IND vs ENG: Rampant Rishabh Pant can afford to smile

A few months ago,
Rishabh Pant
found himself at the dark end of a tunnel. His recklessness in both innings of the fourth Test against Australia at the MCG was seen as one of the reasons behind India's series defeat, especially since the series was locked at 1-1 till that point.
The team management was unhappy, Pant lost his place in the ODI first XI in the Champions Trophy while
Sanju Samson
seemed to be taking a runaway lead in the T20 scheme of things. The fact that Pant had a bad IPL as Lucknow Supergiants captain didn't help his cause either.

Since his India debut during the Nottingham Test of the England series in 2018, the wicketkeeper-batter's place in the team had never been in doubt. The horrific car accident in Dec 2022 was obviously a massive blow but the spunky Pant always knew that the moment he was fit to play, he would be back in India colours.

But all that seemed to be falling apart following the Australia debacle. Until Saturday, that is. The broad smile that is part and parcel of the Pant package was back as he lofted offie Shoaib Bashir for a six to reach his seventh Test century — the most by an Indian wicketkeeper-batter — to go past
MS Dhoni
. India have entered a new era and the management, despite its reservations about Pant's white-ball game, has made him the vice-captain for Tests.
It was a vote of confidence that the 27-year-old so desperately needed. But the beauty of Pant is that the added responsibility didn't send him into a shell.
He was yet to score on Friday evening when he stepped out to
Ben Stokes
— who was high on confidence after getting centurion
Yashasvi Jaiswal
with a beauty — and hit him straight over the allrounder's head. Even the England captain couldn't help but laugh at the audacity of the young player. Probably Stokes saw shades of himself in Pant.
Quiz:
Who's that IPL player?
Pant made things look ridiculously easy during his 134 and
Cheteshwar Pujara
, during the pre-match show, explained how the left-hander took the pressure off his partner with the way he batted. 'When I batted with Pant, I saw his ability to throw the bowler off his line and length. Batting at the other end, it helped me as well and run-scoring became that much easier,' the former India No. 3 said.
While the courage to go after the bowling is intrinsic to Pant's attacking style of batting, there's a method to his madness. Pant's sudden burst of boundaries after a slight period of lull often wows the fans, but Pujara says it's part of a plan. 'You'll see these sudden phases when Pant starts defending with a dead bat for a few deliveries. It is often to give the bowler a false sense of confidence so that he bowls in the same spot.
He predicts the length very well and plays those ramp shots which may look quite dangerous from the outside,' Pujara said.

Praise the Pope: Ben Duckett, Alastair Cook laud Ollie's ton vs India at Leeds

Before the first Test in the India-England series at Leeds, the home team was faced with a dilemma whether to stick with Ollie Pope or choose Jacob Bethell. Pope, despite a big hundred recently, never enjoyed the best record against India or Australia previously. But on Day 2 of the first Test, Pope went on to score a hundred, after being dropped when he was on 60 by Yashasvi Jaiswal. This is Pope's second hundred against India, the first coming in Hyderabad when he scored 196 runs last year. 'It sums up and proves why he's England number three,' said opener Ben Duckett, who made 62 in a stand of 122 with the England vice-captain. Duckett also spoke about the talk around England's Test selection choices and how Pope was seen as a clear choice to play at Headingley, especially after he scored 171 against Zimbabwe at Nottingham in May. 'There's noise outside of a dressing room but there's no noise in it,' said Duckett. 'We're not having discussions about who's going to play. It seemed pretty clear coming into this Test match that if a bloke scores 171 a few weeks ago he's going to play this one.' Pope's handling of Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah was praised by former England skipper Alastair Cook. The former left-hand batsman said that Pope looked in control when playing against Bumrah. 'The way he played Bumrah, he without doubt played with the most control,' former England captain Alastair Cook told Test Match Special. 'Whether it is a conscious effort, he played the ball later. He looked way less frenetic.' Pope is set to continue his innings on Day 3 with Harry Brook at the other end. Day 2's end saw Brook go through a nervous last few minutes against a menacing Bumrah, an atmosphere that could be replicated early on Day 3.

After winning IPL 2025, Senior RCB member meets Swami Chidanad Saraswati in Rishikesh, his name is...... New Delhi: Former Zimbabwean cricketer and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) coach Andy Flower met Swami Chidanand Saraswati, president and spiritual guru of Paramarth Niketan Ashram, on Saturday. He recently led RCB to its first IPL title as a coach. There's more to win— Andy Flower Speaking to ANI, Flower said, 'I was talking to Swamiji about the teams. Our tendency as a sports organization is to grab the trophy that we want to win. And everything is about winning. But from my playing and coaching experience, winning is not enough. There has to be something more meaningful in it, something more meaningful. Because winning is sometimes a bit hollow after winning sometimes there has to be something else to it. We were talking about what type of impact you can have on others and groups but for that you won't necessarily have a positive impact on yourself unless you are in a good position. Could.' New perspective from yoga Speaking about the experience he spent in Rishikesh on the occasion of International Yoga Day, Andy Flower said, 'It was a fantastic experience. I have been in Rishikesh for the past two weeks and have been learning a lot about yoga. I have learned that yoga is not just a one-hour class, but it is a lifestyle for millions of people that I have practiced, physically and physically. Enjoyed a lot. Andy Flower: The wonder of coaching in every league Andy Flower led England to win the Ashes and the T20 World Cup, then Wonders in The Hundred and many leagues around the world. He made Maratha Arabians, Multan Sultans, Trent Rockets and Gulf Giants champions. He also gave successes to Lucknow and RCB in the IPL. His coaching career has been full of accomplishments.
