ISL will take place this year, new India coach in 10 days: Kalyan Chaubey

India Today2 days ago
The All India Football Federation President, Kalyan Chaubey, has assured that the Indian Super League (ISL), which has been put on hold, will take place this year. However, Chaubey didn't specify a start date for the top-tier competition. The AIFF President also said that a decision on the new India coach will be made in the next 10 days. The ISL organisers, FSDL on July 11 announced that it had put the 2025-26 season on hold due to the uncertainty surrounding the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) signed with the AIFF 15 years ago. The league normally runs from September to April and the current MRA between FSDL and the AIFF was until December this year. By this time, the 2025-26 season would have been in its third month. advertisementFollowing a directive from the Supreme Court, the AIFF was told not to negotiate new terms of the MRA with FSDL, until a final judgment is delivered in the AIFF draft constitution case. The Supreme Court is expected to make the judgement soon.
Chaubey said that time will be of the essence and said the AIFF and all the stakeholders will make a call on the league once the Supreme Court verdict comes in. "As AIFF president, I assure you that the league will take place. But time is of the essence, there is international calendar, FIFA windows, home and away matches, so time is a factor," Chaubey told PTI at the sidelines of a press conference hosted by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA)."If the league doesn't take place, it is not only footballers but the people who are associated with football will be affected. It's thousands of people who will be affected. So, we will put our best effort to ensure that the league happens.""I am not saying it (ISL) will be delayed, we don't know when the decision is coming. And so as and when it comes, definitely the AIFF will take a call, sit with all the stakeholders and ensure that how smoothly these tournaments, including ISL, can be conducted."Appointment of India coachChaubey said that the executive committee meeting will happen soon and thereafter, the announcement of the head coach will be made. "I think 10 days from now, if all goes smoothly."We will hold executive committee meeting and thereafter the name of the head coach will be announced," Chaubey said. The AIFF announced on July 23 that Khalid Jamil, Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic were the candidates who were shortlisted for the role. - EndsMust Watch

Did AIFF really undermine its League Committee at the CAS? President Kalyan Chaubey clarifies

Two days after the I-League chairman, Lalnghinglova Hmar, alleged that the All India Football Federation (AIFF) had undermined its own League Committee at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the matter of Inter Kashi winning the I-League, the AIFF president has denied that it was the case. The matter in question was the registration of Kashi's player Mario Barco, who was initially de-registered and then brought in again mid-season. The move was approved by the League Committee — a body the AIFF had earlier termed 'responsible for holding and organising the Competition and dealing with and/or arriving at all decision-making processes and issues mentioned hereunder or otherwise so provided in these Regulations, unless otherwise expressly excluded.' However, the decision was invalidated by the Appeals Committee. ALSO READ | Indian football — AIFF expected to confirm men's team head coach on August 1 When the ruling was challenged at the CAS, instead of maintaining its pro-League Committee stance (mentioned above), the AIFF had no choice but to defend its own Appeals Committee, even if that meant taking a stand against the League Committee. '... the AIFF League Committee lacked the authority to render any final and binding clarification or opinion on the interpretation of Article 6.5.7 in response to the AIFF Competitions Department's query,' the AIFF said, in its submission to the CAS. 'As such, the League Committee Opinion was void ab 7 initio. The invalidity of the League Committee Opinion is not merely procedural but jurisdictional, and it therefore taints the entire process.' Hmar said the change in stance had left him 'confused and disappointed', in a letter written to the AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey on July 23. However, Chaubey clarified that the alteration had nothing to do with undermining the League Committee and that it was a consequence of the Federation's different legal stance at the two judicial bodies. Unlike at the Appeals Committee, the AIFF was obligated to defend its own judicial body at the CAS, which prompted the shift. 'After considering the submissions of all parties, including those made by the AIFF itself, the Appeals Committee issued its decision, which went against Inter Kashi, which was a respondent during these proceedings. Kashi subsequently challenged this ruling before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne,' Chaubey told Sportstar. 'In the proceedings before CAS, Inter Kashi was the Appellant, and the AIFF was named as a Respondent, as the decision under challenge was rendered by one of its judicial bodies, the Appeals Committee. Since the Appeals Committee had taken into account the AIFF's submissions while deciding the matter, the AIFF was accordingly required to defend that decision before CAS.' In the end, on July 18, the CAS set the Appeals Committee's decision aside, crowning Kashi the league champion.

Xavi Hernandez and Pep Guardiola's applications were not genuine: AIFF

NEW DELHI: A day after its top official claimed that World Cup-winning Spanish great Xavi Hernandez was among the applicants for India football coach's position, the All India Football Federation said that the e-mail received in his name was found to be "not genuine" and three others have been short-listed for the job. The AIFF did not reveal the names in the pruned list but it is widely believed that Khalid Jamil, currently the head coach of Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC, is the front-runner for the post left vacant by Spaniard Manolo Marquez. "The AIFF received an e-mail furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez. The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the e-mail applications were not genuine," AIFF stated in a media release. One of its officials, on conditions of anonymity, had stated on Friday that the application of Xavi could not be processed as the AIFF did not have resources to hire his services. The IM Vijayan-headed Technical Committee, it is learnt, has also kept Englishman Stephen Constantine, who has previously coached India, and Slovakia's Stefan Tarkovic in the short-list.

Did Xavi apply for India coach job? Indian football body makes bizarre statement

The Indian football fanbase went into a frenzy after reports emerged that legendary midfielder Xavi Hernandez had applied for the role of head coach of the Indian men's football team. But excitement quickly turned into skepticism, with many questioning the authenticity of the claims. Now, a new statement from India's football governing body has only added to the Saturday, July 26, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) released an official update stating that its Technical Committee had evaluated 170 applications for the top job, which were later narrowed down to 10 shortlisted candidates. As part of the selection criteria, the AIFF stated it was looking for someone with 'a deep understanding of the Asian and Indian football ecosystem.'advertisementAmong the 170 applications, one reportedly came in the name of Xavi Hernandez—a claim first reported earlier in the week and now seemingly confirmed in the AIFF's own statement. 'Additionally, the AIFF received an email furnishing the applications from Spanish coaches Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez,' the federation the next part of the statement left fans scratching their heads.'The authenticity of their applications could not be confirmed, and it has since emerged that the email applications were not genuine.'That clarification has done little to quell the speculation. Did Xavi actually apply? Was the email simply a prank or a misrepresentation? The answer remains unclear, and fans—already disillusioned by the current state of Indian football—are left with more questions than answers.A NEW FACE FOR INDIAN FOOTBALL? The timing of the drama is particularly unfortunate. Indian football currently finds itself in a precarious position—without a national team coach, with uncertainty hanging over the domestic league's future, and no clear path forward. The hope of a high-profile savior like Xavi or Pep Guardiola had, for a moment, stirred or not the legendary Spaniard truly had interest, the episode has highlighted just how desperate Indian football is for a fresh face and a new direction. And with time running out, both the AIFF and its fans know one thing for certain: Indian football needs a leader—now more than ever.- EndsMust Watch
