Governor assents Greater Bengaluru Bill, city may come under multiple civic bodies
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has given his assent to the Greater
Bengaluru Governance
Bill 2024 that was passed in both the Houses of the Legislature, last month. The Bill seeks to improve the quality of life for citizens by instituting a decentralized governance framework.
Both Assembly and Council passed the Bill with a set of amendments suggested by the joint house panel. The Governor had earlier returned the Bill to the government seeking certain clarifications.

Greater Bengaluru Authority
(GBA) for supervising and coordinating the greater Bengaluru area.

The Bill paves the way for setting up seven separate
city municipal corporations
in the place of the unwieldy
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike
(BBMP). The move is expected to double are municipal area of Bengaluru from the present 708 sq km.
The proposed law powers ward committees to become basic units of urban governance and facilitate community participation.

INDUSTRIAL TOWNSHIPS
The government's move to expand Bengaluru city area by splitting its civic body BBMP has also sparked fears of independent townships like Electronic City Industrial Township Authority (Elcita) and Bidadi Industrial Area Township Authority falling apart.
Elcita has been hailed as a successful experiment in managing industrial suburbs. The body governing the electronic city enjoys municipal as well as taxation powers. The civic body manages the 902-acre industrial township on Bengaluru's outskirts that is home to more than 300 companies including Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, and Siemens.
Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, speaking on the Bill in the assembly on March 10, regretted helping create Elcita years ago as Urban Development Minister. He called his decision on Elcita a blunder while responding to two BJP MLAs, M Satish Reddy (Bommanahalli) and M Krishnappa (Bengaluru South), both of whom sought inclusion of electronics city into the municipal governance structure of Bengaluru.
There were suggestions on social media to leave the independent township authorities out of the proposed seven corporations, and instead bring other industrialised areas such as Srajapura, Jigani and Bidadi under Greater Bengaluru as they are battling woeful infrastructure, having been governed by local gram panchayats.
The BJP and its political ally JDS, however, have opposed the move, doubting the intentions of the proposed law.

Guwahati, June 9 (UNI) Iterating the BJP-led Assam government's stern stand on Bangladeshi citizens entering or living in India illegally, state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday informed the Assembly that the government has pushed back almost 330 such unauthorised foreigners, and none of them has returned. 'It is not possible for them to return, and we are firm on this. And this pushback will be intensified, it will be expedited. The way illegal immigrants have entered the state from Bangladesh and Pakistan, we have to be more proactive to keep the state safe," said Sarma. The Chief Minister was replying to a demand by opposition members, including Congress' Debabrata Saikia and AIUDF's Ashraful Hussain to discuss on the issue of National Register of Citizens (NRC). While raising the issue, Saikia said that while the government has claimed to have pushed back illegal foreigners, some of them again entered Assam, making the government's stand vague on the issue. The Chief Minister further informed the House that the state government has also decided to reinforce the Illegal (Expulsion from Assam) Act 1950. "Under the Illegal Expulsion Act 1950, the District Commissioner, if he is reasonably convinced that a certain individual is a foreigner, can remove that individual without referring a case to the Tribunal," he said. The Chief Minister said the government has taken inspiration from former Chief Minister Bimala Prasad Chaliha, who had pushed back illegal immigrants. 'We are taking inspiration from the good works of the Congress,' he said while referring to Chaliha, who was a Congress Chief Minister. "There are two ways to identify illegal immigrants in Assam — one is the Tribunal and the other is the Illegal Expulsion Act 1950. There the word 'push back'is not there, but 'remove' is there," he added Expressing his concern over the issue, the Chief Minister further said that the government has found out almost 2600 Facebook accounts, which were operated from Islamabad, Riyadh and Saudi Arab. "They don't even welcome Rahul Gandhi, but welcome one particular individual from Assam. And I have documents, within the next ten to 12 days I'll provide some information about such accounts to the press,' he said. 'These accounts post only on two occasion, either on Palestine or on Assam, nothing else. I am not saying that the Muslims of Assam are not indigenous. Indigenous is a secular definition. ... Shongtong-Karcham gets 2026 deadline, HP bets big on hydro
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has set a firm Nov 2026 deadline for the completion of the long-delayed Shongtong-Karcham hydroelectric project, saying the 450-MW plant will generate Rs 1,000 crore in annual revenue and strengthen the state's green energy ambitions. Sukhu on Monday inspected the under-construction site in Kinnaur district — visiting both the power house at Karcham and the barrage site at Powari — where he met engineers and workers. He said that even though the project had dragged on for 13 years, the state's current Congress govt had fast-tracked its progress and was committed to commissioning it on schedule. "This project symbolises our focus on tapping river resources to drive economic growth," Sukhu said, adding that the state was moving actively to regain control over stalled or externally-managed hydroelectric initiatives. He claimed that the govt was assessing the total expenditure incurred on other major hydropower projects — including Dhaulasidh, Luhri, and Sunni — with plans to resume and regulate their construction under state-led terms. "Unlike the previous BJP govt, which compromised state interests, we are prioritising Himachal Pradesh's control over its energy assets," Sukhu said.
