These key US allies are set to recognize Palestinian state
Three more countries — close U.S. allies — have joined the tally in the last week.
Last week, France said that it would recognize Palestinian statehood, with President Emmanuel Macron stating the move is part of a commitment to a 'just and lasting peace' in the Middle East.
France became the first nation within the Group of Seven (G7) to do so.
The announcement came shortly after negotiations over a ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas broke down, with the Jewish State and the U.S. pulling their negotiators from Qatar. President Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff pinned the blame on Hamas and argued that the officials will consider 'alternative options to bring the hostages home and try to create a more stable environment for the people of Gaza.'
Israel's ambassador to the U.N., Danny Danon, said last week that 'neither international conferences disconnected from reality nor unilateral statements at the UN will lead to peace.'
Then this week, as the international outrage over the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip has continued, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the United Kingdom was ready to recognize Palestine's statehood if Israel does not manage to take action of ending the war with Hamas, a conflict that has been ongoing since the Palestinian militant group's terrorist attack on the Jewish State on Oct. 7, 2023.
Starmer set the deadline for the UN's General Assembly in September, calling for an uptick in aid being delivered into the war-torn enclave and for Hamas to release the remaining hostages.
'I've always said that we will recognize a Palestinian state as a contribution to a proper peace process at the moment of maximum impact for the two-state solution, with that solution now under threat, this is the moment to act,' Starmer said.
Canada became the third close U.S. ally this week to announce it would recognize the Palestinian state.
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa would provide recognition of the state in September at the UN's General Assembly, a decision that would entail the Palestinian Authority 'holding general elections in 2026 in which Hamas can play no part, and to demilitarize the Palestinian state.'
Trump said on Truth Social that Canada's decision would make it hard for the U.S. to reach a trade agreement with Ottawa.
On Monday, the president said that the U.S. would set up 'food centers' in Gaza as food distribution in the enclave has come under intense scrutiny and deaths of Gazans from starvation.
Trump also acknowledged that there is starvation among the roughly 2.1 million population in Gaza, sharing a different view from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said that no one is starving in the enclave.
The White House said on Thursday that Witkoff and U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee would be in Gaza on Friday to 'inspect the current distribution sites and secure a plan to deliver more food and meet with local Gazans to hear first-hand about this dire situation on the ground.'

Kugler to step down from Fed board on Aug. 8, allowing Trump to fill her seat early
Federal Reserve Governor Adriana Kugler said Friday she will resign from the Federal Reserve Board of Governors effective Aug. 8, meaning President Trump could have a replacement in her seat earlier than expected. The term of Kugler, who was appointed by President Biden, was due to expire on Jan. 31. "It has been an honor of a lifetime to serve on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System,' Kugler wrote in a resignation letter to Fed Chair Jerome Powell. 'I am especially honored to have served during a critical time in achieving our dual mandate of bringing down prices and keeping a strong and resilient labor market.' Kugler was not present at this week's meeting of the Fed's Federal Open Market Committee, due to what was described by the Fed as "personal matter." The Fed voted at that meeting to keep rates unchanged and two Fed governors dissented from that decision — the first time that has happened since 1993. Kugler, who has served as a Fed governor since Sept. 13, 2023, also submitted her letter of resignation to Trump. She will return to Georgetown University as a professor this fall. 'I appreciate Dr. Kugler's service on the Board and wish her very well in her future endeavors,' said Powell. 'She brought impressive experience and academic insights to her work on the Board.' Trump and the White House have been considering candidates to replace Powell as chair once the chairman's term ends next May, and one of those names could be appointed to fill Kugler's seat as a prelude to becoming chair. The people that have Trump have considered include National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, former Fed governor Kevin Warsh and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. One sitting Fed governor, Fed governor Christopher Waller, is also considered among the possible choices to replace Powell eventually. Bessent, who is leading the search for Powell's replacement, has already sketched out a scenario where the White House appoints someone to fill Kugler's seat and that person can then be in the running to succeed Powell next May. The White House also hopes that Powell decides to leave the Fed Board of Governors when his chairmanship is up, which would open up a second seat that Trump can fill. Powell has not yet said whether he intends to do that; his term as a Fed governor is up not up until 2028. The opportunity for the White House to fill Kugler's seat earlier than expected comes as Trump applies pressure on Powell and the Fed board to lower rates by as many as 3 percentage points. Trump said in a social media post Friday that the Federal Reserve Board should 'ASSUME CONTROL." The president urged the Fed board, which Powell chairs, to "DO WHAT EVERYONE KNOWS HAS TO BE DONE' if Powell won't support lower interest rates. Waller and Michelle Bowman, the two Fed governors who argued for a quarter percentage point rate reduction at the Fed's last meeting on Wednesday, explained Friday in statements why they broke with Powell. Both cited worries about the labor market as a reason to start cutting again. 'I believe that the wait and see approach is overly cautious, and, in my opinion, does not properly balance the risks to the outlook and could lead to policy falling behind the curve,' Waller said in his statement. The statements from Waller and Bowman came just 30 minutes before July's jobs report released Friday morning, which showed the US economy added fewer jobs than expected last month. Traders raised their odds of a rate cut at the Fed's September meeting to 80% following the release of that weaker-than-expected labor reading, after lowering them below 40% on Thursday. Trump seemed to praise the Fed governors after their statements were released, adding in a separate Truth Social post: 'STRONG DISSENTS ON FED BOARD. IT WILL ONLY GET STRONGER!' There are seven seats on the Fed Board of Governors and all seven hold spots on the FOMC, the powerful body that decides whether rates go up or down. Another five spots on the FOMC are held on a rotating basis by regional Fed presidents who are based around the country. Whoever is US president gets to nominate all Fed governors, who then need Senate approval to be confirmed, and serve 14-year terms while the regional Fed presidents are picked by banks in their districts. Trump spent much of Friday criticizing Powell on social media, even mentioning him in a post about firing the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics following a weak July jobs report. Trump smartly responds to brutal jobs report by firing the job numbers person
Our bold president is changing that outdated form of thinking, instilling in all of us the belief that we can believe whatever we want to believe. In the wake of a brutal report showing U.S. job growth slowing and unemployment rising, President Donald Trump did what any sensible leader would do: He fired the person responsible for the report. I applaud Trump's decision, part of his ongoing war with numbers he doesn't like. For far too long, Americans have allowed 'low' or 'bad' numbers – from grades to bank accounts to performance reviews – to dictate how they feel about themselves. Our bold president is changing that outdated form of thinking, instilling in all of us the belief that we can believe whatever we want to believe, ignoring dumb liberal concepts like 'facts,' 'numbers' and 'reality.' The Aug. 1 jobs report (allegedly) showed that employers added only 73,000 jobs in July. Also, as USA TODAY reported: 'Job gains for May and June were revised down by a whopping 258,000, portraying a much weaker labor market than believed in late spring and early summer.' Opinion: Trump's mental decline is on vivid display as he rages about Epstein, windmills Hours after the jobs report was released, Trump threw Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner Erika McEntarfer metaphorically out the window, writing on Truth Social in a completely sane and rational manner: 'I was just informed that our Country's 'Jobs Numbers' are being produced by a Biden Appointee, Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of Labor Statistics, who faked the Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamala's chances of Victory. This is the same Bureau of Labor Statistics that overstated the Jobs Growth in March 2024 by approximately 818,000 and, then again, right before the 2024 Presidential Election, in August and September, by 112,000. These were Records — No one can be that wrong? We need accurate Jobs Numbers. I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can't be manipulated for political purposes. McEntarfer said there were only 73,000 Jobs added (a shock!) but, more importantly, that a major mistake was made by them, 258,000 Jobs downward, in the prior two months. Similar things happened in the first part of the year, always to the negative. The Economy is BOOMING under 'TRUMP' despite a Fed that also plays games, this time with Interest Rates, where they lowered them twice, and substantially, just before the Presidential Election, I assume in the hopes of getting 'Kamala' elected – How did that work out? I, for one, welcome Trump's era of only believing numbers that are good Those evidence-free claims make perfect sense and sound totally legit. It also does not seem at all hypocritical that the White House, in June, proudly boasted about BLS data showing core inflation holding steady. Those were good numbers, so the people distributing get them get to keep their jobs. Duh. It's high time American numbers and the people who use them recognize they will be held accountable for making President Trump look bad. (I'm looking at you, polling numbers.) The last thing our economy needs is a bunch of negative numbers accurately portraying the state of things. El Salvador ends term limits, letting Bukele seek reelection indefinitely
'It will be the people who decide, as many times as they wish, whether to continue supporting the path of transformation that our nation is experiencing,' Ana Figueroa, the lawmaker who proposed the amendments, wrote on social media Thursday. She noted that lawmakers and local officials, like mayors, do not have term limits. Bukele did not immediately comment on the amendments. Advertisement Many regional experts, human rights groups, and others said they feared the vote represented only the latest move to consolidate power in the hands of Bukele, who has used strongman tactics to crack down on violent street gangs that have long ravaged the country. First elected in 2019, Bukele won a landslide reelection in 2024, riding his enormous popularity for decimating the gangs. He was able to do so in part by declaring a state of emergency that allowed authorities to carry out mass arrests with no due process. Tens of thousands of people were jailed, and rights groups say many of them had no ties to the gangs. Advertisement This year, Bukele's government has escalated a crackdown on civil society groups who have been critical of his tactics. Under the state of emergency, which was extended for the 40th time last month, he has gone after dissidents, carrying out arrests that have prompted some civil rights advocates and journalists to flee. Under Bukele, 44, El Salvador has become one of the safest countries in the region, and the president has dismissed accusations that he has embraced authoritarian tactics. 'I don't care if they call me a dictator,' he said in June. 'I would rather be called 'dictator' than watch them kill Salvadorans in the streets.' Bukele has also positioned himself as Trump's closest partner in Latin America, playing a role in Trump's deportation plans by imprisoning people expelled from the United States. In exchange, Bukele's government has received around $5 million and has sought the return to El Salvador of many top leaders of the MS-13 gang in US custody. US authorities have found substantial evidence of secret negotiations between Bukele's government and MS-13 leaders, and some experts say Bukele may want to bury that evidence by seeking the gang leaders' return. He has denied having any pact with the gangs, casting the blame for gang negotiations on his predecessor. He has, from the start of his political career, styled himself as a clean break from the political parties that had dominated El Salvador since the end of its civil war in the 1990s. He has highlighted his relative youth, embraced social media, and created a team to produce highly stylized photos and videos that show fearsome, tattooed gang members behind bars or in poses of submission. And he has variously described himself as the world's 'coolest dictator' and a 'philosopher king.'
