Costco to move in after Washington Mall's demolition

CBS News13-03-2025

Once the old Washington Mall is torn down, Costco will become the anchor tenant.
When Costco takes over the property, which has been empty for more than a decade, it will be one of the biggest stores in southwest Pennsylvania, bringing hundreds of new jobs to the area.
"Everyone in the area is pumped up for it," said Washington County Commissioner Nick Sherman.
It was the toughest secret to keep, according to Sherman.
"We talk about feasibility studies. Costco is going to come in with their corporate offices and they're going to see will the market support this. They've done that and they're saying yes," Sherman said.
"It speaks volumes of the economic success that we're having here in Washington County," he added.
The news comes two weeks after commissioners announced plans to tear down the former mall that closed 11 years ago. Costco will be a key part in its redevelopment, done entirely with money from the American Rescue Plan Act, and it will bring hundreds of jobs with a starting average wage of $30 per hour with benefits.
"We wanted to be a better steward of the taxpayers' dollars. We want to make sure that we're capitalizing investments," Sherman said.
"The local operators union is going to be doing work on this to demo this, IBEW, Steelworkers, everyone's going to be building this building and demoing this building. In addition to that, in perpetuity, Costco is a great employer and they pay a great wage," Sherman said.
KDKA-TV caught up with people who say they can't wait for Costco.
"I'm very excited about it. I'm from Kirkland, Washington, and that's where Costco originated and I used it on the reg, so hopefully it'll get here soon," one person said.
"I have a big family so having Sam's Club over there actually and just another big membership store would be wonderful. I'd probably have both memberships," another said.
Demolition is set to start in the early summer.

First day at Costco food court almost sends new hire running for the door

When it comes to the service industry, there may be no busier place at any given time than a Costco food court. One Reddit user's recent post recalled his first day on the job and how he wanted to quit. Reddit user "Ok-Development4027" shared his experience on a page dedicated to conversations about Costco. "First day working at Costco food court I want to quit," he titled a post that quickly received more than 1,000 comments and counting. The 21-year-old employee said he attended an orientation that "went smooth[ly]" the day before his Friday shift. When it came time to work his first shift from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., he admitted that he thought the 8-hour schedule, which included a 30-minute break, "was already a lot for my first day, but I brushed it off." He quickly realized he was "in for a ride" once he started. The new food court employee noted that the customer flow "was steady since the morning, then later in the day it got worse and worse." He said he wasn't sure what his role was. By 6 p.m. or 7 p.m., he said, he "wanted to walk out" because "it was nonstop hectic." He compared himself to "a zoo animal being watched by all the customers on the inside as I try to move as fast as I can." The novice employee pointed out that there's "like a whole pizza being sold every 2 minutes and I think I might quit." He went on to say that he wasn't sure what his role was – "they tell me I'm a closer, yet I was [there] in the morning doing prep stuff." "Nonetheless, it was extremely overwhelming for my first day [there] and it might be it." Commenters were mostly encouraging, telling him that things would get better and to stick with it. "Jobs can often be overwhelming the first few days," one person wrote. "Roll with it the best you can and by next week you'll be a pro. You got this." "Some jobs aren't for everyone." "Just remember that EVERYONE there, especially the hiring manager, wants you to make it and become a superstar," another user remarked. Other users, however, said it's OK to quit. "Agree – but if you hate it in 3 weeks, give your notice and find one that works," wrote one person. "And some jobs aren't for everyone," said another commenter. "Perfectly fine if this dude wants to go find a new job." One commenter who claimed to have once worked as a Costco food court manager didn't seem surprised by the employee's story. "We'd hire three [people] at a time," the person wrote. "There was always one [who] would quit by the end of the first week." For more Lifestyle articles, visit The employee, who wrote in an update that it "just felt like it was never going to end," revealed in the comments a few days later that this was his "first intense food service job," but he eventually felt more comfortable working behind the counter. "I ended up staying and feel like I'm getting better and the hang of it." Fox News Digital reached out to Costco and Ok-Development4027 for further comment.

Jim Cramer Notes Costco Stock 'Failed to Go Up'

Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ:COST) is one of the 14 stocks on Jim Cramer's radar. While discussing Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ:COST), Cramer said: 'And look, this is not isolated to tech. In retail, we had terrific names that reported great quarters, Costco and TJX, but then they failed to go up. Wow. They went down… It's all rotation from companies that are excellent to ones with stocks that got too cheap. We'll be safe if the market returns to Costco and TJX.' Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ:COST) operates membership-based warehouses and provides a broad assortment of branded and private-label products, including groceries, electronics, appliances, apparel, and home goods. Additionally, the company offers in-store and online services such as pharmacies, food courts, and travel. During an episode of Squawk on the Street aired in April, Cramer commented: 'When I listened to that I said okay now I know why Kroger goes up every day. Now I know why Costco's strong. There, Scott Boatwright had a very, this was the Chipotle call, it was a very straightforward call basically just saying, they didn't mention the actual price of different things, but people would rather just have a couple of meals at home. Where it's just cheaper.' While we acknowledge the potential of COST as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. This contributed to its net income of $1.7 billion, which is 2% higher than what it earned during the same quarter a year ago. Costco even outperformed its competitors by drawing in higher levels of foot traffic during the quarter. While Costco's foot traffic climbed by 6% year-over-year, Sam's Club's only increased by 2.7% and BJ's spiked by 4%, according to recent data from Image source: VIEWpress/Getty Images As Costco welcomes new members to its warehouses, it reportedly plans to launch a generous new deal next week that targets members who are frustrated with their current phone plans. According to a recent report from Costco Insider, Costco's July 2025 Coupon Book will feature a deal that offers members $450 if they switch to T-Mobile (TMUS) and purchase/activate a new phone on either its Experience More or Experience Beyond plan. Related: Costco quietly limits customer purchases of a beloved product Members who switch from AT&T, Verizon, Xfinity, Spectrum, USCellular, Claro, or Liberty Puerto Rico will receive a $200 Costco Shop card and a $250 Virtual Visa prepaid card, equivalent to $450. Customers can even stack the deal, meaning they can receive up to 12 $200 Costco Shop cards and a maximum of four $250 Visa cards if they add 12 lines to the account. The promotion is valid between June 18 and July 20. Costco's upcoming deal comes amid an exodus of T-Mobile phone customers after the provider implemented a series of price hikes. The phone carrier revealed in its first-quarter earnings report for 2025 that the number of customers who cut their phone service increased by 5 basis points year-over-year. Also, while T-Mobile added 495,000 new postpaid phone customers during the quarter, that number is 6% lower than the amount it welcomed during the same time period last year. More Retail: Costco quietly plans to offer a convenient service for customersT-Mobile pulls the plug on generous offer, angering customersKellogg sounds alarm on unexpected shift in customer behavior During an earnings call in April, T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert said the recent spike in churn is mainly due to consumers becoming more nervous about the state of the economy. "So overall, you saw across the industry churn was just on the margin a little elevated, and I think there's a number of dynamics there," said Sievert during the call. "That probably has more to do with kind of macro questions than with competition. You know, I think there's a certain element out there where people are in a time of uncertainty about the future, grabbing what they can afford now. And so you're seeing [more customer] upgrades and switching." Amid this concerning trend, many consumers have been flocking to cable companies to sign up for phone plans. Spectrum, Comcast, and Altice USA have added 886,000 new phone customers during the first three months of 2025, which is up from the 804,000 it added during the same time period last year, according to a recent report from MoffettNathanson.
