Balochistan train service suspended: IED explosion derails five Jaffar Express coaches
The IED blast took place on a train track near Quetta's Spezand Railway Station on Sunday morning, the railways said in a press release. It added that five coaches of the 39-Up Jaffar Express train, which runs from Quetta to Peshawar, had been derailed while all passengers remained safe.
'Railway and security teams are present at the scene, and rescue operations have begun,' the statement said.
It said the railway administration will bring passengers back to Quetta in light of the security situation, adding that train operations from Quetta will resume after authorities provide security clearance.
Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi condemned the attack. 'Terrorists' cowardly acts cannot weaken our resolve,' Abbasi said in a statement issued by railways.
Abbasi stated that the attack on Jaffar Express was a well-planned act and part of a foreign conspiracy. He emphasised that if authorities had prior intelligence about the attack, preventive measures would have been taken.
The Minister reiterated that Pakistan continues to face terrorism, and all global powers, including China, the US, and Pakistan, stand united against terrorism. He confirmed that all passengers have been rescued from the train, while efforts are underway to evacuate more.
While the cause of today's blast is yet to be officially confirmed, the attack has raised fresh concerns about the security of railway routes in Balochistan's remote and volatile regions.
Meanwhile, Railways Minister said that owing to poor security conditions train operation being suspended in Balochistan for some days.
Federal Minister Hanif Abbasi has stated that Peshawar to Quetta Jaffar Express service will remain suspended from August 10 to 13, while Peshawar bound Jaffar Express from Quetta to remain suspended from 11-14 August.
Meanwhile, Karachi to Quetta Bolan Mail's operation has been suspended from August 10 to 15, railway minister said. He said the train operation from Quetta will be resumed after issuance of the security clearance.

Railways set for major overhaul
Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi on Wednesday outlined a comprehensive roadmap to revamp Pakistan Railways, saying that transformational progress was already underway despite limited resources. Responding to legislators' queries during the National Assembly's question-hour session, he said that passenger amenities had been substantially upgraded at major stations, including Rawalpindi City, Cantt, Raiwind, Khanewal and Multan, now aligned with modern standards for cleanliness, restroom facilities and waiting areas. He added that a state-of-the-art upgraded station was set to be inaugurated in Karachi on September 10, modelled after recent upgrades in Lahore. Stations in Hyderabad, Sukkur and Faisalabad would follow suit on September 30, with the full transformation of all major stations targeted for completion by December 31, 2025, and all smaller stations by June 2026. "We are committed to offering international-standard services to every class of passenger – economy, business and VIP, and I guarantee the facilities will match those seen in developed countries," Abbasi stated. On freight services, the minister noted that despite a shortage of rolling stock and wagons, Pakistan Railways had managed to operate an efficient nationwide cargo network originating from Sindh, generating significant revenue in the past year. "Freight is the backbone of rail systems worldwide. We're now moving toward a turnaround in this segment as well," he affirmed. Abbasi further said that the Narowal section had resumed operations after a 12-year hiatus, and the Musa Pak Express had been revived from Multan. Collaborations with the governments of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan were underway to uplift and restore additional routes. "We're working on agreements with Sindh to restore discontinued routes, and discussions are ongoing with CM Sindh this month. Similar cooperation with Balochistan has enabled a 50km uplift from Sheikh Zaid to Kuchlak," he said. When he assumed office, Abbasi said, he had focused on three key service areas: punctuality, cleanliness, and food quality. He noted that the efforts had yielded measurable improvements, with punctuality now reaching 90 to 95 per cent on certain routes such as Lahore-Rawalpindi. Addressing a question on mass transit, the minister clarified that Pakistan Railways was not directly involved in projects like the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) or Lahore Metro, as such initiatives had fallen under provincial jurisdiction after the 18th Amendment. However, he added, the ministry was available to extend technical support when requested. In a landmark development, Abbasi highlighted progress on the transnational rail link from Kohat to Mazar-i-Sharif via Kharlachi. The project, part of the regional connectivity initiative envisioned during the PDM government, had seen diplomatic and technical advances, including a trilateral signing ceremony in Kabul with Afghan and Uzbek counterparts. "The 850-km link to Central Asia, with an existing 75-km track inside Uzbekistan, will be a game-changer. A feasibility study will be completed by December 31 this year," he announced. "We've already allocated $5 million, matched by Uzbekistan, while Afghanistan has assured full security for the route." Abbasi revealed that the Karachi-Rohri section (480 km) was nearing final agreement with a financial institution, while the Lahore-Rawalpindi segment — also part of ML-1 — had received a Rs250 billion allocation in Punjab's budget. "The groundwork for Karachi-Rohri and Lahore-Rawalpindi is expected to begin next year," he added, noting that negotiations for the remaining segments were ongoing with multiple stakeholders. He said that the most modern station in the 77-year history of Pakistan Railways would be inaugurated in Karachi on September 10.

LAHORE: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar said on Wednesday that Pakistan is making rapid progress and will achieve greater strength, prosperity and dignity in the international community. Under the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's leadership and guidance, his team is working diligently to advance quickly on economic, diplomatic and developmental fronts, Ishaq Dar said while talking to the media after inaugurating the 982nd Urs of Hazrat Ali Hajveri, known as Data Ganj Bakhsh. He added that Pakistan's focus must remain on effectively managing its affairs and journey of moving forward. He added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is fully focused on economic development. Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan and Provincial Minister Bilal Yasin were also present on the occasion. Dar maintained that, by the grace of Allah Almighty, the journey of progress will continue until the country emerges as a strong fortress of Islam on the world map. He stated that development is a long process but stressed that Pakistan's progress has already begun. He expressed gratitude to Allah Almighty for bestowing honour upon Pakistan and guiding it toward economic stability and diplomatic success. Regarding counter-terrorism, he revealed that on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted an extensive dialogue with a high-level US delegation comprising two dozen officials from both countries. He said Islamabad had been providing Washington with irrefutable evidence for the last year that the Majeed Brigade is part of the BLA and was involved in the Jaffar Express attack. New Pak-US front against terror trains sights on BLA, TTP
Listen to article Pakistan and the United States on Tuesday pledged to deepen counterterrorism cooperation, with a renewed focus on tackling outlawed terrorist groups, including the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), the Islamic State (ISIS)-Khorasan and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). But what was significant in the joint statement issued after the latest round of counterterrorism dialogue held in Islamabad was that it was for the first time the US agreed to work together with Pakistan to tackle groups such as the outlawed BLA. The two countries regularly hold counterterrorism dialogue but never before the joint statement made mention of terrorist groups such as the BLA. The latest move highlights the growing security and counterterrorism cooperation between the two countries. It came a day after the US State Department formally designated BLA and its suicide squad, Majeed Brigade, as Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO). The development is seen as a major diplomatic victory for Pakistan at a time when India is openly supporting terrorist groups, including BLA to create instability in Balochistan. The State Department said on Monday it has also added the Majeed Brigade as an alias to BLA's existing Specially-Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) listing, first imposed in 2019. The latest designation will take effect upon publication in the Federal Register. 'Today's action demonstrates the Trump Administration's commitment to countering terrorism,' the State Department said, adding that such designations 'play a critical role' in restricting support and resources for terrorist activity. The BLA was blacklisted in 2019 following a string of deadly attacks in Pakistan. Since then, the group has continued to target civilians and security forces, often using the Majeed Brigade to carry out high-profile suicide missions. In 2024, the BLA claimed responsibility for suicide attacks near Karachi airport and the Gwadar Port Authority Complex. This year, it claimed the hijacking of the Jaffar Express, which killed 31 people, including security personnel, and saw over 300 passengers held hostage. The other highlight of the joint statement issued on Tuesday was that the US, contrary to the Indian allegations, lauded Pakistan's continued successes to contain terrorist entities that posed a threat to the peace and security of the region and the world. This, according to observers, clearly indicated that the US was not ready to buy the Indian narrative that Pakistan was behind the April 22 Pahalgam attack. The joint statement said that Pakistan and the US reaffirmed their shared commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. According to the joint statement, the dialogue was co-chaired by Special Secretary for the United Nations, Nabeel Munir and US Department of State Acting Coordinator for Counterterrorism Gregory D LoGerfo. 'Both delegations underscored the critical importance of developing effective approaches to terrorist threats, including those posed by Balochistan Liberation Army, ISIS-Khorasan, and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan,' the statement read. The United States applauded Pakistan's continued successes to contain terrorist entities that pose a threat to the peace and security of the region and the world. Furthermore, the United States expressed condolences for the loss of civilians and members of law-enforcement agencies in terrorist incidents in Pakistan, including the barbaric Jaffar Express terrorist attack and the bombing of a school bus in Khuzdar. Both delegations emphasised the importance of building stronger institutional frameworks and developing capabilities to respond to security challenges and to counter the use of emerging technologies for terrorist purposes. Both sides reaffirmed their intention to work closely in multilateral fora, including the United Nations, to promote effective and enduring approaches to counterterrorism. Reaffirming the long-standing partnership between Pakistan and the United States, both sides emphasised that sustained and structured engagement remains vital to countering terrorism and promoting peace and stability. Pakistan and the US counterterrorism saw a renewed push since President Donald Trump took office for his second term. Since then the relationship has been on the upward trajectory with frequent high-level exchanges and visits. This year, Pakistan, acting on the US intelligence, arrested and extradited one of the masterminds of August 2021 Kabul Airport attack. That assistance led President Trump to publicly praise Pakistan in his maiden address to the US Congress.
