MACC opens investigation paper into Singaporean tycoon over Sabah mining scandal

KOTA BARU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has opened an investigation paper into a Singaporean tycoon believed to be linked to the Sabah mineral mining corruption scandal.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said he had instructed MACC Sabah to carry out a thorough investigation into the case.
"We opened the investigation paper yesterday involving the Singaporean businessman.
"I have directed MACC Sabah to conduct further investigations," he told a press conference after witnessing the handing over of duties between outgoing state MACC director Rosli Husain and newly appointed Azmin Yusuff, here today.
Azam said the case is expected to involve a large number of witnesses, including new individuals who have not been called in earlier cases.
Asked about the number of witnesses summoned in the cases involving Sabah assemblymen, Azam said: "There are too many witnesses.
"I can't recall all of them, especially as each investigation paper involves different witnesses.
"The latest case involving the Singaporean tycoon will require fresh witnesses, and I believe many will be called," he added.
To date, three individuals have been charged in connection with the scandal, two Sabah assemblymen and businessman Albert Tei.
Asked whether more individuals will be charged, Azam said that decision lies with the deputy public prosecutor.
"There are others still under investigation, but I cannot make any decisions regarding charges. That is up to the prosecution," he said.
It was reported yesterday that the MACC is investigating allegations that a Singaporean business tycoon may have acted as a financier in the scandal.
Sources said the investigation refers to an article that has gone viral on social media, alleging that the tycoon had channelled funds to several interested parties in the matter.
They said the MACC is currently examining information related to the claims and will call several witnesses soon to assist in the investigation.
So far, two Sabah assemblymen and a businessman have been charged with corruption linked to the issuance of mineral prospecting licences in the state. All have claimed trial.

Corrupt cops exist, we won't sweep it under the rug, Ayob vows

KUALA LUMPUR: The police will not cover up corruption within its ranks, says Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay. He said he did not deny corruption existed in the force, adding that many officers had been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the police's Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS). "We will act against anyone involved in corruption regardless of their rank or position," he said after the launch of a book titled "Antologi Puisi Makan Suap" at Wisma Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka last night. "From the top to the bottom, if you are corrupt, we will act against you. Corruption tarnishes the police's image." Ayob said most police officers carried out their duties with integrity, but there was a handful who were corrupt. He added that his record spoke for itself, having overseen the arrest of 24 police personnel during his time as Johor police chief, 14 of whom were sacked from the force. While serving as the Narcotic Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director, Ayob said action was also taken against a superintendent, a deputy superintendent, two assistant superintendents, and an inspector who were all dismissed from the force. "I will not compromise with corruption," he said, adding that if a corruption case were discovered, he would hand the case to the MACC before taking other measures, including opening investigation papers and taking disciplinary action. Earlier in his speech, Ayob said there were those who claimed it was hard to stamp out corruption in the force, though this would not stop him from trying. "The era of rhetoric has passed. The public is watching our every move, our lifestyles, what we own." At the event, Ayob received a "Tokoh Integriti PEMUISI Malaysia" award for his efforts to eradicate corruption in the police.

MACC: Army secrets were leaked

KUALA LUMPUR: The senior Armed Forces officers and journalists arrested by graft busters in the Klang Valley recently are believed to have leaked military operation details to smugglers. The leaked information is believed to have allowed illicit activities in southern Malaysian waters to proceed without interference from security and enforcement agencies. The five officers and two news portal journalists, themselves former military personnel, have now been remanded. Also remanded were a company manager, an administrative assistant from the Malaysian Medical Association and a foreign woman. All were aged between 30 and 55. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki (pic) said investigators have linked four companies to the smuggling of prohibited goods, including drugs, cigarettes and other contraband. 'The number of syndicates involved is still under investigation. We do not rule out the possibility of cross-border networks. 'Our probe is currently focused on suspects who are alleged to have received bribes from smugglers in exchange for military operational details along the nation's maritime borders,' he said yesterday. Azam said two premises belonging to one of the suspects were raided on Aug 14, with RM120,190 in cash found. 'The total cash seized so far stands at RM183,390. Fake firearms and drugs were also seized and handed over to the police for further investigation,' he added. Authorities have frozen bank accounts belonging to 12 people, as well as 24 accounts linked to a company, amounting to RM155,609.77. He said the MACC would also investigate an online media company following the arrest of two of its staff members. 'We have reason to believe the company is being used as a front to enable and facilitate money laundering activities,' he said. Meanwhile, Azam said the MACC has seized assets worth RM31.4bil from corruption-related activities over the past five years. It had also forfeited assets valued at nearly RM28bil during the period. The amount included the RM183mil of assets seized from smuggling syndicates under the recent Ops Metal. 'MACC seized luxury assets worth RM32mil from the residence of a 'Tan Sri', including 217 luxury watches and 27 designer handbags,' he said in a statement yesterday. Azam described the operations as evidence of the MACC's proactive approach in detecting, investigating and taking firm action against those involved in corruption and money laundering.
