Hard Rock hiring, contracting event set for April

Yahoo11-02-2025

The initial phase of construction probably won't finish until December, but hiring has already begun — and vendor contracting is next — at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tejon in Mettler.
The casino's president told a meeting of the Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's Government Relations Committee that an event has been scheduled for April 4 and 5 at Bakersfield College where people will be able to speak with Hard Rock representatives about opportunities to work with the company or directly for it.
But even before that, President Chris Kelley said, Hard Rock is hiring senior executives in the areas of finance, food and beverage, gaming operations, human resources, marketing, security and surveillance, compliance, facilities and purchasing.
Kelley said he made offers to candidates in three of those positions Sunday "but there will be many, many more."
"Ultimately it takes a village to build a project like this," he said.
At the event in April, Kelley said, the company plans to speak with people interested in working in cash operations, food and beverage, entertainment, executive and administration, finance, hotel operations, HR and information technology. He said the company looks for people with a positive attitude and a passion for entertaining who are also team players, energetic, trustworthy, reliable, diverse and flexible.
Hard Rock is also looking to hire card dealers and other personnel who will guide players through the gaming side of the operation. Kelley said successful candidates will go through a training course lasting six to 12 weeks. They will learn how to deal games including blackjack, craps and roulette, Kelley said.
The plan is to hire 1,000 people before the casino opens its first phase.
The casino also hopes to work with a variety of local service providers, including landscapers. Kelley did not provide a list of opportunities but invited contractors to speak with Hard Rock representatives at the event in April, details of which have not yet been announced. Companies may contact him to discuss the casino's needs in the meantime, he said, though he did not provide contact information.
Hard Rock is a well-known brand with a "DEI" strategy that emphasizes diversity, equity and inclusion, he said. The casino wants employees to get involved, feel a sense of purpose and gain a sense of connection, he added.
The first phase of the casino, planned to open by the end of this year, will include a casino floor measuring more than 100,000 square feet with more than 2,500 slot machines and at least 50 gaming tables. It will also come with several restaurants.
The second phase is planned to add a 400-room hotel and a 2,800-seat Hard Rock Live events venue, as well as additional dining, a pool, a spa and other amenities. Company representatives said in September the plan was to open that phase in late summer 2027.
But on Monday, Kelley responded to a question about the specific timing by saying, "We'll see." He went on to say his "highest priority is making sure we open with the best facility we can." After that Hard Rock will focus on next steps, he said.
Kelley opened his presentation by comparing Sunday's Super Bowl with the kind of experiences the hospitality industry tries to create.
"That common experience creates a sense of connection, creates a sense of engagement," he said. "It gives us a bridge to each other in ways that we don't often see throughout the year."
The casino will be a place guests can come and enjoy together while they celebration job promotions, birthdays and other special events, Kelley said.
"It's also an opportunity to build a career that can take you to some of the most amazing places," he added.

Amazon deliveries halted in some rural areas

GLENBORO — A local entrepreneur is concerned about the vulnerability of small towns after his Amazon deliveries were halted due to labour uncertainty at Canada Post. Liam Kelley, owner of Kelley Laser Engraving Services, told the Sun Thursday that for three weeks, deliveries to his business from Amazon have been disabled unexpectedly. The businessman said the stoppage causes him to worry that small communities are at risk of being stripped of services they depend on. 'Having a service like that, that just goes mysteriously dark … it's a little scary,' Kelley told the Sun. 'At any moment, something we rely on can be cut off.' Glenboro Mayor Charles Radford confirmed to the Sun that he has also seen Amazon deliveries stop. For his business, Kelley orders bulk quantities of small items like magnets and coasters through Amazon. An order to his home was cancelled three weeks ago, and then followup orders were frozen, and his address is now treated as invalid when he inputs it for delivery options. In an email to the Sun, a spokesperson for Amazon confirmed that there are new issues with delivery to some areas in Canada. 'Amazon is temporarily unable to ship to addresses that are uniquely served by Canada Post, because we are currently unable to guarantee delivery times,' the spokesperson wrote. 'This includes PO boxes, and pickup points and communities that are only serviced by Canada Post.' The spokesperson encouraged customers to switch to delivery provided by alternative carriers, or to use a nearby Amazon Counter pickup point. The stoppage demonstrates how Glenboro and other small communities are vulnerable, Kelley said. 'It's kind of a town issue. It's a thing that puts the town's survival in jeopardy,' he said. Glenboro had a population of 544 people in the most recent census, in 2021. Kelley said he believes that small communities need to work on being more self-reliant, such as by manufacturing things locally. 'God help us if we lose Canada Post.' Kelley said he now can't obtain certain items that he planned to engrave. He travels the one-hour drive to Brandon to search for materials, but some items are not available, especially in bulk quantities, he said In the Canada Post dispute, developments continued Thursday in the effort to secure a contract between the Crown corporation and unionized workers. The federal government asked union employees to vote directly on the latest offers that the postal service made. Federal Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu announced in a social media post that she's using her powers under the Canada Labour Code to send the Crown corporation's latest offers to Canadian Union of Postal Workers members for a vote. The Canada Industrial Relations Board will be directed to conduct the vote 'as soon as possible,' she said. Canada Post spokesperson Lisa Liu said the corporation welcomes the vote. Hajdu said it's in the 'public interest' to give the roughly 55,000 CUPW members an opportunity to vote on the offers, which Canada Post has said are its 'final' proposals. Error! NYC Mayor Eric Adams helps save Trump-linked Bally's casino bid with show of support

Mayor Eric Adams put his chips on the table for Bally's. The City Council voted to advance legislation Wednesday that would allow gaming operator Bally's to convert part of President Trump's former Bronx golf course into a casino — after the mayor intervened to help secure its passage. The proposal — referred to as a home rule message — requires 34 votes from the council for passage without the mayor's backing. But only 26 votes are needed — a simple majority, if the mayor declares his support. At the 11th hour on Wednesday, Adams issued a formal message of support to the council, and the measure passed 32-12, with seven abstaining. It means the bill can now be take up by the state Legislature. If approved, it would allow the golf course property, currently designated as state parkland, to be repurposed as a casino complex. Bally's will then be able to submit a bid for one of three covered downstate state casino licenses later this month. The firm hopes to build a 500,000-square-foot casino on the Bronx site by its golf course — now called Bally's Golf Links at Ferry Point — along with a 500-room hotel with a spa and meeting space, retail shops, a 2,000-seat event center and two parking garages with capacity for up to 4,660 vehicles. The City Council and Albany lawmakers recently approved such land use legislation allowing Mets owner Steve Cohen and Hard Rock to repurpose some of the lots around Citi Field for a casino complex. Cohen's bill got little to no resistance from the council — but Bally's, with its Trump connection, did. As part of the deal to acquire the golf course at Ferry Point in 2023, Bally's agreed to provide the Trump Organization an additional $115 million if it wins a casino license. As The Post previously reported, a council vote on Bally's proposal was postponed two weeks ago — provoking criticism from its CEO Soo Kim, who also fumed that lobbyists for rival bidder Cohen were allegedly whipping up votes against him. Bronx Democrats back the project. But Councilwoman Kristy Marmarato, a Republican whose district includes Bally's Golf Link at Ferry Point, opposes it. Her opposition triggered five of her GOP colleagues — including Council Minority Leader Joanne Ariola — to vote against the project that could benefit the president and his company. During the vote, Marmarato said her constituents opposed the proposed casino and blasted 'outside interference' and 'special interests' lobbying. City Hall insisted the mayor pushed for Bally's to get a fair hearing from the state Gaming Commission with its casino bid, and wasn't putting his thumb on the scale for the gaming operator or Trump. 'Mayor Adams supports a fair process with as many competitive casino bids in New York City as possible, each of which would bring good-paying union jobs and an economic boost to the community,' an Adams spokesman said. 'It does not matter which proposal is selected by the state so long as it's in New York City. We would be supportive of more than one selection in New York City, but that requires more than one competitive proposal.' Bally's applauded the Council's action. 'We appreciate the City Council, including the Speaker and Bronx Delegation in particular, for recognizing the opportunity that this project can afford to the Bronx and the City as a whole. Their actions today allow us to move forward to the next step of making this happen for NYC,' said Christopher Jewett, Bally's senior vice president of corporate development. He said Bally's has been a 'good neighbor' and will continue to work closely with elected officials and residents. Cohen's team declined to comment.

NYC Mayor Gives Boost to Bally's Casino Ahead of Council Vote

By Nacha Cattan and Save New York City Mayor Eric Adams endorsed local legislation that would ease the path for Bally's Corp. to build a casino in the Bronx. Adams issued a so-called 'Mayor's Message' Wednesday in support of a measure allowing the state legislature to vote on alienating state parkland in the Bronx for Bally's to use as a casino. The move allows the measure to be passed by the City Council with a simple majority instead of the two-thirds typically required, before heading to the state Assembly and Senate.
