‘After AUS, Shubman Gill made batting changes': IND coach spills details, says ‘Rishabh Pant makes…'

Hindustan Times3 hours ago

Shubman Gill justified the BCCI's decision to appoint him as the new red-ball captain, smacking a dominant ton in the ongoing India vs England first Test match in Leeds. Gill slammed 147 runs off 227 balls, at an average of 64.76. Meanwhile, his knock also consisted of 19 fours and a maximum. It wasn't just Gill who got a ton, as vice-captain Rishabh Pant (134) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) also bagged centuries, taking India to 471. Speaking after Day 2, India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak analysed Gill's batting and pointed out that the GT star has implemented changes. Gill fell victim to criticism during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where India were defeated. He only got 93 runs at an average of 18.60 in five innings. Meanwhile in the ongoing series, he crossed that in the first innings of the first Test itself.
Kotak revealed, 'After Australia (tour) he has thought (about) certain things which he implemented. Because after (the) Australia (tour) and England series (followed by) Champions Trophy and then we had IPL, I wouldn't say that I had a lot of time to do things (with Gill). But obviously, he worked on certain things and as soon as I saw him in the nets, I did speak to him that 'you made certain changes' and he said yes. A lot of credit to him for analysing what he needs to do and I think he did it really well.'
Kotak was also impressed with Pant's entertaining action-packed display, and also accepted that he didn't have anything to do with the performance.
'Rishabh Pant is someone who makes his own plans. He decides (the way) and (then) he bats. This innings was a little different than you would see him normally but honestly that is all his plans. The way he wanted to approach it and when he wanted to attack, he did (and just) because he plays aggressive (cricket) does not mean he cannot play defensive,' he said.
But India also have plenty to improve on, when it comes to their middle order and tailenders. The visitors lost their last seven wickets for only 41 runs.
Addressing the issue, he said, 'It was a bit of a collapse, I would say, because batsmen were also there. From 430 for three to 471 all out, batsmen also got out in it, isn't it? So, it wasn't only the last five; it was a bit of a collapse. We were expecting better than that, but it can happen.'
In response to India's first innings total, England got to 209/3 at Stumps on Day 2. Jasprit Bumrah struck thrice, getting openers Zak Crawley (4), Ben Duckett (62) and Joe Root (28). But Duckett's contribution proved to be key for the hosts and Ollie Pope remained unbeaten after getting his ton. He slammed 100* off 131 balls and will resume batting with Harry Brook (0*).

IND vs ENG: ‘Same impact as Sir Richard Hadlee'- Sanjay Manjrekar lauds Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah (Photo by) Jasprit Bumrah emerged as India's standout performer on Day 2 of the Leeds Test, claiming all three England wickets while his teammates struggled. As England reached 209/3 at stumps, Bumrah's figures of 3/48 highlighted his effectiveness on a day when the rest of India's bowling attack appeared ineffective at Headingley. Bumrah's victims included Zak Crawley, who fell early for 4 runs, followed by Ben Duckett for 62 and Joe Root for 28. The dismissal of Root proved particularly crucial in the context of the game. Former India cricketer and JioHotstar expert Sanjay Manjrekar praised Bumrah's performance, drawing parallels with New Zealand legend Sir Richard Hadlee. "We've seen four hundreds in the match so far -- three from India and one from England -- but which bowler has been truly special? For me, it's just Bumrah," Manjrekar said on 'Match Centre Live' after Day 2's play. 04:54 India lose momentum on Day 2 | England Fight Back at Headingley "Just the ability to manufacture a wicket every time he came into the attack is what stands out. The one bowler that comes to mind, someone with that kind of impact single-handedly, is Sir Richard Hadlee. He played for a New Zealand team with a relatively weaker attack, but every time he came on, you felt a wicket was around the corner," Manjrekar observed. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? Earlier in the match, England won the toss and chose to bowl first. India's innings was highlighted by three centurions - Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 101 off 159 balls with 16 fours, captain Shubman Gill made 147 from 227 balls including 19 fours and a six, and Rishabh Pant contributed 134 from 178 balls with 12 fours and six sixes. India's total reached 471, though they had been well-positioned at 430/4 before a collapse triggered by Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue , who took four wickets each. Good news for Preity Zinta PBKS as star player who couldn't score even one run in IPL 2025, now smashed 156 runs of just ...., his name is....

23-year-old opener Mitchell Owen has put in a tremendous performance in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) in the US. In the match against Mumbai Indians New York, he played an explosive innings of 60 off just 26 balls, including five fours and five sixes. He has 156 runs off his bat in MLC 2025 so far, with a total of 12 sixes. The Washington Freedom have won three of the four matches they have played so far in MLC 2025. They registered a thrilling 2-wicket win against Mumbai Indians New York, giving them their third consecutive victory in the tournament and completing a hat-trick of victories. Mumbai Indians New York, batting first, had scored 188 runs for 4 in 20 overs. In response, the team of Washington Freedom achieved the target for 8 wickets with 4 balls remaining. Opener Mitchell Owen's brisk innings proved decisive in the victory. As brilliant as Mitchell Owen's performance in the MLC has been, his career in the IPL has been equally disappointing. Making his debut for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, Mitchell Owen could not even open the account and returned to the pavilion without scoring a run. It turned out to be his only IPL innings. He got the chance to play for Punjab Kings which is owned by Preity Zinta. Mitchell Owen was signed by Punjab Kings for Rs 3 crore as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell in IPL 2025. However, he could not capitalize on this opportunity and proved to be a flop in the very first innings. He did not get a chance to play further due to his poor performance. Mitchell Owen has showcased his talent in MLC 2025 after failing in IPL. He played a key role in Washington Freedom's third victory and was named Player of the Match for his spectacular innings.

Rishabh Pant in Test cricket is an experience. Savour it.

There is something about watching Rishabh Pant, especially in Test cricket. He provides viewers moments that no other batter can. There are batters who are more elegant, or more powerful, or with equally quick scoring rates. But none of them are Rishabh Pant. None of them can give you that simultaneous feeling of thrill, awe and dread that Pant does, when he gets to his century by charging down the track and hitting a six. And does it on Day 2 of a Test series in England. In Test cricket, a Rishabh Pant innings is the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. You can either know what he's going to score off the next ball – or what shot he's going to play. But you can't know both. Not until the event is past. Pant's seventh Test century broke several landmarks. It also meant India got to 471 in their first innings. One way of looking at it is, this is the lowest total for any team with three century-makers. The other way is, if it wasn't for Pant's 134, India's total would have been much lower and they would have been in some trouble. A third way of looking at it is with just wonder, because Pant did supremely Pant things during his stay. Falling over paddle sweep against fast bowlers? Check. Nonchalantly audacious shots that don't come off, but still end up in no-man's land? Check. Nonchalantly audacious shots that do come off, and leave everyone's jaws on the floor? Check. Get to his fifty and century with shots that no one else would? Also check. Nothing Pant does is ordinary, which is why you can't tear your eyes away when he's batting. He's so unconventional, you half expect him to come out to bat in beach shirt, bermudas, massive shades and a boombox. And yet, since his debut, India hasn't had a better batter than him in the games he's played. It feels unseemly to measure Pant by numbers, but they do tell some compelling tales. India's first Test against England is Pant's 44th game. No Indian batter with at least 1000 runs averages more than Pant in the games he's featured in. No one has hit more centuries than the 7 he has. Lower the cut-off to 500 runs and Jaiswal's 43.55 is marginally ahead of Pant's 43.40 average - but Pant has almost four times the runs Jaiswal has. Pant has 3082 runs in 44 Tests since his debut in 2018. Despite his missing more than a year of all cricket due to his horrific accident, the only Indian with more runs in this period is Virat Kohli, and he played in 55 Tests for his 3436 runs, and averaged 38.6, significantly lower than Pant. With 7 centuries, Pant is already India's most prolific wicketkeeper-batter. His idol, MS Dhoni had only six Test hundreds, and he played in more than double the matches Pant has. Pant has hit 79 sixes in Test cricket, going one past Dhoni there too. Only Virender Sehwag (90) and Rohit Sharma (88) have hit more in Test cricket for India. Who wants to bet that he won't be top of the list by the time this five-Test series is done? That is the genius of Pant. He has churned out runs with consistency, while batting with almost carefree abandon. It needed Sachin Tendulkar to tell us that even when Pant is being unconventional, he's actually batting to a plan. It should have been evident to anyone who saw Pant's scores. But sometimes the evident can be blurred in a whir of falling paddle sweeps. Tendulkar wrote on social media, that 'Rishabh's falling paddle sweep is not accidental. It is intentional and extremely clever. Going down with the shot allows him to get under the ball and scoop it over leg slip with control.' So while Pant might appear to be making merry on the ground, there is actually a proper method to all the madness. He is India's vice-captain, and suddenly finds himself as one of the seniors in a team in transition. Before the Headingley Test, he joked that he was 'finally' a senior and that 'it felt good!'. But when he spoke seriously, he indicated that he wouldn't deviate from who he had been. 'See, it's an extra added responsibility, but at the same time, when you are in the middle of the ground, you're not thinking, 'Oh I'm the vice-captain. I'm the senior player. You're just a batsman, you're going to do your best and the game will take care of itself.' Pant's best is rather special. And it's come off more often than you'd think. Savour it while it's there, because there isn't another like him.
