Jamie Mulgrew on his European wish as he embarks on another continental campaign
For the Blues captain reaching the group stages of a European competition would be "the pinnacle" of a storied career.
Mulgrew knows it is not an easy thing to achieve having gone agonisingly close with Linfield in the past but it's a dream he holds dear.

"People can go on about finances, but for me personally as a player, to be able to play in the group stages of a European competition would be the pinnacle really," Mulgrew said ahead of tonight's Champions League qualifier against Shelbourne.
"So again, you reach this stage every year of playing in Europe and that's what the excitement would be to be able to achieve that. And again, what Larne did obviously was fantastic. Would we all love to do that? Yes.
"Is it going to be easy? Definitely not. But that doesn't mean you can't have those dreams and those aspirations to one day achieve that."
Mulgrew begins another European campaign tonight at Tolka Park and he says it still excites him as much as ever.
"I'm 39 now, so I get excited about every game because you don't know when it's going to finish," he said.
"I think it's vitally important that when you come into your work every day you enjoy and you embrace everything that comes with it.
"Certainly tonight will be the same. No matter what team you're playing, it's the early rounds of the Champions League and the opportunity to possibly progress.
"And yes, you can go on about finances and all that there, but us as players, it's the prestige of getting through a round.
"The finances available for the club, obviously it's fantastic, but first and foremost, for us to get through a round and to give ourselves an opportunity then to push on and hopefully reach a group stage eventually, that's got to be the main goal for us as a team and individuals."

Travis Hunter's teammate 'selfishly' desires him to play more offense
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence has an exciting new teammate joining him on the roster for next season: Travis Hunter. The former Colorado Buffaloes star, like Lawrence, was a First-Team All-American when he played college football. Unlike the quarterback, who won the College Football Playoff national championship in 2018, Hunter quite famously played both sides of the ball throughout college and during his 2024 Heisman Trophy campaign. Lawrence, who was selected by the Jaguars at No. 1 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, will have Hunter as a weapon in Jacksonville's offense next season after his team selected Hunter at No. 2 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. More: Travis Hunter would rather quit football than choose between offense and defense in NFL Hunter, however, is not particularly willing to choose between playing just offense or defense in the pros. While the Jaguars are taking their time with easing Hunter into both of his positions, Lawrence certainly has a preference for where he wants his new teammate to line up. Here is what Lawrence said, with his full quote and thoughts on the topic: "We're getting there. Obviously, he's playing a little bit of both ways. He's so talented. It's hard to keep him off the field. Selfishly, I definitely want him on offense more. I told him, it's like: Do you want to come catch touchdowns or do you want to maybe break up a pass or two a game? That's a decision you've got to make ... He'll make plays no matter where he's at, honestly, and of course as a quarterback I hope he plays more offense. But wherever he needs to play to make our team better, because he will make us better, is what's going to happen. So I'm all for whatever that is." That is fairly compelling argument from Lawrence if Hunter wants to make some highlight reels. The good news for Lawrence is that while Hunter is listed as a second-string cornerback in Jacksonville's first depth chart, he is considered a starting wide receiver. Taulia Tagovailoa lands in the Indoor Football League
Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, is persistent. With no opportunity in the NFL and with the CFL releasing him in May 2025, Taulia found an opportunity in something called the Indoor Football League. And he took it. Taulia Tagovailoa signed with the Massachusetts Pirates of the IFL in late June. He made his first start in the final game of the 16-game regular season, a 45-30 loss to the Bay Area Panthers on July 25. In the game, Taulia completed eight of 17 passes for 55 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. He added 66 rushing yards on nine carries and a pair of touchdowns. 'For my younger brother, I would tell him, 'Man, he must really love this' because he played in the CFL, then he went to Germany to play, then he came to Boston to play in the [Indoor] Football League," Tua Tagovailoa told reporters on Wednesday. "So he's got a little cooler gig, if you will, than me with traveling to different places and seeing things, but I love my brother. I support him in any and everything that he does and I'm here for him for whatever he needs.' Taulia doesn't need passion for the sport. He does whatever he has to do to keep playing football, wherever, however.

Ousmane Dembélé and Chloe Kelly nominated for men's and women's Ballon d'Or awards
PARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembélé and England forward Chloe Kelly are among the contenders to win the men's and women's Ballon d'Or award. The 30 men's and 30 women's nominees were revealed Thursday by France Football magazine, with the winners to be announced at a ceremony in Paris on Sept. 22. The 28-year-old Dembélé was inspirational in leading PSG to its first Champions League title after years of falling short and helped the French club complete a treble. Teenage star Lamine Yamal, whose mesmerizing performances lit up the Champions League and helped Barcelona win the Spanish league title, is among the other men's nominees. Kelly starred for England at Euros When England won the women's European Championship last month, the 27-year-old Kelly blasted home the decisive penalty in the final against World Cup winner Spain. She also played a key role earlier in the tense knockout stages. Last season, Kelly played on the right flank as Arsenal won the women's Champions League with another against-the-odds win over powerhouse Barcelona. She faces competition from defender Lucy Bronze and goalkeeper Hannah Hampton — her England teammates who both play for Chelsea — and from Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmatí, the winner of the past two awards. Barcelona players have won the past four women's awards. Bronze was runner-up in 2019 to U.S. forward Megan Rapinoe. PSG players in the spotlight Dembélé was one of nine PSG players nominated for the men's award, including goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, forward Désiré Doué, who scored twice in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the Champions League final, and inspirational winger Khvitcha Kvaratskhelia. The other men's nominees include Egypt striker Mo Salah, whose 29 league goals helped Liverpool win the Premier League, and prolific Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé. Midfielder Rodri won the Ballon d'Or last year after impressing with Manchester City and Spain but missed most of last season with a knee injury. Real Madrid snubbed the star-studded ceremony last year in apparent protest because its forward Vinícius Júnior finished in second place. After staying away, Madrid and its players then vented their feelings on social media. The voting system The Ballon d'Or was created by France Football magazine and has been awarded since 1956 for men, and since 2018 for women. It is voted for by journalists from the top 100 countries in the FIFA rankings for the men's award and the top 50 FIFA-ranked countries for the women's award. Each journalist, one per country, selects players in ranked order with points attributed to each position. The winner is the player who receives the most points. Other nominations PSG coach Luis Enrique was among the nominees for best men's coach and England's Sarina Wiegman best women's coach. Donnarumma, whose shot-stopping in the knockout stages proved crucial to PSG's success, is favored to win the Lev Yashin award for best men's goalkeeper, while Hampton is among the five women's candidates for that award. ___ AP soccer:
