Journalists play important role in curbing spread of fake news
She said trained journalists know their roles and responsibilities as Malaysian citizens to verify the authenticity of any news, thus ensuring the public can differentiate between fake and real news.
She added that, as of Aug 1, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had requested 16,110 fake news content be taken down, which is an alarming increase compared to the 5,367 cases in 2023 and 17,245 cases in 2024.
'Scammers are now increasingly clever in using artificial intelligence (AI) to generate fake videos and voices to deceive victims,' she said at the launch of the 2025 Malaysian Tamil Media Organisation Annual General Meeting here.
In addition, she said the public is easily duped when exposed to unverified information that is repeatedly shared across various social media platforms until it is eventually accepted as true.
She cited the case of Zara Qairina Mahathir, which went viral after the Form One student died due to alleged bullying in school.
'Social media was flooded with various accusations and fake information, including claims that she was put into a washing machine for two hours. Although police confirmed a few days ago that it was fake news, I believe many still think it actually happened.
'So, this trend is unhealthy and dangerous if it is not curbed. It can cause public anxiety, especially since it is related to the safety of school students,' she said.
Zara Qairina was confirmed dead at the Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17 after being admitted to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha dormitory, Papar at 4 am on July 16.
In addition, Teo said the MADANI Government will continue implementing initiatives to combat fake news by introducing the Artificial Intelligence Fact-check Assistance (AIFA) chatbox by MCMC, which can analyse messages in various languages, including Malay, Mandarin and Tamil.
She added that as of July 31, AIFA had received 142,257 messages, averaging 769 fact-checks a day, proving its effectiveness as a rapid tool for information verification and raising digital safety awareness. - Bernama

'Buli' pocket talk at Perlis Connect educates students on dangers, laws
PADANG BESAR: The government's commitment to tackling bullying has been translated into action through a pocket talk session titled 'Buli' (Bullying), held as part of the Perlis Connect programme at Padang Besar Street here on Saturday (Aug 16). The session, conducted by Inspector Harris Md Noor, Senior Investigating Officer of the Padang Besar District Police Headquarters (IPD), covered the definition of bullying, its various forms, the root causes of such behaviour and the legal provisions related to the offence. "This session gave me exposure to the dangers of bullying. From now on, I will be more aware, and if I detect any bullying elements, I know the appropriate actions to take. "I can report it to the Student Representative Council (MPP) for further action, and if it is a serious case, it can be reported directly to the police,' she said. Another participant, Muhamad Haziq Ziqrie Mohamad Aziz, 18, a Foundation in Management student at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Sintok, Kedah, said the talk not only informed him about the punishments for bullying but also served as a reminder for youths to stay away from such behaviour. Police and MCMC track TikTok user over fake Zara Qairina post-mortem claims
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) are tracking a TikTok user who falsely claimed to be a surgeon involved in the post-mortem of Zara Qairina Mahathir. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that the individual falsely asserted his presence during the procedure on Aug 10. The Health Ministry confirmed the person was neither a specialist nor a staff member. Fahmi said the TikTok user spread misinformation during a live session, misleading the public. The false claims went viral, causing widespread confusion. He addressed the issue after launching the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 campaign at the Teacher Education Institute (Malay Language Campus). Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad verified the false claims through an official report. Deputy director-general (Medical) Datuk Dr Nor Azimi Yunus confirmed the forensic team had no such specialist involved. The TikTok user has since set his account to private, complicating investigations. Fahmi warned the public against believing unverified social media content. Spreading false information is punishable by fines of up to RM500,000. Zara Qairina was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17. Shouts of 'Justice for Zara' echo as crowds rally in KL, Ipoh

The Malay language daily also reported that participants of various ages began filling the location as early as 8pm on Saturday to gather in solidarity for Zara Qairina Mahathir, 13, who was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, on July 17, after being found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha, in Papar, at about 4am on July 16. Earlier, security personnel were seen monitoring the gathering site to ensure the event proceeded peacefully. Several community activists also delivered speeches of solidarity, demanding justice for the 13-year-old student. Attendees held placards reading "Justice For Zara Qairina" and "We Reject Bullying" while chanting the solidarity slogan. Meanwhile, in Ipoh, Sinar Harian reported thousands gathered peacefully at the #JusticeforZara rally in Taman Rekreasi Sultan Abdul Aziz, also known as Padang Polo, on Saturday. Organised by the Perak People's Awareness Association, the gathering aimed to show solidarity and demand justice for Zara Qairina. Participants carried placards and banners with messages such as "Justice For Zara", "We want justice for sister Zara", "Justice Is Not To Be Silenced", "Justice Must Be Upheld", and "Stop Bullying Now". Earlier, rally participants also performed special prayers and recited prayers for the deceased. To date, the police have taken more than 80 witness statements, including from students, while the Attorney General's Chambers announced that a full inquiry will be conducted in the Coroner's Court to determine the exact cause of death.
