Hyderabad: With Vinayaka Chavithi just a week away, idol makers and vendors across Hyderabad are anxiously hoping for a turnaround in the weather as sales remain sluggish owing to continuous rains over the past few days.
Dhoolpet, the city's biggest manufacturing hub of Ganesha idols, wore a quiet and unhurried look on Wednesday — a far cry from its busy, bustling self this time of the year. The usual festive shopper crowds were conspicuously missing this time, with artisans and vendors pointing out that many customers who had arrived to buy idols chose to return empty-handed, not wanting to wade through the slushy, waterlogged lanes leading to the stalls.
"My wife and I planned to go festive shopping over the weekend, but the rains forced us to defer our plans. As of now we're breaking up our shopping into small instalments so that we do not get caught in the rains," Naresh Narayan, a resident of Attapur, told TOI.

Idol makers said that with sales yet to pick up pace, many idols are being kept in temporary sheds. "These idols are getting damaged due to moisture, further adding to our losses," Ramesh T, an idol maker in Dhoolpet, said.

"This is the time when sales pick up, but this year's rains have ruined everything. Buyers are not coming in large numbers, and even when they do, they hesitate to walk through the muddy streets."
Apart from Dhoolpet, markets in other parts of the city have also reported dull sales. Vendors said enquiries were trickling in, but purchases were fewer than expected. "Families usually book their idols by now. This time many are yet to do so, as they're possibly waiting for the rains to let up.
We are hoping that the last three to four days before the festival will bring better business," said Kiran Kumar, a vendor in Balanagar.
Adding to their woes is the rise in input costs. Artisans said clay and transport expenses have gone up this year, forcing them to increase prices. But many customers, struggling with inflation themselves, are bargaining harder or postponing their purchases. "The cost of making idols shot up by at least 20%, but customers are unwilling to pay more.
With rains keeping them away, the situation is dicey," said Virat, who owns an idol making store in Dhoolpet.
Despite the gloomy start, artisans are hopeful of a last-minute rush of shoppers. "Experience tells us that Hyderabadis prefer last-minute shopping, and the three days leading up to the festival often bring in a surge. People will come eventually, even if it's late. But whether we can recover our investments fully this year is the question," added Virat.

New Zealand to spend $1.6 billion for US maritime helicopters, Airbus jets
New Zealand said on Thursday it would spend NZ$2.7 billion ($1.6 billion) to buy five MH-60R Seahawk helicopters and two Airbus A321XLR aircraft , the first major investment following a decision to replace the country's aging defence fleet. NZ$2 billion will be used to buy the maritime helicopters, manufactured by Lockheed Martin's Sikorsky unit, and NZ$700 million for the A321XLRs, Defence Minister Judith Collins and Foreign Minister Winston Peters said in a joint statement. Both investments are part of the planned commitments outlined in April in the government's Defence Capability Plan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo New Zealand in April pledged to boost its defence spending by NZ$9 billion over the next four years, and aim to nearly double spending to 2% as a share of GDP in the next eight years as part of the Defence Capability Plan. "We will now move at pace to procure helicopters directly through the United States' Foreign Military Sales programme instead of going to a wider tender, with cabinet expected to consider the final business case next year," Collins said. Live Events The two new Airbus aircraft, set to replace the Boeing 757 planes, will be acquired on a six-year lease-to-buy arrangement. The New Zealand Defence Force's two 757s are more than 30 years old and their age has made them increasingly unreliable, breaking down several times and stranding the nation's leaders, forcing them to take commercial flights. "This decision will ensure New Zealand has a critical combat capable, interoperable and dependable fleet," Collins said. The government's investment decisions showed it was responding to "the sharply deteriorating security environment," Peters said. "Global tensions are increasing rapidly, and we must invest in our national security to ensure our economic prosperity," he added. An intelligence report released on Thursday said New Zealand was facing the toughest national security challenges of recent times with increasing threats of foreign interference and espionage, particularly from China.

Fit-outs now key revenue engine for flexi offices
Office fit out has emerged as a new business stream for flexible work space operators, with the majority of them generating significant revenue from the segment. India recorded a steady 3% increase in fit-out cost across top eight cities in the first half of 2025 but remained one of the most cost-effective office fit-out destinations in the Asia-Pacific, according to Cushman& Wakefield, making it an attractive market for businesses expanding their workplaces. With gross leasing of 42 million square feet during this period, the sector is firmly on track to surpass 90 million sq ft of leasing activity in a year for the first time. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Suva: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo 'The growing demand for customised work environments has transformed fit-outs from an ancillary service into a major business stream for managed workspace operators. Enterprises today are looking for partners who can deliver end-to-end workspace solutions with speed, quality and scale,' said Amit Ramani, chairman and managing director, Awfis Space Solutions Ltd . The company has created a Design & Build vertical to offer the fit out service. Live Events Global capability centres , which account for nearly 40% of office leasing in India , are expected to reach 2,400 centres by 2030 from 1700 currently. Awfis Space Solutions said that its fit-out business has generated revenue of Rs 58 crore, with a healthy pipeline. 'The growth in gross leasing is directly translating into stronger demand for office fit-outs . Fit-outs have evolved from being a peripheral offering to becoming a core business stream for us — contributing significantly to revenues while placing equal responsibility on designing and building sustainable office interiors,' said Mohit Gambhir, co-founder and executive director at Carbon Guardians, a firm specialising in managed offices. India's position as one of the most cost-effective fit-out destinations in APAC makes it a compelling choice for global and domestic occupiers looking to scale efficiently. 'At EFC India , our integrated real estate-as-a-service model, spanning co-working, enterprise solutions and turnkey fit-outs, positions us to deliver sustainable, agile and design-led workplaces across both metros and fast-growing tier-2 and tier-3 hubs,' said Umesh Sahai, managing director, EFC (I) Limited. In 2024, Mumbai was the most expensive market in the country for office fit-outs, at $73 per sq ft, followed by Delhi ($69 per sq ft), according to Cushman & Wakefield. Among the other top eight cities, Bengaluru was next, at $67 per sq ft, while the cost of office fit out in Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune stood at $65 per sq ft.

'Try to fix the Republican Party': JD Vance asks Musk to stand by GoP; amid buzz on Tesla CEO's new political outfit
US vice president JD Vance (AP) US vice president JD Vance on Wednesday cautioned Elon Musk against pursuing a third political party after reports that the Tesla CEO is shelving plans to launch the 'America Party' to focus on his companies. Vance argued Musk would have greater influence by working within the Republican Party alongside president Donald Trump 's MAGA movement. "My advice to Elon would be to try to fix the Republican Party. Try to push it in your own way. Disagree with me all you want, disagree with the president of the United States, but don't pretend that you can make a big difference with a third party," Vance said in an exclusive interview on The Ingraham Angle of Fox News. "I think Elon would make a much bigger difference if he stayed loyal to President Trump's Republican Party, and if he had disagreements, express those disagreements from the inside as opposed from the outside,' he added. Musk had announced in July on his social media platform X that the new party would be formed to give people their 'freedom' back in response to the two-party system. The billionaire entrepreneur split with Trump earlier in 2025 over the president's 'Big, Beautiful Bill,' which Musk argued would add trillions to the US national debt and undermine the department of government efficiency, where he had served in an advisory role. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo According to The Wall Street Journal, Musk has not ruled out reviving the idea of a new party. 'I do think that it would be a huge mistake for Elon to go forward with a third party, and my argument to him is whether you like it or not, you are now perceived by the far left as on the side of the American right,' Vance told Fox News. 'You believe in law and order, you believe in closed borders, you believe in economic growth and prosperity, you believe in making things in the United States of America. The idea that Elon is ever going to go back to being sort of in the middle, where Democrats and Republicans both like him, that's just not going to happen. He is perceived as being on the American right.' Amid speculation that Musk could financially back him, Vance also denied speaking to the billionaire or other donors about a possible 2028 presidential run.
