fiction [for it]. And she sang it on The Eras Tour, I believe it was in Amsterdam. She sang Sweeter Than Fiction. A song from the Paul Potts movie was sung on The Eras Tour."
Swift previously spoke about wanting to be involved in the film during an interview with BBC Newsbeat in 2013, where she said her record label didn't want her to take on the project until she begged them to be a part of it.
She said: "My management, my label were like, 'No new music until the next album comes out.' Then I saw the movie and I was like, 'I have to be a part of this.'

"I think this movie is so incredible, it's funny, it's adorable, it's heart-warming, and I'm lucky to be a part of it."
The song even earned Swift a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song, although it lost out to Ordinary Love by U2, which was written for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
Commenters on the Townsends' video were baffled to learn of the song's origin. Even some who declared it their "favourite Taylor Swift song" had no idea where it came from.
One person said: "I do love Taylor, but sometimes I am just flabbergasted by some of the projects she's been involved in." Another added: "This is how I learn there's a whole Paul Potts movie."

I've got 11 kids and all their names start with letter A including my girl called Answer – trolls say they'll be teased

This isn't the first time the mum has faced backlash online NO KIDDING I've got 11 kids and all their names start with letter A including my girl called Answer – trolls say they'll be teased Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) COMING up with one name you love can be hard enough as a parent, let alone 12. But this couple have revealed the unique monikers they gave to their bumper brood - and they all start with the letter A. In the clip, which has amassed over 10 million views, the mum stood with one of her youngest as they went through the whole family sharing their names, There was: Anchor, Anthem, Anderson, Answer, Aniston, Anisa, Angelie, Angel, Andre, Arrow and Armor. But after sharing the unique names people on TikTok weren't so sure what to make of them. Many thought the kids would grow up to be bullied because of their names, whilst others praised the mum for going outside the box with her choices. "They're going to get teased for those names later on, just cruel really," one person commented. "What's happening here? I had to listen again just to make sure I heard it right," a second wrote. "Bro just picked up a dictionary and started naming them in order," someone else joked. "Anchovies was in the bathroom during filming," another joked. Others shared some other name suggestions for the mum, poking fun at her seemingly random A-names. Love Islander reveals US reality show girlfriend is pregnant with their first child together with romantic photoshoot "Armadillo, Alopecia, Avocado," one said. Meanwhile, others suggested: "Ancestor, Ambulance, Alphabet, Acne, Algorithm." Not everyone hates the names though, as one person said: "I love them, stunning children too." "You have a beautiful family," another chimed in. This isn't the first time the mum has faced backlash online though, as trolls roasted her when she revealed she'd been pregnant 15 times since the age of 25 and has barely had a break from baby bumps in nearly two decades. One again posting on the account @TheCollinsKids, the mum stunned fans in May when she announced yet another pregnancy, calling it 'the best Mother's Day surprise.' Karissa and her husband, who've been married for 18 years, welcomed their first child back in their mid-20s and haven't looked back since. Karissa first became a mum at the age of 25, and has subsequently been pregnant when she was 27, 28, 29, 31, 32, 34, 35, 36, 39 and 40. She's also suffered three miscarriages in between. Now, with over 700,000 followers tuning in for a glimpse into her busy, bustling household, Karissa is unapologetic about her life choices and even encourages other women to take the leap into big family life. She said: 'It's not that scary. I promise you will figure it out. And it honestly gets easier. You don't have to keep your hands to yourself! Have all the babies and live with no regrets.' But while many cheer her on from the side-lines, Karissa also faces brutal backlash from trolls who claim her lifestyle is harmful, not just to her, but to her kids. One commenter raged: 'This is not okay – you barely have enough time for each child to get your attention. It's not even funny anymore, I feel bad for the kids.' Another slammed: 'You're hurting your kids by continuing to take attention away from them. No human can give the same amount of love to 12 different kids unless they never sleep.' Others accused the couple of only having children for content, saying the older kids must be doing the bulk of the work around the house. Still, Karissa isn't fazed. For her, motherhood isn't just a lifestyle, it's a calling.

Women's Aid calls out Love Island for showing 'unhealthy patterns of behaviour'

Women's Aid has spoken up after Love Island contestant Harrison, and others, were slammed by viewers for their petrifying behaviour. The reality show hosted by Maya Jama has returned for another season of love triangles, shocking betrayals and unexpected sparks, but one contestant, Harrison, has left a bad taste in people's mouths. After arriving in the villa, Harrison formed a connection with Toni but when he went over to Casa Amor he struck up a relationship with another woman, Lauren, who he brought back to the main villa. After being intimate with her not once, but twice, without Toni's knowledge, it seemed as though he was still stringing her along, leading fans to call his behaviour out. In the latest episode, Toni decided to recouple with Harrison, a decision which provoked upset from even her mum who took to social media to express her dismay at the decision. 'I feel like I just watched my daughter walk out onto train tracks, and there is a bullet train coming right for her,' she said nearly in tears in a three-minute TikTok video. Meanwhile, one fan on X, metgirl, wrote: 'Harrison is genuinely one of the most sickening men ever to be on Love Island.. all he has done is make Toni AND Lauren feel crazy, and he fully enjoys watching them mentally struggle.. sick sick man.' Another, clivetheunicorn, added: 'Is Harrison the biggest villain we've seen?' User ao41825 called his behaviour 'so disgusting' and Alisha called him 'evil'. Other men who have been called out for their behaviour include Harry and Ben, whom Maya herself criticised in the show after comments they made about the women's sexual history and looks. In a new statement in response to Harrison and the other men's behaviour on the show, Women's Aid -a national charity working to end domestic abuse against women & children – released a statement to The Tab. 'In recent years, Love Island and other forms of reality TV have been repeatedly called out by viewers for allowing in contestants that had a history of abusive, coercive and manipulative behaviour in previous relationships. 'As a result, production companies have been more careful when it comes to selecting contestants and calling out toxic behaviours when we see them,' the statement started. Communications manager Jess Wyrne added, however, that 'despite these positive steps, we still see unhealthy patterns of behaviour on these shows, showing just how steeped in misogyny and sexism our society still is.' She continued: 'Women are often lied to, slut-shamed and manipulated, as well as laughed at behind their backs.' Warning of the links between misogyny and sexism leading to 'tolerance of abuse and violence' they added this publicly displayed behaviour 'reinforces a culture that excuses and trivialises violence against women and girls'. The charity has urged more to be done to 'educate contestants' on these issues and praised viewers for calling this toxic behaviour out when they see it. It is not the first time Women's Aid has had to step in during a season of Love Island. In 2022, the charity confirmed it was in talks with ITV regarding duty of care regarding relationships after a series of contestants such as Luca Bish and Dami Hope were called out for how they addressed the women in the villa. More Trending Then, in 2023, Women's Aid urged Love Island to take the accusations of 'controlling' behaviour against former contestant George Fensom seriously after his ex-partners spoke out against him. Meanwhile, per Glamour, Ofcom has reported over 1,000 complaints against the show in just a two-day period earlier this month, with the majority concerning 'a combination of alleged bullying and misogynistic behaviour by a number of contestants'. Love Island airs at 9pm on ITV2 every day except Saturday. View More » Metro has reached out to ITV for comment. Got a story?
