India's annual GDP growth slows to 6.5%, lowest in four years
NEW DELHI, India: India's economy hit a four-year low of 6.5 percent, lifted by an impressive fourth-quarter growth at 7.4 percent.
The Reserve Bank of India had projected 6.5 percent GDP growth for the fiscal year 2024-2025. In 2023-2024, India's GDP grew by an impressive 9.2 percent, continuing to be the fastest-growing major economy.
According to official data, the economy grew 8.7 percent and 7.2 percent, respectively, in 2021-2022 and 2022-2023.
In a March 2025 report, the Ministry of Finance anticipated that the Indian economy would achieve a growth rate of 6.5 percent in 2024-2025 despite considerable external headwinds.
India's economy grew faster in the January–March period, helped by stronger demand in villages and more government spending. However, private companies held off on new investments because of global uncertainty.
Earlier, economists in a Reuters poll expected India's GDP to have grown 6.7 percent compared to the same time last year. This is higher than the 6.2 percent growth in the previous three months.
Gaura Sen Gupta, chief economist at IDFC First Bank, said rural spending improved, but urban demand showed mixed signs. She also said government spending helped support investment.
GDP includes taxes and subsidies, which can change a lot. GVA removes those to give a clearer picture.
JP Morgan expected GDP to grow 7.5 percent in the March quarter, but GVA will grow 6.7 percent, up from 6.2 percent in the quarter before.
India's central bank expected GDP to grow 6.5 percent in the new financial year that started on April 1. At this pace, India would remain the fastest-growing major economy and could reach the size of Japan's economy this year, around $4.18 trillion, according to the IMF.
Even though the global economy is facing problems like trade tensions, India seems less affected. This is because it doesn't rely as much on international trade, and the government has cut taxes and kept interest rates low.
Kaushik Das of Deutsche Bank said that both the government and the central bank are working closely to support growth and are ready to take decisive action if needed.
Retail inflation fell to 3.16 percent in April, the lowest in nearly six years. With a good monsoon expected, food prices should stay stable. This could lead the central bank to cut interest rates again in June.
The finance ministry said that tax cuts, recent government measures, and expected central bank rate cuts could help the economy grow by 6.3 percent to 6.8 percent this year.

India plans curbs on overseas remittances, offshore deposits may be barred: Sources
India's central bank plans to tighten rules for overseas remittances by resident Indians, barring them from holding foreign currency deposits with lock-in periods, two government sources said. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will amend regulations to prevent overseas transfers from being used to park money in time deposits or other interest-bearing accounts abroad, one of the sources said. "This is akin to passive wealth shifting, which is a red flag for the RBI in a still-controlled capital regime," the first source familiar with the thinking of the central bank said. The proposed changes reflect India's cautious stance on a rise in outward remittances and full convertibility of the rupee, as authorities strive to safeguard foreign exchange reserves and manage currency volatility, the sources said. (Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates) Overseas investments by individuals fall under the central bank's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) - which allows resident Indians to remit up to $250,000 in a single year - for purposes ranging from foreign education, travel, equity and debt investments to medical treatments. While discussions with the government are ongoing, the RBI aims to ensure such deposits cannot be made even under alternate names, the second source said. Both sources declined to be identified due to the confidentiality of the talks. The finance ministry and the RBI did not respond to emailed requests for comment. The move is part of a comprehensive review of the legal framework governing the scheme to simplify the regulations, a priority highlighted by the central bank in its annual report. RBI data showed that deposits under outward remittances by resident individuals rose sharply to $173.2 million in March from $51.62 million in February. Outward remittances typically spike in March as it allows residents to maximise their annual limits and optimise taxes, making it the busiest month under LRS but the RBI is concerned that a portion of this may be getting passively financial year 2024/25, total annual outward remittances under the scheme dipped but remained high at nearly $30 billion compared with $31 billion a year ago. The sources did not disclose the amount currently held in foreign currency deposit accounts, but said the move is "preventative". India's outward remittances under the scheme have steadily increased, particularly as fintech platforms and private banks have made global investing easier for retail investors. "The move addresses a growing misuse of the scheme as a vehicle for passive capital export," the second source said. "It also aligns the scheme more closely with India's calibrated approach to capital account convertibility." India has remained cautious on allowing unrestricted outflows, partly to preserve its foreign exchange reserves and manage currency volatility. The revised rules will not affect permissible foreign investments in equities, mutual funds or property under the LRS, the second source said.

‘Investors from US, Middle East interested…': Adani Airport Holdings may raise $1 billion in equity; first time from external investor
The airport division, which is entirely owned by Adani Enterprises Ltd, has an estimated value of $20 billion. Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL) is considering raising approximately $1 billion in equity from international investors whilst assessing expansion strategies and possible acquisitions, Adani Group CFO Jugeshinder Singh has said. The airport venture will be seeking external investor equity funding for the first time. The airport division, which is entirely owned by Adani Enterprises Ltd, has an estimated value of $20 billion, according to sources quoted in an ET report. This valuation surpasses GMR Airport's market capitalisation of $10.4 billion. GMR operates airports across various locations including New Delhi, Hyderabad, Goa and Nagpur. AAHL, which holds the position of India's largest private airport operator, currently manages seven airports - Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Mangaluru, Jaipur, Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram. The company is completing its eighth airport in Navi Mumbai, scheduled to commence operations in August. Adani Airport Holdings Seeks International Investors "Everyone wants to do airports with us - investors from the US, Middle East and Australia have evinced interest in investing in the business," said Sagar Adani, nephew of group chairman Gautam Adani. Sagar Adani is also executive director, Adani Green Energy. CareEdge Ratings estimates that India's air passenger traffic will grow at 9% CAGR between FY25 and FY27, reaching a volume of 485 million. Adani Airports Across India According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, India's domestic air passenger traffic showed a 10.35% yearly increase in FY25. Airlines transported 14.54 million passengers across their routes. AAHL plans to capitalise on this growth by expanding its infrastructure, particularly with airports in Mumbai-Navi Mumbai and other strategic locations, aiming to triple its capacity over the next 15 years. Adani CFO Singh indicated uncertainty about their immediate plans, saying, "We also have not decided whether we want to do it or not yet. So what we are thinking about is — is it a good idea for us to do it right now or should we wait two-three years once the build-out happens and the value is established." In January, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) provided an investment of ₹6,300 crore to GMR Enterprises (GEPL), the promoter entity of GMR Group, to decrease their debt burden. Regarding expansion plans, Singh said, "We are open to acquisitions in India and internationally. For international deals, it will have to be an international city pair which caters to an Indian diaspora. If there's a lot of Indian passengers going to a specific airport in some other city in the world, and if that opportunity comes up, we will look at that." The organisation plans to establish the airport business as an independent subsidiary within the next two-three years, before proceeding with its listing. AAHL reported a 7% increase in passenger traffic, handling 94 million passengers in FY25 compared to FY24.
