'Honest conversations': Maro Itoje reacts after Lions dominate Australia in First Test to take series lead

Yahoo4 days ago
British and Irish Lions captain Maro Itoje has admitted the squad can have 'some honest conversations' on the back of their win over Australia.
The Lions beat Australia 27-19 in Brisbane on Saturday to take a 1-0 lead in their three-Test series.
In the first test match between the two sides in Australia for just over a decade, the tourists dominated the first-half to take a 17-5 lead into the break following tries from Sione Tuipulotu and Tom Curry.
However, after Dan Sheehan extended the advantage early in the second half, Andy Farrell's side took their foot off the gas and that allowed for Australia to set up a nervy finish.
The hosts were rewarded for a dominant spell when Carlo Tizzano barrelled over and ate McDermott claimed a late consolation try after Marcus Smith drilled over a penalty to create a 15-point for the Lions.
Ultimately, the tourists held on to claim victory and Itoje - celebrating his 100th international cap - said afterwards that there is room for improvement ahead of the Second Test.
Speaking to Sky Sports he said: "It was a tough old game, no game of rugby is perfect. That definitely wasn't perfect for us.
'It puts us in a good position because we can have some honest conversations off the back of that game and there's lots for us to build on we definitely are not complacent or comfortable."
Expanded on what he meant by 'honest conversations', Itoje said: "We put pressure on ourselves particularly exiting our half and some of our decision making.
'But again, Rugby is not perfect, we will build, we will get better and move on.'
The Lions will go to Melbourne next Saturday with a chance to clinch the three-test series and retain the trophy they won here in 2013.

Injured Rishabh Pant will miss India's fifth test vs. England

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — India's Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the final test against England with a foot fracture. India coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed Pant's injury for the first time after the visitors salvaged a draw in the fourth test at Old Trafford on Sunday. Pant retired hurt on day one when taken off the field on a cart with his foot badly swollen but he returned, limping, on day 2 to reach a half century. 'It's been declared that he's out of the series, and one thing I want to say is that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on something Rishabh did for the team and for the country as well,' Gambhir said. 'Any amount of praise is not enough for him, especially batting with a broken foot. 'I think the generations to come forward will talk about it and the generations coming forward should talk about it.' Pant was injured when attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes and the ball deflected onto his right ankle and foot. India did not confirm at the time the extent of the injury, but he was replaced as wicket-keeper by Dhruv Jurel for the remainder of the match. He wasn't required to bat in India's second innings, with the visitors earning a draw in Manchester after Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar (101 not out) all reached centuries on the final day. England leads the series 2-1 going into the final test at the Oval next week. ___ James Robson is at

It's mind boggling: Ian Thorpe blown away by upset win

Australian swimming legend Ian Thorpe has praised the country's rebuilding 4x100m women's freestyle relay team after they pulled off a shock victory over the US at the world championships in Singapore. Mollie O'Callaghan, Meg Harris, Milla Jansen and Olivia Wunsch entered Sunday night's final in Singapore with a nothing-to-lose approach against hot favourites the US. The tactic worked a treat, with Wunsch reeling in star American Torri Huske in the final 50m to produce a huge upset victory and a first gold medal for Australia at the 2025 world championships. What a finish by 🇦🇺 Olivia Wunsch to close the Women's 4x100m Relay 🤯🤯 #Swimming #AQUASingapore25 — World Aquatics (@WorldAquatics) July 27, 2025 Thorpe praised Australia's efforts, especially considering they did it without retired star Emma McKeon. Wunsch (19 years old) and Jansen (18) are still teenagers, leaving Harris (23) and O'Callaghan is (21) as the relay team's leaders in Singapore. "It is really difficult to be able to find someone to match our most successful Olympian we've ever seen - Emma McKeon. She's not there," Thorpe said. "Cate Campbell's not there. Bronte Campbell's not there. "But what we do have in Australia is the consistency in this race, that it's tough to make this team. "And what I'm most impressed with is ... how they could lift for the entire team in this race. Amazing stuff." Thorpe heaped special praise on Olympic gold medallist Harris, who produced 50m splits of 24.34s and 27.53s across her 100m leg to be the fastest Australian. "Her split was mind boggling," Thorpe told Channel 9. O'Callaghan said the win came as a shock given how young the team is. "I knew it was going be a very tough year, like we've had so many rookies come through, and it's great to see them," she said. "They're trying to gain experience, and it's amazing to see them step up and perform. "We didn't really have expectations on this meet, especially for this 4x100m. "It was just about gaining experience, setting up for the next four years. But I'm incredibly proud of these three amazing women, and the two others who swam in the heats." The Australian men were just as impressive, with the quartet of Kyle Chalmers, Flynn Southam, Kai Taylor and Maximillian Giuliani posting a world championship-record time of 3:08.97 to defeat Italy (3:09.58) and the fading US (3:09.64). CHAMPIONS! 💥The Aussie power squad smashes the Championships Record in the Men's 4x100m Freestyle Relay with a blazing 3:08.97! 🔥 #Swimming #AQUASingapore25 — World Aquatics (@WorldAquatics) July 27, 2025 Chalmers started from behind in the final leg before producing a powerful swim to lift Australia to victory. "We've all been able to swim really well individually or split great times at different points, but it's been a matter of doing it all together at the same time, which I think we were able to do tonight," Chalmers said. "And like I said to the boys, it's all about now just getting it right in LA in three years time, and standing on the top of the podium there. "It'd be really nice to be able to do that." Monday's early action will feature 16-year-old Sienna Toohey and Ella Ramsay in the women's 100m breaststroke heats, Kaylee McKeown in the 100m backstroke heats, Josh Edwards-Smith in the men's 100m backstroke, and Lani Pallister in the women's 1500m freestyle.

Pogačar effectively seals 4th Tour de France title as organizers neutralize times before stage ends

PARIS (AP) — Slovenian rider Tadej Pogačar effectively sealed his fourth Tour de France title on Sunday after organizers decided to neutralize the times with 50 kilometers (31 miles) left because of the threat of rain and crashes. Freezing the times for the 21st and final stage into Paris all-but-ensured victory for Pogačar, but he still had to cross the finish line later in order to win. The decision was made in the late afternoon and, shortly after Pogačar reached 50 kilometers to go, heavy rain began falling and drenched the roads. The 26-year-old Pogačar is the defending champion and won his other Tour titles in 2020 and '21. ___ Tour de France coverage: and The Associated Press
