Texans QB C.J. Stroud dealing with a 'minor shoulder muscle' issue at OTAs
C.J. Stroud hasn't practiced since the start of organized team activities, and now fans have a better understanding of why.
According to KPRC 2 Sports' Aaron Wilson, Stroud is dealing with a minor shoulder muscle issue. The injury isn't regarded as a long-term issue and it is expected that Stroud could return to increased activity at practice as soon as next week.
Since OTAs are a more relaxed feel than training camp in August, the Texans are taking caution with the former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year as he begins to prep for a breakout third season. With Stroud sidelined, backup quarterback Davis Mills has seen most of the reps with the first- and second-team while Kedon Slovis has worked with the third-team.
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans downplayed Stroud's activity level on Wednesday and emphasized players' routines will vary widely day to day. First-year offensive coordinator Nick Caley addressed the former No. 2 overall pick's absence, but also mentioned he wasn't concerned with the limitations during drills.
'He's locked in every step of the way,' Caley said Friday afternoon. 'No concerns whatsoever. I know DeMeco has already hit on this. Everybody has a specific routine relative to their own routine, specific to whatever. Whether it's football, whether it's athletic training, etc., he's doing a great job and he's out here and he's working.'
After a sophomore slump, Stroud enters Year 3 with a chance to cash in. He's up for a new deal this offseason and could become one of the league's highest-paid passers with a promising campaign.
The former Ohio State Heisman runner-up is being tasked with more responsibility and trust to orchestrate the Texans' offense under Caley. He'll be allowed to maked adjustments before the snap and change the play call or audible a new protection scheme with Caley calling the shots.
'It's like anything else,' Caley said. 'The more you can do, the better off you're going to end up being. He wants to have the ability to be able to have control. When you're at that position there is a lot of great value in being able to fix problems that come up or unscouted looks that come up."
The Texans return for OTA workouts on Tuesday at the Methodist Training Center.

Texans listed as potential trade candidate for Dolphins All-Pro WR Tyreek Hill While the Houston Texans like their current status of receivers behind Pro Bowler Nico Collins, that hasn't stopped some speculation about a potential trade for one of the best wideouts in the league. Stefon Diggs' departure and Tank Dell's injury have left questions for a No. 2 target in new coordinator Nick Caley's system. One name rumored to be on the move is Miami Dolphins All-Pro Tyreek Hill. Dolphins GM Chris Grier has not ruled out a trade since it was brought up back in April. With the June 1 deadline gone, it would make it a lot easier for Miami to get it done as far as spreading out the salary cap over the next two years. 'If someone wants to come and give me two first round picks then we'd consider it,' Grier said. 'But, as of right now, it's not something we're considering.' Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio discussed some potential suitors for Hill, including the Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Chargers and San Francisco 49ers. Florio even mentioned the Texans as a potential suitor for Hill -- with the caveat of sending a veteran receiver back to Miami in the process. "Maybe, in the end, Hill's recent effort to fix his image isn't about persuading the Dolphins to keep him," Florio wrote. "Maybe he's hoping it will convince a better team to come get him." While the Texans should always be looking to improve the roster, Hill doesn't feel like the best fit for a Ryans-led team. Hill, 31, is coming off one of his worst statistical seasons where he failed to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards, but his persona on social media isn't an ideal fit for the team's culture. The Texans aren't in win-now mode heading into Year 3 of the Ryans' era, so what's the asking price to land Hill? Houston gave up a second-round pick last season for Stefon Diggs, who had shown signs of regression late in 2023. He was limited to eight games and suffered a season-ending torn ACL. The Texans open the season against the Los Angeles Rams.

Former Ohio State Buckeye standout Justin Fields inked a two-year, $40 million contract with the Jets this offseason to make the jump from the Pittsburgh Steelers, a move that reunites the athletic QB with his former college teammate and Jets star Garrett Wilson. That is one reason for some optimism here. But ... Fields was never able to put it all together with the Chicago Bears, who selected him with the No. 11 overall pick in 2021. He was dumped to the Steelers a year ago, and Fields experienced something of a reclamation year in Pittsburgh, going 4-2 as a starter before Russell Wilson became healthy enough to reclaim the starting spot. If Fields can excel as the Jets' starting quarterback, it'd be a steal of a contract for the Jets. With just a $20 million salary, Fields will be one of the lowest-paid veteran starting quarterbacks in the NFL. And it would be "great'' for that to pay off.
