Texans QB C.J. Stroud dealing with a 'minor shoulder muscle' issue at OTAs

Texans QB C.J. Stroud dealing with a 'minor shoulder muscle' issue at OTAs C.J. Stroud hasn't practiced since the start of organized team activities, and now fans have a better understanding of why. According to KPRC 2 Sports' Aaron Wilson, Stroud is dealing with a minor shoulder muscle issue. The injury isn't regarded as a long-term issue and it is expected that Stroud could return to increased activity at practice as soon as next week. Since OTAs are a more relaxed feel than training camp in August, the Texans are taking caution with the former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year as he begins to prep for a breakout third season. With Stroud sidelined, backup quarterback Davis Mills has seen most of the reps with the first- and second-team while Kedon Slovis has worked with the third-team. Texans coach DeMeco Ryans downplayed Stroud's activity level on Wednesday and emphasized players' routines will vary widely day to day. First-year offensive coordinator Nick Caley addressed the former No. 2 overall pick's absence, but also mentioned he wasn't concerned with the limitations during drills. 'He's locked in every step of the way,' Caley said Friday afternoon. 'No concerns whatsoever. I know DeMeco has already hit on this. Everybody has a specific routine relative to their own routine, specific to whatever. Whether it's football, whether it's athletic training, etc., he's doing a great job and he's out here and he's working.' After a sophomore slump, Stroud enters Year 3 with a chance to cash in. He's up for a new deal this offseason and could become one of the league's highest-paid passers with a promising campaign. The former Ohio State Heisman runner-up is being tasked with more responsibility and trust to orchestrate the Texans' offense under Caley. He'll be allowed to maked adjustments before the snap and change the play call or audible a new protection scheme with Caley calling the shots. 'It's like anything else,' Caley said. 'The more you can do, the better off you're going to end up being. He wants to have the ability to be able to have control. When you're at that position there is a lot of great value in being able to fix problems that come up or unscouted looks that come up." The Texans return for OTA workouts on Tuesday at the Methodist Training Center.

2025 NFL schedule: Commanders set for 8 standalone games

May 15 - Some oddities, notable facts and trends from the NFL's schedule release on Wednesday: Prepare for the Jayden Daniels show The Washington Commanders are must-see TV these days with NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year quarterback Jayden Daniels at the helm, one year after they finished 12-5 and made it an unlikely march to the NFC Championship Game. After years of few spotlight games nationally, the Commanders are slated for eight standalone games in 2025, tying the Kansas City Chiefs for the most. Five of those games are in primetime. This included a Christmas Day matchup vs. the NFC East-rival Cowboys on Netflix. They also play their first international since 2016, facing the Dolphins in Madrid, Spain, in Nov. 16. Browns open vs. Bengals, no primetime games It has been a hard -- and much talked-about -- fall for the Cleveland Browns, who begin the season at home against the in-state rival Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7. The Browns will play all of their games this year in the daytime. Vikings' J.J. McCarthy to make first start vs. Bears Second-year QB J.J. McCarthy, who is expected to return from a meniscus tear to start for the Minnesota Vikings this season, will open the regular season with a Monday night road matchup against the NFC Central-rival Chicago Bears. McCarthy was taken by the Vikings out of Michigan with the 10th pick of the 2024 draft. He sustained a right knee injury last August and missed the entire season. Cowboys full of Thursday games The Dallas Cowboys will play an NFL-high four games on Thursday night this season, including three of them over a five-week stretch. And the opponents for those games are no slouches: Week 13 -- Kansas City Chiefs; Week 14 -- Detroit Lions; Week 17 -- Washington Commanders. The Cowboys are coming off a season in which they went a disappointing 7-10. Jets no longer primetime-worthy Following a disappointing 5-12 season in 2024 and the departures of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams, among others, the New York Jets are headed toward relative anonymity once again. With Rodgers at the helm, they were among the leaders in primetime or standalone games, but in 2025, they are scheduled for just two of them. Thirteen of their games are slated to be in the early (1 p.m. ET) Sunday slot. That should allow the team to "move in silence," which has been new head coach Aaron Glenn's stated goal. Eagles, Cowboys square off on TNF in Week 1 The reigning Super Bowl champs, the Philadelphia Eagles, will open the season on Thursday, Sept. 4, at home vs. the Cowboys, their bitter NFC East rivals. Chargers, Chiefs play in Sao Paulo in Week 1 The Chargers will head to Brazil to play the Chiefs for a Friday night game on Sept. 5. That kicks off a international schedule that includes seven regular-season games. After the Brazil matchup, these are the international games: Sunday, Sept. 28: Vikings-Steelers in Dublin Sunday, Oct. 5: Vikings-Browns in London Sunday, Oct. 12: Broncos-Jets in London Sunday, Oct. 19: Rams-Jaguars in London Sunday, Nov. 9: Falcons-Colts in Berlin Sunday, Nov. 16: Commanders-Dolphins in Madrid --Field Level Media

Jayden Daniels' mom sets record straight on Commanders QB's dating life

Regina Jackson, the mother, agent and business manager of Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, has made it no secret that she's looking out for him on and off of the field. During a Sunday appearance on the Mother's Day edition of 'The Pivot' podcast, Jackson opened up about Daniels' dating life and explained why she is protecting the 24-year-old from from other women. 'The whole girls comment was made first of all two years [ago], when he was at LSU,' Jackson told co-hosts Ryan Clark and Fred Taylor, referring to a past interview during which she said her biggest fear was 'them girls' trying to get to her son. 'It was a question [I was] asked, 'What is your biggest fear?' 'That should be every parents' biggest fear… men and women… because you're a public figure and your dollar amount is associated with your name. So you never know who's really there for you and who's really against you. '… The thing is, he doesn't know what he doesn't know and he knows football and he does it very well… but he doesn't know the business world,' she said. He doesn't know the predators or he vultures that could be out there. So he feels very comfortable in knowing that not only am I educated and qualified to do it, I'm also his mom.' 3 Jayden Daniels and his mother Regina Jackson at the 14th Annual NFL Honors Awards at Saenger Theatre, New Orleans, Louisiana on February 6, 2025. Darren Agboh/Picture Group for Fox Sports/Shutterstock Jackson explained that she wants her son to date despite narratives that she's shielding him from it. 'I'm putting it on record. My son can date, he can live freely, make his own decisions,' she said. 'However, with the relationship we have, he does value my opinion because when my kids were little, I did a lot for them and my kids saw that. '… I worked too hard to allow anybody and at any moment to come in and just take it away. So I have a view of what I feel a good person is. But my son is 24, and he does have to go through things and he has to learn on his own. He's a great kid, I'm thankful for him… He's not like some of these other guys. He's really to himself, a homebody… So I'm trying to work on his life after sports, because at some point it does end.' Jackson is a certified agent and has Master's degrees in Hospital Administration and in entrepreneurial business. 3 Regina Jackson, the mother, agent and business manager of Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels explained why she's so diligent about protecting him against other women during an appearance on 'The Pivot' podcast on May 11, 2025. YouTube/The Pivot Jackson went on 'The Pivot' to give the public an opportunity to 'actually get to know who I am.' She emphasized that she wants to be known as Regina Jackson, 'and not always the mother of Jayden Daniels.' 'I had Jayden. Jayden didn't have me,' she quipped of the reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. 3 Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels stiff arms Micah McFadden #41 of the New York Giants while running the ball during the second quarter of a game in East Rutherford, N.J. on November 3, 2024. Bill Kostroun/New York Post Jackson went viral for seemingly hovering over Daniels on numerous occasions off of the field. Many were convinced that she tagged along with Daniels on a date with an unnamed woman while in Miami for the Formula 1 races last weekend. Last month, Jackson was spotted in the background of a video of Daniels dancing at the wedding of San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and his longtime partner Rochelle Searight. In March, Jackson made waves online when she sat between him and USC Trojans women's basketball star JuJu Watkins in the stands at the NCAA tournament. Daniels discussed how his mother is protective over him. 'Nothing gets past my mama,' he said during an interview with Boardroom in December 2024. 'She reads people, she doesn't want to put people around me that she doesn't feel will benefit me.'

Seahawks Rookie Quarterback Using Virtual Reality Headset to Up His Game

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Jalen Milroe plans to use a virtual reality headset to practice. The Seahawks third-round draft pick is spending his rookie season working on his fundamentals to become a better passer, including using a VR headset to go through his progressions and pocket presence. Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, the 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, used VR to aid in his development last season. In the meantime, the Seahawks have expressed interest in getting the young signal-caller on the field as quickly as possible. 'My new head coach [Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald], we talked about [using a VR headset],' Milroe said in an interview with local sports news outlet Daniels has been a case study in using VR to develop his mental processing. According to an October report in 'It moves faster within the VR than actual human beings,' Daniels told The Athletic. 'Once you get out there, everything slows down. I know this is coming. I've seen this before, [and] it moved more than 20 times faster in VR.' Besides the VR headset, Milroe has been working on his throwing mechanics. Seattle Sports reported that he has been working with former NFL quarterback turned quarterback coach Jordan Palmer. Palmer has Related Stories 3/19/2025 3/6/2025 'The biggest thing is everything works from the ground up at the quarterback position,' Milroe told the outlet. 'It's understanding the lower-half mechanics of how I operate. Every quarterback is different, and so … it's understanding how to distribute my body when it comes to the lower-half mechanics. That's been a focus for us.' 'It's all about being an efficient passer,' he added. 'And so the more you work, the more you understand your body, you're going to be more of an efficient passer. So that's something that we continue to work on.' Milroe enters a situation where he will not have to start right away. Seattle signed veteran free agent Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract, but according to Milroe emerged as a dual-threat quarterback at Alabama. He finished his college career with 6,016 passing yards and 45 touchdowns with 20 interceptions. He added 1,577 rushing yards and 33 TDs on the ground. Thanks to his prolific rushing, blazing fast 4.4 40-yard dash, and Realizing this potential, the Seahawks have plans to get Milroe on the field as soon as possible. 'We just added an explosive weapon while he develops as a quarterback,' general manager John Schneider said in a But Macdonald was quick to shut down comparisons to New Orleans Saints utility player Taysom Hill, who had similar size, speed and success as a runner coming out of college. Hill entered the league as a quarterback, but is currently listed as a tight end and has been used as a running back, receiver, fullback, special teamer, and passer in his time in New Orleans. 'Taysom is such a great player, and the way they used him was more of, like, in a tight end-fullback hybrid role, sometimes taking snaps,' he said. 'Jalen's a quarterback through and through. He's going to be trained to play quarterback for us, and when he's in there, he's going to be playing quarterback, but the athleticism is going to come to life when he's on the field, and that's how he's going to help us.'

Tyler Shough's Rookie of the Year odds are on the move after Derek Carr's retirement

Tyler Shough's Rookie of the Year odds are on the move after Derek Carr's retirement Tyler Shough was a good sleeper pick to win the 2025 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award before we knew Derek Carr wouldn't be in his way. With Saturday's stunning news that Carr is retiring, though, Shough is more than a sleeper, he's a bonafide Rookie of the Year candidate. His rising odds reflect his improved candidacy, as Shough's only current competition for the New Orleans Saints starting quarterback job is Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener -- recent draft picks without much more experience than Shough. At BetMGM, Shough's odds have moved from +2000 to +1500 to win Rookie of the Year, which remains sixth-best and second among quarterbacks behind Cam Ward at +250. The movement was similar at other books.
