Derrick Lewis unleashes his beast mode on Tallison Teixeira

The Hindu6 days ago
The Bridgestone Arena erupted on a thrilling fight night as Derrick 'The Black Beast' Lewis delivered a lightning-fast knockout, solidifying his legendary status in the Ultimate Fighting Championship's heavyweight division. In a highly anticipated main event, Lewis swiftly dispatched Tallison Teixeira in merely 35 seconds of the opening round, further cementing his record for the most knockouts (16) in UFC history.
From the opening bell, Lewis demonstrated his signature power. Despite a brief moment where Teixeira managed to land a shot, Lewis quickly recovered and unleashed a devastating left hand that sent his opponent crashing to the canvas.
The referee wasted no time in stopping the contest, ensuring Teixeira's safety and marking a decisive victory for Lewis. This impressive performance secured back-to-back wins for Lewis against promising Brazilian contenders, highlighting his continued dominance and unwavering power inside the octagon.
Beyond the Beast
The night's excitement wasn't limited to the main event. The co-main event saw a closely contested battle where Gabriel Bonfim edged out Stephen Thompson, the oldest active fighter in the promotion, via split decision.
Thompson and Bonfim followed an action-packed main card, which saw three consecutive bouts end via finish, before Steve Garcia extended his winning run to six fights with a unanimous decision over Calvin Kattar. The opening few minutes of the fight saw both fighters exchanging leg kicks, but Bonfim's shots did most of the damage. The Brazilian then initiated a successful takedown, which rattled Thompson, but he was able to get back on his feet eventually. With the crowd backing homeboy Thompson to the fullest, Bonfim attempted multiple takedowns but found little success.
Bonfim, in the final round, was able to dominate towards the end as he pinned Thompson along the fence. The 27-year-old's efforts were enough to get the nod from two out of the three judges and take a split decision for his third straight victory.
The Reaper is back!
The UFC is set to deliver a highly anticipated middleweight clash as Robert Whittaker prepares to face the surging Reinier de Ridder in the main event of UFC Abu Dhabi on July 26 at the Etihad Arena.
Robert Whittaker, a former UFC Middleweight Champion, will step back into the octagon looking to reassert his dominance.
His opponent, Reinier de Ridder, a decorated former two-division ONE Championship titleholder, has made an impressive splash in the UFC, accumulating an undefeated record since his debut last year.
De Ridder's recent victory over Bo Nickal has further elevated his stock, making him a formidable challenge for 'The Reaper'. The match-up promises a compelling clash of styles, with Whittaker's precise striking facing de Ridder's grappling skills — potentially shaping the future of the middleweight division.

Liverpool Eyeing Rodrygo Amid Uncertainty Over Luis Diaz's Future

Last Updated: Diaz has courted interest from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, and the Merseyside club look at the Brazilian as a potential replacement if the Colombian opts to leave. Premier League champions Liverpool are reportedly interested in bringing in Real Madrid forward Rodrygo if Colombian winger Luis Diaz opts to explore pastures anew in the upcoming season. Diaz has courted interest from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, and the Merseyside club look at the Brazilian as a potential replacement. Rodrygo has found regular playing time hard to come by since the arrival of French World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe to the Spanish Capital City club and could look for a new challenge, possibly in England. Diaz has opened the doors for a Bundesliga switch as he reportedly asked Liverpool to consider incoming offers from the Bavarian giants in the case that the Reds were not ready to upgrade his existing contract with better terms. Liverpool have already strengthened their lineup ahead of the upcoming season with the signings of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili. Arne Slot and Co. shattered the British transfer record in order to rope in German starboy Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a whooping £135m after having completed the signing of Frimpong from the same side couple of weeks earlier in their attempt to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made the switch to Real Madrid. Liverpool also signed Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia and Freddie Woodman on a free transfer from Preston North End. Real Madrid went trophyless in Carlo Ancelotti's final season as the boss of Los Blancos, and will look to remedy that in new boss Xabi Alonso's debut season at the Capital City side. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 12:21 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Khabib Nurmagomedov Points to Jack Della Maddalena's Size Advantage Over Islam Makhachev Amid UFC Rule Change Push

Images via Imagn: Islam Makhachev, Jack Della Maddalena and Khabib Nurmagomedov With Ilia Topuria winning the UFC's 155-pound crown and Islam Makhachev slated to fight for the welterweight title later this year, the future of the promotion is certainly looking bright. However, many fans were dismayed at the fact that they didn't get to see the two best fighters in the promotion settle their feud inside the Octagon. Moreover, experts even cited that the Dagestani would make easy work of fighters at 170lbs, which included the reigning champion, Jack Della Maddalena. However, UFC Hall of Famer and Makhachev's mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, has other thoughts. Khabib Nurmagomedov Believes Jack Della Maddalena to Be the Toughest Challenge of Islam Makhachev's Career In a recent interview with Adam Zubayraev on the Hustle Show, Nurmagomedov said that JDM would be a much tougher opponent for Makhachev than Topuria. 'I think Maddalena is the toughest opponent in Islam's career. That's my opinion, not Charles, no one else. None of those other fighters. Not even Ilia, if that fight were to happen. That's just my personal opinion.' The Hall of Famer cited JDM's size and strength as the reason for his analysis and added, 'First of all, Maddalena is twice the size of Ilia. Taller, bigger, stronger legs, bigger frame. His boxing is just as good. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Things You Should Stop Wearing After 40 Undo And, in grappling, he scrambles really well if you've watched him. For me, if I was preparing Islam for either Ilia or Maddalena, I'd be more concerned about Maddalena (than Ilia).' With Dana White announcing the headliners for UFC 320 and UFC 321, it is possible that JDM and Makhachev would slug it out for the 170-pound gold at UFC 322 in November at Madison Square Garden. Khabib Nurmagomedov Suggests a Big Change in the Current UFC Fight Rule Book The UFC's standard rules in 2025 still follow the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, first introduced back in 2001. These rules were brought in to help legitimize the sport, moving it away from its early reputation as "human cockfighting" during the late 1990s. With the new framework came time limits, judges, weight classes, and the 10-point must scoring system, all aimed at making MMA more professional and mainstream. However, Khabib Nurmagomedov is now suggesting some major changes to these long-standing rules. He now mentors top talents like Makhachev and Umar Nurmagomedov, guiding them toward championship success. With his wealth of experience, Khabib believes it's time for a rule overhaul. In the same interview with Zubayraev, Khabib shared a bold idea: 'I'd change the rules. Like, you step into the Octagon – regular fights are 15 minutes, title fights are 25, right? I'd say no rounds. No rounds at all. I always wondered – what's the point of rounds? What's the point of it all? It's for entertainment, they pause for ads and all of that.' The UFC Hall of Famer believes the current round-based format prioritizes business and television over the purity of sport. He argued that eliminating rounds would make fights more authentic and less driven by commercial breaks. 'I get it – it's for business. But if we're talking sport, I'd get rid of rounds, no rounds at all. They just step in – that's it. There should be rules, no strikes to the back of the head, no groin strikes, that sort of thing, yeah, but I'd still get rid of rounds.'
