Jane died at 84 in August 2025Brad Pitt is saying goodbye to his mom, Jane.
In August 2025, PEOPLE confirmed that Brad's mother, Jane Pitt, died at the age of 84.
While the Babylon actor may be an A-lister, his roots can be traced back to the crossroads of America. He was born in Shawnee, Okla., in 1963 to Jane and William Pitt and raised in Springfield, Missouri, with his two siblings, Doug and Julie.
The Academy Award-winning actor's full name, William Bradley Pitt, is a homage to his father. In following his love of acting, it appears Brad embraced the advice of his namesake in blazing his illustrious career path.
Speaking with Parade in 2011, the actor recalled a pivotal lesson he learned from his dad when he wasn't performing well at a tennis tournament. '[My dad] got right up to me and said, 'Are you having fun?' I said, 'No.' And he said, 'Then don't do it,' ' Brad told the outlet.
He continued, "Finding something you love to do has been a big guideline for me. I think it gave me the impetus to move out to California in a beat-up Datsun with a couple hundred dollars in my pocket. It's been the impetus to seek out projects that are important to me."
From their careers to their family, here is everything to know about Brad's parents, William and Jane Pitt.
William and Jane raised Brad in Missouri
William Alvin Pitt and Jane Etta Hillhouse met at Oklahoma Baptist University, per the Oklahoma Historical Society. The couple wed in 1962 and welcomed Brad shortly after.
A few years later, the family relocated to Tulsa and then settled in Springfield, Mo., where Brad and his two younger siblings were raised.
'Well, it was Springfield, Missouri, which is a big place now, but we grew up surrounded by cornfields,' he told GQ in 2017. 'Ten minutes outside of town, you start getting into forests and rivers and the Ozark mountains, stunning country."
The Fight Club star eventually left the city during his last semester at Missouri University, where he was just weeks away from graduating with a bachelor's degree in journalism. Brad's father still lives there today, along with his brother and sister, who also have their own families.
They have three children
After the birth of Brad in 1963, William and Jane welcomed son Doug in 1966 and sister Julie in 1969. Although the eldest Pitt child decided to move to Hollywood, he has maintained a close bond with his siblings, in part due to their shared passions for business and philanthropy.
As Brad was getting his start in the entertainment industry, Doug founded his computer company, ServiceWorld Computer Center, in 1991. Following a merger in 2013, the actor's brother took over the business again in 2017, and today, it's known as the Pitt Technology Group. During this time, Doug also established the real estate business Pitt Development Group in 2014.
Apart from his entrepreneurial endeavors, he founded the organization Care to Learn to help students and has been the Goodwill Ambassador of Tanzania since 2010. Both Doug and Julie are also involved in WorldServe International — which provides aid to populations in Africa — where he's on the board, and she's a water ambassador.
Brad has done his own share of philanthropic work, including when he teamed up with his siblings to donate $1 million to a Missouri hospital in 2009. The funds helped open a new wing named after their mother called the Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center, where the first pediatric oncologist and hematologist were hired in the southwest Missouri region, per CBS.
Speaking with WorldServe International in 2018, Jane opened up about her pride in seeing her kids being there for others.
'I'm very proud of all my children. They see a need and try to step in and fill it,' she said. 'Whether it's a disaster in New Orleans [which Brad helped with], or all the things in Tanzania that Doug does do, or Julie's wonderful, wonderful work in Ethiopia. It's an amazing thing.'
Brad's dad wanted to give him "a better life"
Unlike their famous son, Brad's parents had a more humble work life. As The Sydney Morning Herald reported, William ran a trucking company, and Jane was a school counselor.
Despite moving away from the Midwest in his early 20s, the Seven actor has revisited childhood memories over the years. In an interview with Parade in 2011, he revealed what his dad was like growing up and shared his admiration for him.
"My dad worked five and a half, six days a week [as a trucking company executive], and then he would take us fishing," Brad told the outlet. "He'd do that all weekend, then start work again."
He continued, "I have immense appreciation for that now that I'm a parent, knowing what you have to do to carve out time for your kids. I know how taxing that was on him."
Brad also touched on his home life in a conversation with The New York Times in 2019, sharing that his dad encouraged a "be-capable, be-strong" attitude. The actor later learned that William's perspective was influenced by his own upbringing.
'He had grown up in extreme hardship and poverty, always dead set on giving me a better life than he had — and he did it. But he came from that stoic ilk,' the Fury cast member said.
They've appeared on the red carpet with Brad
Though William and Jane mostly stayed out of the spotlight, they have walked the red carpet with their son.
One of those rare moments happened when Brad, then-wife Angelina Jolie and his parents attended the Oscars together in 2012. During a red carpet interview with CNN, the actor talked about what his family had done that day leading up to the major event, which included biscuits and gravy.
Two years later, Brad's parents also accompanied him for the premiere of the biographical war drama movie Unbroken that Jolie directed but was unable to attend, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Brad and his parents walked the red carpet with three of his kids.
Jane died in August 2025
TMZ was the first to report that Jane had died at 84 after Doug's daughter, Sydney, shared a tribute to her grandmother on Instagram.
Sharing photos of Jane through the years, Sydney wrote, "My sweet Grammy, Jane Etta, we were not ready for you to go yet but knowing you are finally free to sing, dance, and paint again makes it a tad easier."
She went on to describe Jane as someone who "cared deeply for everyone and everything, no questions asked."
"She could keep up with all 14 of us grandkids without missing a beat. There was no limit to the love she gave, and everyone who met her felt it," Sydney wrote.

What Happened Today on Bold and the Beautiful August 8: The Truth In All Grace & Li's Lies
The Bold and the Beautiful recap for Friday, August 8, saw Grace facing Liam's wrath and Sheila discovering Li's shady little secret. What You Missed Today On Bold and the Beautiful Grace's (Cassandra Creech) visit had Liam (Scott Clifton) and Hope (Annika Noelle) terrified for a hot second. Was the cancer back? Is Liam still dying? Imagine their (temporary) relief to hear that no, Liam is good. No tumor here. Wait, no tumor? For a hot second, they took that to mean the cancer was gone and sang Grace's praises. She's a miracle worker! An angel! A saint! A hero!. Imagine their shock when Finn shut that down. No more waxing poetic of the 'good' doc! Imagine their shock when Grace started coming clean. Liam never had cancer. She took the symptoms of his brain bleed and combined them with another patient's scans, and ran with it. She scammed him; she scammed his father. It was all one big lie. WATCH THIS: SoapHub Says! Our newest fun and fabulous podcast episode is here! Liam was flabbergasted. He was so blindsided he couldn't believe it. What does she mean he didn't have brain cancer? He had all the symptoms, and he had the surgeries. Yes, he did. Grace gave him meds to make him sick so she could 'cure' him. It took Hope all of a split second before Hope and Liam realized the reason why – money. Just like Reese did with Beth. The Buckinghams keep torturing them for a cash grab. Furious, Liam went on the attack, which thankfully for Grace, Finn stopped and held him back. Grace then poured out the whole sordid tale. This was all Reese's fault. She did what she did to save her family after Reese's debtors came chasing her and her family. Surely, they must understand, right? Nope. Not at all. Hope lost it and slapped her right across the face and read that doc for filth. There would be no mercy here. Ashamed and frantic, Grace offered to do the right thing and turn herself in. Finn then dragged her off and hauled her off to the police station, leaving Liam and Hope to deal with the aftermath. Bill & Katie Caught Up Meanwhile, over in the design room, Katie (Heather Tom) updated Bill (Don Diamont) about Brooke's (Katherine Kelly Lang) near-death drama…and how it brought her back to Ridge (Thorsten Kaye). Surprisingly, Dollar Bill wasn't that upset to hear his ex was getting back with her ex. He was much too worried about Liam to care about what Brooke was up to. Bill opened up about how things played out for Liam. Grace saved his life, thanks to a million-dollar surgery. Katie was on edge over that collosal number, but to Bill, it was just money. Money that saved his son. He would gladly open up his bank account over and over for his children. Look at him having his priorities in order! He's such a good man now. If only he could turn back time and fix all his mistakes. MORE: How will Ridge deal with the mess he's made? Find out here! Sheila & Li Repeated History At the same time, Sheila (Kimberlin Brown) continued needling Li (Naomi Matsuda) for answers about Luna (Lisa Yamada), which, of course, Li wasn't about to spill. It didn't matter how much Sheila railed against her. Eventually, Li stormed off to get away from the interrogation. Unfortunately, she didn't pick up all those vials that scattered out of her purse and when Sheila saw one, she heard those all-too-familiar alarm bells ringing in her head. Suspicious and undettered, Sheila followed Li home. Li tried to shut her out when she opened the door, but Sheila is one tough cookie. 'I know what you're doing,' she seethed. Funny enough, Sheila didn't assume Li was hiding Luna, she thought she was hiding an addition and pretended to leave when Li balked. It was a trick, though, and when Li backed off for a split second, Sheila got through the door. Once inside, Sheila slammed back the curtain and saw her precious granddaughter. She was alive! She's not okay but at least she's alive. Sheila broke down in tears of joy. Solve the daily Crossword

John Cena Shares the One Regret He Has About His Hair Transplant (Exclusive)
The wrestler-actor tells PEOPLE the surgery "completely changed the course of my life"NEED TO KNOW John Cena opens up in PEOPLE's cover story about undergoing a hair transplant He shares the one thing he would do differently regarding the decision The WWE superstar is currently on his farewell tour as he nears retirement from the ring. He's also starring as Peacemaker in the HBO Max series, returning Aug. 21John Cena has a whole new perspective after undergoing a hair transplant in November 2024. In a candid interview in this week's cover story, the wrestler-actor, 48, gets vulnerable about a topic most shy away from: hair loss. He admits he started taking his hair health seriously after a push from his WWE fans. "They've held me accountable. They don't let you get away with phoning it in, because they'll eat you alive," he says. "That's what a good support system does." 'As I was trying to hide my hair loss, the audience was bringing it to light," he continues. "I saw their signs that said 'The bald John Cena.' They pushed me into going to see what my options were and actually do some homework to learn about scalp health, hair health, follicle health. I now have a routine: red-light therapy, minoxidil, vitamins, shampoo, conditioner and I also got a hair transplant." He's quick to clarify he doesn't consider anything the fans did as "bullying." "Just like a good friend, when you have something in your teeth, they pull you aside and are like, 'You have something in your teeth,' " he says. Cena loves his new look but only has one regret: "I hate the fact that if there wasn't so much shame around it, I'd have gotten it done 10 years ago," he says. "I thought I was alone, but seven or eight out of 10 [men] suffer from thinning or baldness." He pauses to remark how 'fired up' he gets about the topic. "They don't do anything except move your hair, one by one, from one area to another. It's my hair and I'm not using this stuff [on the side] and I'd like to put it up [on the top]," he says. "If somebody's going to sweat me for that, I don't think there's any shame in that. It completely changed the course of my life.' After his surgery in November, he notes there was a tough period when progress was slow to show. "I came back for the [WWE] retirement tour starting in January — these are the deets you guys don't know — there's what's called a dormant phase, where the little hair [that was left] falls asleep and the new hair falls asleep. So boy, do you get bald," he says. "And January, February, early March was my dormant phase. And boy, did [the fans] let me have it. So every day I knew I went out there with so much more of a bald spot. It was not easy." He still has about five or six months in his growth cycle until he'll fully praise his doctor publicly, but he's passionate about sharing his story in the hopes that it helps others. "There's definitely a lot of folks out there that are wearing that blanket of shame where, man, maybe you don't want to shave your head. And if this resonates with anybody out there and they're like, 'Man, I'd like to research that too,' then cool. Maybe we have curbed the shame and the guilt about somebody wanting to correct themselves." He's also appreciative his new look will give him more range as an actor. "A different hairstyle can identify a part that can get me more work, do the thing I love to do," he says. "So I can continue to follow my passion just by moving [my hair] up here." He's equally passionate about sun safety — he revealed his past skin cancer diagnosis in March and recently had his third spot removed. 'I know, eventually, we're all going to close our book, but if a little bit of sunscreen and a little bit of minoxidil, some vitamins, is going to keep me feeling pretty good and keep my health — those are good things,' he says. 'I love life, and I got love in my life, and I want to keep all that stuff.' The love in his life these days includes wife Shay Shariatzadeh, an engineer he met while watching the Super Bowl in Vancouver in 2019. 'My health and my dedication to my partner are the tip of my spear in life right now," he says. Fans can still see Cena hitting the WWE ring ahead of his retirement by the end of the year. He's also reprising his role as Peacemaker in season 2 of the hit HBO Max show of the same name, premiering Aug. 21. 'It's a great show that's more than just action. It's a love story. It's a workplace comedy. We're the long shots, the lovable losers," he says of the series. He and costars Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Holland 'support each other and allow each other to take big swings. It's fun.' Peacemaker season 2 premieres August 21 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max. ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' Continues Big Box Office Dive With 61% Drop
Disney and Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps — which had a steep drop in business in its second Friday to Sunday frame — is continuing its big box office dive in its third weekend in theaters. The third and Marvel Cinematic Universe release in 2025 after Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four: First Steps found solid footing in its opening weekend in theaters July 25-27 with a domestic take of $115.6 million. The film's second weekend, Aug. 1-3 proved disastrous, however, as the film's $38.6 million domestic tally marked a 67% drop in business. Any hope for a turnaround in the film's third Friday to Sunday for The Fantastic Four quickly dissipated this weekend, though, as Deadline released its projections for the Aug. 8-10 North American box office. As of Saturday, the trade publication projected that The Fantastic Four: First Steps will earn $15 million from 3,600 North American theaters, marking a 61% drop from last weekend's already ailing numbers. Should the $15 million projection by Deadline hold, it will boost The Fantastic Four: First Steps' domestic tally to $229.9 million. The Fantastic Four: First Steps, per Variety, had a production budget of $200 million-plus before prints and advertisting costs. 'Superman's' Business Only Drops 41% In Weekend No. 5 The Fantastic Four: First Steps' main competitor for the top-grossing superhero movie of 2025 — James Gunn's Superman — is projected to make $7.8 million in its fifth weekend in theaters following its opening on July 11. The projected tally marks a $43% drop in business from the film's fourth weekend in theaters. Should Deadline's projection hold, this weekend's box office will boost Superman's domestic take to $331.2 million. Given Superman's solid hold at the box office and The Fantastic Four's downhill slide, DC Studios' Man of Steel film is poised to handily defeat the latest MCU chapter by the time each film wraps its theatrical run. The Fantastic Four: First Steps' drop to third place at the domestic box office comes in the wake of the strong performances of two newcomers — the Warner Bros. horror thriller Weapons and Disney's Freaky Friday sequel Freakier Friday. Weapons is projected by Deadline to earn anywhere from $40 million to $43 million in its opening weekend, while the trade publication pegs a $30 million to $32 million first frame for Freakier Friday. The final numbers for this weekend's box office will be released on Monday.
