Half a million march to Downing Street to urge Starmer to cut ties with Israel
The demonstration began at Embankment before passing Big Ben, crossing the river to Waterloo and ending up outside Downing Street.
It was organised by the Palestine Solidarity Compaign, Friends of Al-Aqsa, the Muslim Association of Britain, Stop the War, the Palestinian Forum in Britain and other pro-Palestine groups.
Protesters came from around the country, including from Wales and northern England. Stop the War said the demonstration was attended by an estimated 600,000 people, making it the biggest since November 2023.

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign said the march was intended to "mark the 77th anniversary of the 1948 Nakba and demand our government take action to end the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their land".
The Nakba, or catastrophe, refers to the ethnic cleansing of Palestine by Zionist militias to make way for the creation of Israel in 1948.
Small counter-protest
A small contingent of pro-Israel protestors stood on the Strand at the north end of Waterloo Bridge, chanting: "Terror supporters off our streets". Indian flags were seen being waved alongside Israeli flags.
Outside Downing Street, the pro-Palestine marchers heard from several speakers, including MP Apsana Begum, Palestinian ambassador Hussam Zumlot and historian William Dalrymple.

Saturday's protest came as Israel continues its blockade on Gaza, now on day 77. Bombings have increased in the past week and the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 53,000 since 7 October 2023.
During the Nakba in 1948, Zionist forces killed thousands of Palestinians, destroyed hundreds of villages and forcibly expelled 80 percent of the Palestinian population from their homeland.
After more than a year of relentless violence, the newly created State of Israel captured 78 percent of historic Palestine.
The remaining 22 percent, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, were occupied by Israel 19 years later and remain under Israeli military rule.

UAE launches first 'Youth Social Mission' to begin support for Gaza
The Federal Youth Authority has announced the launch of the first group of participants in the 'Youth Social Missions Programme' to take part in Operation Chivalrous Knight 3 in Al Arish, Egypt as part of the UAE's ongoing contribution for the Palestinian people. Within the 'Humanity' track, the first group was inaugurated in the presence of Dr. Sultan Saif Al Neyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, coinciding with World Humanitarian Day on Tuesday. The minister met the participating youth in the field, commending their high spirit and readiness to contribute to humanitarian efforts representing the UAE in one of the world's most crisis-affected regions. Speaking in Al Arish, Al Neyadi highlighted the Youth Social Missions Programme's aim in preparing the Emirati youth to provide sustainable humanitarian support worldwide while representing the UAE's values. The first group's field tasks include preparing relief shipments, packaging and distributing food, medical and water supplies, supporting logistics teams, and following up on the UAE Lifeline pipeline that delivers water to around 600,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Their operations also include providing psychosocial support, and contributing to direct relief efforts in coordination with official entities engaged in the humanitarian operation in Gaza. The initiative aims to develop the skills of Emirati youth, broaden their awareness of global issues and growing humanitarian needs, and open avenues for participation in international initiatives that support the Sustainable Development Goals and reinforce the UAE's role as a leader in humanitarian action. The Youth Social Missions Programme is one of the flagship national initiatives launched by the Federal Youth Authority under the 'Society and Values' pillar of the National Youth Agenda 2031. It aims to prepare Emirati youth to participate in humanitarian, development and cultural missions, thereby enhancing the UAE's global presence and training a new generation of ambassadors for humanitarian work.

Israel demands release of all 50 Gaza hostages, Israeli broadcaster says
Israel is demanding the release of all 50 hostages held in Gaza, Israeli public broadcaster Kan cited the prime minister's office as saying on Tuesday, as talks on a proposed deal envisaging a 60-day truce and release of half the hostages continue. Efforts to pause the fighting gained new momentum over the past week after Israel announced plans for a new offensive to seize control of Gaza City, and Egypt and Qatar have been pushing to restart indirect talks between the sides on a US-backed ceasefire plan. The deal is nearly identical to a proposal Washington put forward earlier this year, a spokesperson for mediator Qatar said on Tuesday. Hamas rejected that deal in July. Under the deal, ten Israeli hostages held in Gaza will be returned along with the bodies of 18 others, spread out over 60 days. Israel says that of 50 hostages held by Hamas and its allies, 20 are believed to be alive. In exchange, Israel will release 150 detained Palestinians it sentenced to life in prison and 50 Palestinians it sentenced to more than 15 years. For each body Hamas returns, Israel will return the bodies of 10 Palestinian militants. Israel will permit aid to enter Gaza with the involvement of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The proposal includes the release of 200 Palestinian convicts jailed in Israel and an unspecified number of imprisoned women and minors, in return for 10 living and 18 deceased hostages from Gaza, according to a Hamas official. Two Egyptian security sources confirmed the details, and added that Hamas has requested the release of hundreds of Gaza detainees as well. The proposal includes a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces, which presently control 75 per cent of Gaza and the entry of more humanitarian aid into the enclave, where a population of 2.2 million people is increasingly facing famine. The last round of indirect talks between the sides ended in deadlock in July, with the sides trading blame for the collapse. Israel had previously agreed to the outline, advanced by US special Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, but negotiations faltered over some of its details.
