Baby in Melaka abuse case alive and well, say cops
Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar contrary to claims on messaging apps, the baby is conscious, able to drink milk normally and is in stable condition under the care of specialists at Melaka Hospital.
"Claims that the baby has died are false. The baby boy may also be moved from the paediatric intensive care unit to a regular ward today, depending on the doctor's report.
"The baby has also been placed under the supervision of the Alor Gajah Social Welfare Department," he told reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the Melaka Contingent Basic Light Strike Force (LSF) Course Series 1/2025 at the Melaka police headquarters on Friday (May 9).
Dzulkhairi said the investigation is almost complete and will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor, with a proposed charge under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
He advised the public to be more responsible and not disseminate false information.
On Wednesday (May 7), the media reported that a couple, both aged 22, were remanded for seven days on suspicion of abusing their baby in Taman Seri Pelangi, Alor Gajah.
Preliminary investigations found that the baby's mother initially claimed that her child had experienced seizures and lost consciousness when seeking treatment at the Alor Gajah Hospital, but the case was later referred to Melaka Hospital.
Medical specialists at Melaka Hospital suspected abuse and lodged a police report after examinations, including a CT scan, revealed both recent and past injuries to the baby's head, along with bruises and wounds on the body and neck. – Bernama

Cabbie jailed for injuring adopted daughter
SEREMBAN: A 46-year-old taxi driver was sentenced to three months' jail and fined RM10,000 after pleading guilty to using a belt to strangle his 14-year-old adopted daughter, causing injuries to her neck. The accused pleaded guilty to the charge in the Sessions Court here before judge N. Kanageswari. He committed the offence at about 2pm on Sept 15, 2024, at his rented house in Bandar Seremban Selatan. He was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years, a fine of up to RM50,000 or both, upon conviction. In mitigation, defence lawyer Shah Wira Abdul Halim pleaded for leniency, saying the accused had saved the court's time by admitting guilt. 'A lengthy trial has been avoided with the accused, who is also a first-time offender, pleading guilty. He may have acted out of frustration as the victim ignored his advice to reduce excessive social media use,' he said. Shah Wira added that the accused, who suffers from a physical disability and earns about RM1,500 a month, is the sole provider for his ailing mother, wife and another nine-year-old adopted child. 'A lengthy custodial sentence would cause hardship to his mother, who relies heavily on him,' he said, adding that the accused was remorseful and wished to turn over a new leaf. Deputy public prosecutor Siti Khairiah Abdul Razak urged the court to impose a sentence reflecting the seriousness of the crime. 'In such cases, public interest must take precedence over personal interest. As a guardian, the accused should never have injured the child, even in the name of discipline,' she said. Kanageswari also ordered the accused to serve an additional six months in jail if he failed to pay the fine. He was further ordered to enter into a RM3,000 good behaviour bond for one year and to complete 36 hours of community service within six months.

Siblings drown in unfenced construction pond site in Ipoh
IPOH: Two siblings were found drowned in a water retention pond located within an unfenced construction site in Lebuh Perindustrian Sin Yong Seng, Taman Chemor Ria, here yesterday. The boys, aged eight and nine, had reportedly gone out to play near their rented home, which is adjacent to the construction area, before the tragedy occurred. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said authorities received an emergency call via MERS 999 at 8.33pm yesterday. He said initial information indicated that members of the public had discovered two unconscious children in the pond. "Both victims were immediately rushed to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) for emergency treatment, but were unfortunately pronounced dead at 9.39pm on the same night," he said when contacted tonight. He added that an initial investigation at the scene revealed the construction site was not secured with fencing, and no warning signage was displayed to alert the public of potential hazards. "A post-mortem conducted at HRPB's forensic unit confirmed that the cause of death was drowning," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 33 of the Child Act 2001, which pertains to child negligence and is punishable by a fine of up to RM20,000, a jail term of up to five years, or both. He advised the public to always prioritise children's safety, especially when near high-risk areas such as rivers, ponds, mining pools, or construction sites. "Developers and contractors are also reminded to comply with safety regulations, including installing fencing and warning signs at construction sites to prevent unwanted incidents. "Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact the investigating officer, Inspector P. Munesuwari, at 016-5921325, or reach out to any nearby police station," he said.

Taxi driver jailed 3 months, fined RM10,000 for choking daughter with belt
SEREMBAN: A taxi driver was sentenced to three months in prison and fined RM10,000 at the Seremban Sessions Court today after pleading guilty to choking his adopted 14-year-old daughter with a belt last year. Judge N. Kanageswari handed down the sentence to 46-year-old Salim Abdullah, taking into account his guilty plea as well as submissions from both the prosecution and defence. The prison term begins today, and if the fine is not paid, Salim will serve an additional six months in jail. He was also placed on a good behaviour bond with a RM3,000 surety from a family member and ordered to complete 36 hours of community service within six months after his release. According to the charge, Salim, as the guardian of the teenage victim, had physically abused her by choking her neck with a belt, causing bodily injury. The offence occurred around 2pm on Sept 15 last year at a home in Bandar Seremban Selatan. He was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum fine of RM20,000, imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both. Case facts indicate that Salim had previously poured hot water on the victim's back and later choked her with a belt before she ran to a neighbour's house and was taken to hospital for treatment. The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Khairiah Abdul Razak, while the defence was represented by lawyer Shah Wira Abdul Halim. Shah Wira stated that the accused is a physically disabled (OKU) taxi driver earning RM1,500 a month, supporting his wife and two adopted children, including the victim. He added that Salim suffers from diabetes, regrets his actions, and apologised, explaining that his intention was to discipline the child, who spent excessive time on social media.
