Day after Tamil Nadu accident, Ashwini Vaishnaw directs CCTV system at all level crossings with recorders
Along with this, the traffic volume threshold for interlocking works has been lowered to 10,000, so that more level crossings can be equipped with interlocking facilities.
Officials said that Vaishnaw reviewed the critical railway safety matters, where a decision was taken to implement 11 key actions regarding the level crossings.
'Now, all LC (level crossing) gates will be covered with CCTV systems, so that such incidents can be avoided. It will be implemented in priority mode. The power supply to CCTV will be based on solar panels, battery back-up, UPS, etc in addition to commercial supply,' said a senior Railway Ministry official.
The official also said that the interlocking of level crossing gates will be done in fast-track mode.
'Currently, in those level crossings, where the interlocking system is not available, the green signal to the train is given in the direction of the station master. Due to this, many times the train starts moving without the level crossing gate being closed. Thus, the risk of accidents increases. After the interlocking system is in place, the train will not get the green signal unless the level crossing gate is closed. The Minister has directed to involve PSUs of Railways for interlocking works,' said the official.
Under the existing policy, the interlocking of level crossing gates was done where traffic volume or Train Vehicle Unit (TUV) was 20,000. Now this threshold has been lowered to 10,000 TVU, which will cover more level crossings for interlocking works. TUV is a key factor in determining whether a level crossing qualifies for replacement with a Road Over Bridge (ROB) or Road Under Bridge (RUB).
'All gates above 10,000 TVU will be interlocked irrespective of ROB/RUB/LHS plans. All these works will be done with the existing budget, no additional allocation has been made. For non-interlocked gates, a daily random check of voice recordings will be done, at least 2 gates per day per division. Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs) will confirm that the Voice logger system is functional at all non-interlocked gates,' said the official.
The decision taken in the review meeting also includes standardisation and correction of speed breakers and warning boards at all level crossing gates.
'It was also decided that a list of conflict-prone gates, where public pressures or manhandling happens, will be made and RPF/Home Guard deployment will be ensured. A 15-day safety inspection drive on level crossing gates in block sections will start from tomorrow,' said the official.
According to the Railways' annual plan for 2025-25, a total of ` 706 crore has been allocated for safety works of level crossings and `7,000 crore for ROBs/RUBs. As on April 1, 2024, there were a total of 17,083 manned level crossings, of which 497 manned level crossings were eliminated up to January, 2025 in the last FY.
Under the National Rail Plan, all level crossings are to be replaced with grade separators in phased manner by 2030 on routes envisaged for operation of passenger trains with speed 160-200 kmph.

RPF's cyber cell tracks, recovers lost mobiles
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The cyber cell of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the South Central Railway (SCR) has dealt with 169 complaints of stolen mobiles in July. Out of these complaints, the cell blocked 139 mobile phones, traced 52 devices, recovered 21 mobile phoned and returned 9 phones to the owners, show official data. "The RPF of SCR has intensified its efforts under 'Operation Amanat' by effectively leveraging digital tools to trace and recover lost mobile phones. Through the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal, the Cyber Cell has been driving the recovery operations across the zone," said A Sridhar, chief public relations officer of SCR. SCR authorities said the RPF is authorized to facilitate the recovery of lost devices only when the incident is reported and registered through Rail Madad, and no FIR has been lodged by the complainant in the case. "The CEIR portal enables IMEI-based tracking and blocking of lost or stolen devices. However, it is the RPF's dedicated Cyber Cell that has been leading mobile recovery efforts across the zone," Sridhar said. Vijayawada RPF, GRP rescue child sold into begging network
Vijayawada: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Govt Railway Police (GRP) at Vijayawada rescued a three-year-old girl from landing in a begging mafia network after she was sold for 5,000 by her father to a woman beggar. The police rescued the child from an APSRTC bus while she was being taken to Rajamahendravaram to be used for begging by the accused. The police arrested the accused father, identified as Saikam Masthan (35), a native of Vetapalem in Bapatla district, along with Bolla Srinivasulu (44), a buttermilk seller at Vijayawada railway station, and Sadela Chinnari (28), a beggar, who purchased the child. They were sent to judicial remand. "Two separate teams, including GRP Vijayawada and RPF police personnel, were formed to trace the child after her father filed a complaint with the GRP police stating that his three-year-old daughter was abducted by an unidentified couple near the reservation counter at platform 1 of the Vijayawada railway station on Thursday night," Vijayawada GRP SHO JV Ramana said. "Looking at the suspicious conduct of the child's father, Masthan, we summoned his wife, Venkateswaramma, and it was revealed that Masthan was living separately from the family for the past four months. He went to his native place in Vetapalem and forcefully abducted his daughter, who was under her mother's supervision, four days ago and sold her for Rs 5,000 to the accused," the SHO said. Based on a complaint given by Venkateswaramma, a case under sections 137(2), 139(1) & (3), 143(2) & (4) R/w 3(5) of BNS and Sec 81 of the Juvenile Justice Act 2015 was registered. Probe is underway. Police rescue baby hours after father sells her away for ₹5,000 to a couple
In a shocking incident, a three-year-old baby girl, Sravani, was allegedly sold away by her father, who later reportedly played a kidnap drama. However, swift action by the railway police helped save the baby within a few hours, and restore her to her mother. The accused, Saikam Mastan of Vetapalem village, Bapatla district, reportedly sold away the baby for ₹5,000 to a live-in couple Bolla Srinivasulu of Vemavaram village, Prakasam district, and Sadela Chinnari of Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district on Thursday night at the Vijayawada railway station. Srinivasulu is a buttermilk vendor in the railway station and his partner a beggar, according to the railway police. They were caught along with the baby while on their way to Rajahmundry. 'The accused planned to maim the baby and use her to seek alms. Police personnel rescued the baby in just a few hours after the sale and safely handed her over to her mother,'' said Government Railway Police (GRP) Circle Inspector J.V. Ramana, at a press conference here on Friday. ''All the three accused were arrested,'' Railway Protection Force (RPF) inspector Ali Baig said. After selling away the baby Mastan consumed liquor and bought clothes with the money. At 10.30 p.m., he lodged a complaint with the GRP station, alleging that some miscreants had kidnapped his daughter near the waiting hall. Immediately, the GRP and the RPF personnel formed special teams and verified the CCTV footages in the railway station. 'We noticed that the accused took the baby to Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS), from where they boarded a bus to Rajahmundry. Police alerted the bus driver, Yerramsetti Vara Prasad, who confirmed that the couple was travelling in the bus with the baby,' said Mr. Ramana. The police teams alerted the Rajahmundry GRP CI, P. Srinivas, who intercepted the bus on the outskirts and took the accused into custody. When the GRP officers contacted the baby's mother, S. Venkateswaramma, she alleged that her husband had forcibly taken away the baby two days ago, and that they were searching for them. 'During questioning, Mastan confessed to have taken ₹5,000 from the other two accused. A sum of ₹1,850 has been seized from him,' Mr. Ali Baig said. A case under Section 143 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (human trafficking), and Section 81 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, has been registered against the accused, Mr. Ramana said, adding that the accused would be produced in a court.
