Dublin Dance Festival 2025: In Somnole, Boris Charmatz drifts like the mind before sleep. The result is compulsively unpredictable

appears alone and exposed, bare-chested and barefooted, wearing a patterned pleated skirt, on a bare, darkened stage with no music. And for an hour he creates a soundtrack through whistling that accompanies a series of unconnected movement phrases that meander like the drifting mind before sleep. The result is uneven and unfocused but compulsive in its unpredictability.
Charmatz, who is the outgoing artistic director of
Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch
, in Germany, and a big figure in European dance, created Somnole during lockdown in 2020. He wanted to physicalise and make visible the workings of the mind. What has emerged is not dry and cerebral but a rattle-bag of ideas full of whimsy and humour.
He includes snippets of baroque pieces, love songs and film music that emerge, tail off or morph into another melody. Some are recognisable, others less so – Billie Eilish's Bad Guy might feature. Ennio Morricone's theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, a whistling tour de force, elicits the most audience giggles.
Charmatz's movements are mostly contained and stationary. In the opening of the piece he slowly walks into the space, arms undulating upwards as if searching for something in the half-darkness. Later he stands with his back to the audience and slowly articulates the muscles in his back, in rippling patterns. Occasionally he breaks the slow rhythm, such as by frantically running in circles, in a green-blue wash of light, with the manic frustration of an insomniac.

Breaking out of his solitary explorations, he tries to lead the audience in a version of Mozart's Voi Che Sapete, from The Marriage of Figaro, and has a slow, circling dance with an audience member.
Ultimately, the whistling is more than a novel accompaniment. At one point Charmatz suddenly whooshes and gasps, as if his windpipe were punctured. The effect is to highlight his breath as the physical survival mechanism for his movement.
Leaving the stage as he entered, he whistles Handel's Lascia ch'io Pianga, which mentions sighs of freedom. Just like the last breath before both body and mind finally submit to sleep.

Tommy Bowe questions woman's decision to bring child to tennis match
Tommy Bowe has questioned the decision of a parent to bring their child to a tennis match after the child in question disrupted the players by crying. Partway through the match between Emma Raducanu and Aryna Sabalenka at the Cincinnati Open, Raducanu complained about the crying child 'for ten minutes' to the chair umpire, who replied in seemingly disbelief by asking whether Raducanu wanted the child to be removed, to which Raducanu and some of the crowd responded in the affirmative. Bowe told actor Gerard Jordan, who was appearing on the show, that he wouldn't have brought his children to such an event, and in an imagined scenario where a babysitter fell through at the last minute, the ex-rugby star claimed that in that situation he would have simply stayed at home with the children. "As a parent, I would know that it would be too stressful for me to take my child in there to be put in that situation. So I'd decide, no, I don't think it's worth upsetting the other people who are watching it and me being put under the stress of doing it. I'll watch it on the telly," said Bowe. Tommy Bowe Like Raducanu, Bowe has come in for some criticism for his comments, with one social media user saying "Disappointed in these comments. No compassion for that mom. Gerard Jordan is just trying to inspire people to put themselves in someone else's shoes for two seconds but y'all can't even do that." Others have defended Bowe, and have suggested that in a sporting event like tennis where the crowd remains mostly silent, perhaps a young child isn't suited to such an environment. As for the match itself, Sabalenka won in three sets as she continues to build momentum ahead of next month's US Open, where Raducanu will team with Carlos Alcaraz in mixed doubles action.

Sharlene Mawdsley and GAA star boyfriend take big step in relationship
Sharlene Mawdsley appears to be primed to take a huge step in her relationship with her boyfriend, Tipperary hurling hero Mikey Breen. Sharlene and Mikey went public with their relationship earlier this summer, with the Olympian spotted at Croke Park cheering defender Breen on during the Premier County's run to the Liam MacCarthy Cup. Taking to social media on Tuesday, Sharlene posted a cryptic message on her Instagram story that appears to suggest that herself and Breen are moving to a new home. Sharing a snap of two keys on a table in a living room on her Instagram story, Mawdsley tagged Breen while captioning the story 'End of the Thurles Era @mikeybreeno.' Mawdsley and Breen confirmed their relationship this summer, and the pair appeared on stage at Tipperary's Semple Stadium homecoming following Tipp's All-Ireland win over Cork. Sprinter Mawdsley was even spotted racing some Tipperary fans after a long night of celebrations following the win, and needless to say the Newport AC star cruised to victory. It has been a difficult year for Mawdsley since starring at the Paris Olympics with Team Ireland. The 27-year-old had to deal with an injury hit start to the year, while she also suffered in her personal life as her father, Thomas, passed away at the beginning of June. The relay specialist returned to the track later in the summer and recently picked up a National 200m title as she pipped Sarah Lavin and Lauren Roy in an epic race at Morton Stadium earlier this month.

The Liam MacCarthy Cup has been steadily making its way around Tipperary the last month. Nenagh has already witnessed some rapturous scenes with the trophy. And it was back in the town again, this time in Nenagh Hospital where some of the All-Ireland winners took it on a tour of the wards. And it got a joyful and sometimes emotional reception.
