Gossip mill: K-stars roasted for making their mums wash dishes, Sammo Hung opens Douyin account, K-pop girl group's bodyguard chokes and shoves fan
Being a manchild is never a good look.
NCT's Doyoung made an appearance on the Korean reality show I Live Alone recently, and a segment of him visiting his parents' home was shown.
The 29-year-old idol can be seen making noodles and dumping the dishes in the sink, saying: "If I leave them like this, Mum will wash up for me."
Some of the show's hosts laughed, but Jun Hyun-moo revealed something more egregious: "Sometimes, when I know my mum will be visiting, I'll just let the dishes pile up."
Im Woo-il called the 47-year-old "the most unfilial person" he'd spoken to in a while, while Park Na-rae called him an ingrate.
As Hyun-moo tried to defend himself by gassing up his mum's grease-removal skills, Shinee's Key proclaimed that this offence was worth "20 slaps".
Hyun-moo then dug his hole further by saying his mother is "better than a dishwasher" and Doyoung backed him up, saying mums are "just different" when washing dishes.
Woo-il and Na-rae remained unmoved.
Korean netizens were even harsher to Hyun-moo online, with a thread on the anonymous forum Theqoo calling them out.
"To Korean men, women are just home appliances," a comment read.
A netizen pointed out: "Isn't Jun Hyun-moo's mum at grandma-age by now?".
Doyoung was also not exempt from criticism, with a netizen writing that leaving the dishes for your mum after cooking at her place was "just messed up".

Sammo Hung remains hip and with the times even at 73.
The veteran Hong Kong actor and martial artist started a Douyin account recently, and has amassed an impressive over 760,000 followers since his first post on June 5.
In one video, he shared "60 years of wisdom" among a series of clips from his movies.
"Failure is not frightening, it's the fear of failure that's truly daunting," he mused. "Failure is just a temporary setback, perseverance is the eternal attitude!"
Ahead of Father's Day on Sunday, he posted a video with his son Timmy. Also included was a portrait of the three generations of his family: Him and his wife, Timmy and his wife and their two sons. K-pop girl group's bodyguard chokes and shoves fan
A security staff member accompanying the new SM Entertainment girl group Hearts2Hearts is being called out for employing excessive force against a fan.
In a video posted on TikTok by user Sovvsovv0, the bodyguard can be seen choking a fan with his arm and shoving her as the idols were headed into a train at an airport.
On Korean anonymous forum Theqoo, netizens were alarmed by the incident, writing: "They're not bodyguards, they're just thugs."
The original video has since been removed from TikTok and replaced by ones praising the man for his actions, claiming the woman was a sasaeng (obsessive fan).
Another video by the same user shows the woman bumping into Hearts2Hearts member Ian, seemingly in a bid to photograph another member.
@sovvsovv0 [english ver] So the girl who was held back by the bodyguard was actually a SASAENG (obsessive fan/stalker), not an ordinary civilian. That means the bodyguard was not at fault! He was simply doing his job — protecting the idol #hearts2hearts #하츠투하츠 #H2H ♬ somebody pleasure x angel baby - fdill
Yet, some Korean netizens remained unimpressed.
"Even if she was a sasaeng , choking and shoving someone like that is unbelievable," a comment read.

Is your underwear showing? For K-pop idols, that's the point
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox A fashion trend known as sagging is making a comeback among young K-pop idols. SEOUL - In today's K-pop scene, showing one's underwear is no longer likely to be a wardrobe malfunction. It is a fashion statement. A fashion trend known as sagging, where pants are worn low enough to reveal the waistband of one's undergarments, is making a comeback among young K-pop idols. The look was once popular in the 1990s and early 2000s, often associated with the Y2K era. Many from that time still remember it vividly. 'I remember Justin Bieber always wearing his pants this way in paparazzi shots. I used to mimic the look, but it wasn't easy,' said Mr Park Jung-min, 34. 'I walked uncomfortably.' Back then, some Koreans who disliked the trend jokingly said it looked like someone had pooped their pants. Many millennials of the time referred to it as the 'poop-in-the-pants look.' However, the revival is now unmistakable. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. A new name may help Hong Kong curb its youth drug crisis Fashion icon Jennie of Blackpink embraced the look with a red cropped top and black parachute pants, finishing the outfit with matching red underwear that peeked out above her pants. Aespa's Karina and Giselle also styled their outfits to leave the elastic band or lace trim of their panties visible, a move that quickly went viral with fans. Natty, of girl group Kiss of Life, also joined the trend, posting a photo on the group's Instagram with her pants unbuttoned to reveal part of her underwear's waistband. But perhaps the boldest take on the look comes from Tarzzan of boy band All Day Project. Known for his experimental style, he has been spotted multiple times layering underwear in contrasting prints, sometimes even matching them to his outerwear. While it is clear that the trend is circulating among K-pop idols, not everyone is sold. 'If a celebrity wears it, it's fashion. If a regular person does it, it just looks weird,' reads one online comment under an article introducing the trend. Another was more blunt, saying: 'If someone showed up dressed like that in real life? I'd think they lost their mind.' However, the broader 'underwear-as-fashion' movement seems to be gaining traction, especially when it comes to tops that resemble camisoles. On Instagram, Rose of Blackpink recently posted photos wearing a lace camisole, channelling the 'underwear, but make it fashion' vibe. 'We're seeing more Gen Z consumers embrace underwear not just for its function, but as a styling piece like Rose,' a fashion industry insider told The Korea Herald. According to Korean fashion firm E-Land World, sales from January to July in the homewear category of its women's lingerie brand Evelyn, which includes stylish, lingerie-inspired clothing, rose nearly tenfold compared to the same period in 2024 . Singer Park Bom to step down from K-pop girl group 2NE1's activities due to health concerns
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Concerns about Park's health and her ability to continue group activities have been raised in recent months. SEOUL - South Korean singer Park Bom, a member of 2NE1, will not be participating in the K-pop girl group's upcoming activities due to health issues, her agency announced on Aug 6. 'Park Bom will not be able to join 2NE1's future schedule,' D-Nation Entertainment said via social media. 'Upon receiving medical advice recommending sufficient rest and stability, we reached this decision after careful discussions.' 'We ask for your warm support for Park Bom's recovery, and we would be grateful if you could also cheer on Sandara Park, CL and Minzy, who will do their best to fill the void,' the company added, referring to the remaining three members. Concerns about Park's health and her ability to continue group activities have been raised in recent months. The 41-year-old has alarmed fans by posting heavily filtered selfies and making unverified personal claims online - including saying she is dating South Korean actor Lee Min-ho - raising questions about her mental health. She also abruptly cancelled her appearance at music festival Waterbomb Busan 2025 on July 26, an unusual move in the tightly scheduled world of K-pop, where same-day cancellations are rare. 2NE1 are also part of the line-up on the second day of Waterbomb Singapore 2025, scheduled to be held on Aug 30 and 31 at Sentosa. They performed two nights at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in December that year as part of their Welcome Back Tour, which kicked off in Seoul in October. 2NE1, who debuted in 2009, disbanded in November 2016 after Minzy quit in April that year. They surprised fans by reuniting in 2022 to perform at music festival Coachella in the United States. Park took a break from music activities in late February and March 2025, but returned for 2NE1's two encore concerts in Seoul in April. However, she was absent again during their set at the Head In The Clouds music festival in Los Angeles in June. THE KOREA HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Which Korean books are winning over readers abroad?
August 7, 2025 SEOUL – Sales of Korean literature abroad more than doubled in 2024, driven by a wave of international enthusiasm and a historic Nobel Prize win by Han Kang, according to new data released by the Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI Korea) on Wednesday. Books supported by LTI Korea's translation and publication grants sold about 1.2 million copies abroad last year, a jump of more than 130 percent from 520,000 in 2023. The survey also showed that between 2020 and 2024, 942 titles across 40 languages sold a cumulative 2.68 million copies — up 730,000 from the previous five-year period (2019-2023). Both the number of titles released and overall sales soared in 2024. The average number of copies sold per book hit a record high of 1,271, with 45 titles surpassing 5,000 copies and 24 exceeding 10,000. Among the bestsellers were Han Kang's 'Greek Lessons' (English), Kim Ji-yun's 'Yeonnam-dong's Smiley Laundromat' (English), Park So-young's 'Snowglobe' (English), Lee Mi-ye's 'The Dallergut Dream Department Store' (French), Kim Ho-yeon's 'The Second Chance Convenience Store' (German) and Son Won-pyung's 'The Majestic Fox Tail' (Russian). Several titles have established themselves as steady sellers, including Bora Chung's 'Cursed Bunny' (English), Park Sang-young's 'Love in the Big City' (English) and Cho Nam-ju's 'Kim Ji-young, Born 1982' (German), each selling more than 4,000 copies annually for three consecutive years. Healing fiction continued to show strong growth in overseas markets. Korean runaway bestsellers like 'The Second Chance Convenience Store,' 'The Dallergut Dream Department Store' and 'Marigold Mind Laundry' have steadily built wide readerships abroad, said an LTI Korea official. In Turkey, 'Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop' sold over 80,000 copies in 2024 alone, while in Poland, over 20,000 copies of 'The Second Chance Convenience Store' were sold. Genre literature also made gains. The German edition of the first book in Lee Yeong-do's 'Bird That Drinks Tears' series sold more than 20,000 copies, while Keum Suk Gendry-Kim's graphic novel 'Grass' (Spanish) has surpassed 10,000 annual sales for three years running. Han's Nobel win in 2024 proved a decisive catalyst for Korean literature's global reach, according to LTI Korea. Han's works, translated into 28 languages and published in 77 editions with LTI Korea support, sold approximately 310,000 copies last year alone. Interest extended beyond her latest releases: Annual overseas sales of her pre-2023 titles jumped fivefold, from about 30,000 copies in 2023 to 150,000 in 2024.
