
No more fake colours in American ice cream
The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), which includes over 40 top ice cream brands, said its members would stop using petroleum-derived synthetic colourings by the end of 2027.
These chemicals have been linked in studies to conditions including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cancer, diabetes, gastrointestinal issues, and genomic disruption, yet serve no nutritional or functional purpose beyond cosmetic coloring, health advocates have long argued.
"I'm particularly happy to be here today because this is relevant to my favourite food, which is ice cream," Kennedy said at a press event, lauding the dairy industry for its actions.
"This is a great day for dairy and it's a great day for Make America Healthy Again," added the IDFA's President and CEO Michael Dykes, referencing Kennedy's MAHA slogan that is a play on President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" or MAGA.
Andy Jacobs, CEO of Turkey Hill, said many commercial ice cream manufacturers had already phased out artificial colours or were in the process of doing so.
"By taking this step now, ice cream manufacturers are ensuring that ice cream remains a special part of our lives as consumer preferences change and the nation's regulatory priorities evolve," he said.
Industry data shows Americans consume roughly 19 pounds (8.6 kg) of ice cream a year. The frozen treat contributes an estimated $12 billion to the economy and supports more than 27,000 dairy industry jobs.
In April, Kennedy announced plans to revoke authorisation for two synthetic dyes and to "work with industry" to eliminate six more — an approach critics dismissed as too soft and overly reliant on voluntary action.

Global hunger fell slightly in 2024 but still saw between 638 and 720 million people suffering food shortages with rising numbers in Africa, a UN report said Monday. Around 8.2 percent of the world's population faced hunger last year, a fall of 0.3 percent compared to 2023, according to The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, compiled by multiple United Nations agencies including the Food and Agriculture Organization and World Food Programme. But a major drop in Latin America and the Caribbean was balanced against a worsening situation in Africa, where the figure is 20.2 percent. The report, released at the UN Food Systems Summit in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, highlights how far the organisation is from meeting its goal of ending world hunger by 2030. Current projections suggest some 512 million people will still be undernourished by the end of the decade, 60 percent of them in Africa, the report said. "Global hunger figures have slightly improved compared to 2022 and 2023," Alvaro Lario, president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, told AFP. "But we have not come back to the levels of five years ago. This isn't very good news." Four of the worst five countries for food security are in Africa: Nigeria, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia. The report also highlights the situation in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip, where the entire population is experiencing severe acute insecurity. "Lack of access has been ongoing for some months now and we are now seeing people starving," Lario said. "Access must be granted to provide life-saving humanitarian aid urgently," he added. Ghana records first Mpox death as cases surge
ACCRA: Ghana has recorded its first death from Mpox, health authorities confirmed Sunday, amid a sharp rise in new infections in the West African country. Twenty-three new cases have been confirmed in the past week, bringing the total number of infections to 257 since the virus was first detected in Ghana in June 2022. The latest figure marks the highest weekly increase since the outbreak began and the first fatality recorded in the country. Health minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh told AFP 'that the situation is under control.' Mpox, previously known as Monkeypox, is a viral infection related to smallpox, causing fever, body aches and distinct skin lesions and can be deadly. A Ghanaian government agency responsible for public health is expected to receive vaccines from the World Health Organization this week. 'Our at-risk populations have already been identified, and we are ready to roll out vaccination as soon as doses arrive,' a director with the service, Franklyn Asiedu-Bekoe, told AFP. The outbreak in Ghana mirrors a broader trend across West Africa, where health officials are struggling to contain the disease. Thousands of cases have been recorded this year in the region, with Sierra Leone registering a total of 3,350 cases, including 16 deaths - from January to late May of this year. Elsewhere thousands more cases have also been detected this year across DR Congo, Uganda and Burundi, according to WHO. Africa CDC figures released last week show over 47,000 confirmed cases and 221 deaths reported across the continent since January last year. At least 27,000 of those cases were recorded this year alone. Last month WHO director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the virus remains an international health emergency amid the rise in West African cases.

Taliban say detained British couple receiving medical care
An elderly British couple detained for months in Afghanistan are receiving medical care, the Taliban government's top diplomat said Wednesday, after UN experts warned they were at risk of dying. Peter and Barbie Reynolds, 80-years-old and 75-years-old, had lived in Afghanistan for 18 years when they were arrested in February along with Chinese-American friend Faye Hall, who has since been released, and an Afghan translator. "All their human rights are being respected," Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi told a news conference in the capital Kabul. "They are being provided with medical care. They are in occasional contact with their families." Muttaqi said "efforts are underway to secure their release, but the process is not complete", echoing similar comments by the government in April. Independent United Nations experts warned on Monday of the "rapid deterioration" of their physical and mental health, stating that they "risk irreparable harm or even death". The couple, against whom no charges have been brought, were held "in a high-security facility for several months, then in underground cells, without daylight, before being transferred last week" to the intelligence services in Kabul, according to the UN.
