The Dallas Mavericks have clinched a postseason berth

Luka Doncic had other ideas, as he dropped 45-points on his old team and led LA to a 112-97 victory. The Lakers secured a Playoff bid outright with the win, leaving Dallas to fight another day… or get help from elsewhere.

Generally, players and their fans would rather control their own destiny by securing their Playoff fate on their own terms. Sometimes you just have to take the gift in whatever form it comes. For better or worse, depending on your personal perspective, the Mavs will be no worse than the 10 Seed in the Western Conference, good enough for a shot to win two road games for the right to be called the 8 Seed and enter the Playoffs proper.
When all was said and done Wednesday night, the Mavs were surely happy to see they lost no ground to the 9 Seed Sacramento Kings, who dropped their game to the Denver Nuggets. Better still for their Playoff aspirations was the outcome of the Phoenix Suns matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Suns continued their free-fall, dropping an eight-straight game an eliminating their already-tenuous Playoff chances.
With their loss, the Mavs have guaranteed themselves a place in Postseason play. Dallas still has a chance to climb as high as the 9 Seed, but it will take some work with limited time. The Mavericks are a full game behind Sacramento, and the Kings hold the tie-breaker. If the Kings win one of their final two games, the Mavs will not be able to jump them. The only scenario where Dallas climbs is if they win their last two games in conjunction with the Kings losing their last two. This seems unlikely, but if this season has taught us anything, it is to expect the unexpected.

Mavs block New York Knicks from speaking with Jason Kidd, reports say

The New York Knicks asked the Dallas Mavericks for permission to interview head coach Jason Kidd, but the Mavericks shut that down, CBS Sports and The Associated Press report. The Knicks fired head coach Tom Thibodeau on June 3, despite reaching the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years. They reached the playoffs four times in Thibodeau's five seasons and had won at least 50 games in each of the final two. The Knicks were also denied permission to speak with coaches Ime Udoka of Houston and Chris Finch of Minnesota in a slow start to find Tom Thibodeau's replacement. All three coaches are under contract and their organizations declined to make them available for interviews with the Knicks, two people with knowledge of the details said Wednesday. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the interview process was to remain private. Knicks president Leon Rose interviewed Kidd and Udoka in 2020 before hiring Thibodeau. Both also played for the Knicks, with Kidd ending his Hall of Fame career on the team that reached the 2013 playoffs, which was the Knicks' last appearance before Thibodeau's arrival. Kidd has been the head coach of the Mavs since 2021 and led the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals. He has not publicly addressed the rumors. ___ AP Basketball Writer Tim Reynolds in Indianapolis contributed to this report.

Wings' move to downtown Dallas postponed at least a year by construction delays

DALLAS — The Dallas Wings' move to a renovated downtown arena has been postponed at least a year because of construction delays while a new practice facility is expected to be completed on time. Club CEO and managing partner Greg Bibb told The Dallas Morning News on Wednesday the Wings will play at least one more season at the University of Texas at Arlington, about 20 miles from downtown Dallas. The WNBA team has played in Arlington since moving from Tulsa, Oklahoma, for the 2016 season. The Dallas City Council gave final approval Wednesday to the $55 million practice facility set to be built a few miles west of downtown. Bibb said the Wings plan to use that facility while still playing home games in Arlington. The arena under renovation, which will be called the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas Memorial Arena, is the former home of the Dallas Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association. That franchise became the NBA's San Antonio Spurs in 1973. The city approved $7.7 million for renovations last year as part of a 15-year use agreement, which included a provision that the practice facility had to be completed by 2026. ___ AP WNBA:
