Bradford Soapbox race to show off new city centre

Yahoo14-03-2025

A go-karting race showing off Bradford's new £43m pedestrianised city centre is set to attract some 20,000 tourists to the city over the bank holiday weekend.
Jonny Noble, chief executive of Bradford Business Improvement District (BID), hopes the Super Soapbox Challenge event on Sunday 4 May will bring record crowds to Bradford this spring.
"With the new pedestrianised areas and the new layout of the city centre, we feel it's an ideal opportunity for people to have a fantastic day - but also have a wander round," said Mr Noble, who represents 400 firms in the city.
More than 25 local businesses entered last year's race, with an estimated 15,000 spectators over the course of the day.
"Usually we get about 15,000 people on average; the biggest year so far was 17,000," said Mr Noble.
"Weather allowing, we're expecting - with Bradford being the UK City of Culture and the feel-good factor - to get towards the 20,000 mark this year. "
Mr Noble said the event played an important role in supporting city centre businesses, with spectators spending in shops, cafés and restaurants.
He said: "The event's held on a Sunday purposefully to drive that much-needed footfall.
He conceded "the Transforming Cities work going on last year... was quite disruptive", but suggested the newly pedestrianised city centre could make this year's event more popular than ever before .
He said the starting point for the race track would remain at the top of Kirkgate, continuing on to Bank Street. But instead of turning back along Tyrrel Street, this year it will run towards Market Street - one of the key pedestrianised thoroughfares - towards a new finishing line.
There will also be a slalom section, he added, urging any last-minute participants to sign up to the race.
"We are still welcoming karts. We've still got a few places left. Go on to the BID website and have a look on the events page," he said.
The first Soapbox Challenge was held in Bradford in 2022.
"It's great news we'll be returning to Bradford for a fourth year," said Andrew Pearson, marketing director for the event for which Yorkshire Air Ambulance is a charity partner.
"It's all about team spirit, raising money for great causes, and enjoying the excitement of the race."

RD1 Spirits' Latest Whiskey Expression Unites Sister Cities' Cultures in Limited Release

A Celebration of Craft and Culture: Award-Winning Straight Kentucky Whiskey Honors Lexington's Sister Cities Through Japanese Mizunara and French Oak Wood Finishing LEXINGTON, Ky., June 4, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- RD1 Spirits, the Kentucky bourbon brand known for pushing the boundaries of wood finishing, has introduced a limited release, Kentucky Straight Whiskey Finished with Japanese Mizunara and French Oak, that invites whiskey fans into a global conversation. The 2025 "Sister Cities" expression—a blend of 5- and 7-year-old bourbon with 8-year-old rye—is finished with Japanese Mizunara and French Oak, bringing together the American spirit of Kentucky whiskey with the wood character imparted from two different countries. With a mash bill that starts in classic Kentucky tradition and finishes with an international perspective, this new release speaks to RD1's experimental ethos—and to its hometown roots. Lexington, Kentucky shares "Sister Cities" relationships with Shinhidaka, Japan and Deauville, France. The award-winning bourbon brand created a unique opportunity to honor these connections through innovation and wood finishing from both countries. "We saw this as more than a whiskey experiment," said Jarrad Gollihue, PhD, R&D Master Distiller for RD1 Spirits. "It's a cultural expression. Japanese Mizunara and French Oak each bring their own subtle but complex influence and beautifully showcase the bold foundation of the Kentucky bourbon and rye." In this Limited Release, Gollihue began with a 5-year-old bourbon (70% corn, 21% rye, 9% malted barley), matured in new, charred, American White Oak barrels. French Oak "necklaces" were added to the casks, extending maturation for a total finish time twice that of RD1's existing portfolio French Oak release. This finished expression was then blended with a 7-year-old bourbon (75% corn, 13% rye, 12% malted barley) and an 8-year-old rye (51% rye, 37% corn, 12% malted barley)— both well-aged, grain-forward spirits that added depth and contrast. The final step introduced lightly toasted Japanese Mizunara staves, which added delicate nuances of the wood's iconic character of sandalwood and incense. RD1's latest Limited Release earned a gold medal and 95 points at the 2025 New York International Spirits Competition. "For those of us who work to foster international connection, seeing a local distillery embrace our Sister Cities with such care and creativity is incredibly rewarding," said Kay Sargent, executive director of the Lexington Sister Cities Commission. "This new release speaks to the power of cultural appreciation, and how those values can be shared through something as iconic as Kentucky bourbon." RD1 Limited Release Kentucky Straight Whiskey Finished with Japanese Mizunara and French OakAged with 5- and 7-year Bourbon and 8- year Rye (51% ABV / 102 Proof) - $69.99 MSRP Aroma: Incense, citrus blossom, subtle florals Palate: A dynamic journey of sandalwood, rye spice, baking spice, dark chocolate, sweet oak, and red fruit Finish: Medium to long, with a soft heat and a lingering note of Maraschino cherry The 2025 Limited Release "Sister Cities" is now available at the new RD1 Distillery at The Commons in Lexington on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®, and sold through select retailers across the country. The whiskey will be available for online purchase at later this month. RD1 produced 1500 cases (6-pack, 750 ML) of its Sister Cities expression. Event will promote military skills to employers

An event demonstrating the value of military skills in the workplace is to be held as part of Armed Forces Week. Mission Business will offer presentations and talks to companies and organisations from across Lincolnshire, encouraging them to hire veterans. The event will be held at the Officer's Mess at the Prince William of Gloucester Barracks in Grantham on 25 June. Bridget Ley, South Kesteven District Council's armed forces champion, said it would be a "golden opportunity" to combine support for businesses and ex-military personnel across the county. The event is being run by the district council, the Ministry of Defence and the Business Unfinished consultancy. The council, which holds a gold award under the MoD's defence employer recognition scheme, employs former military personnel as bin collectors and in grounds maintenance. At the event, veterans who run their own businesses will be sharing their journeys from deployment to employment. Serving members of the military will be at the event, giving talks about how their skills can benefit organisations when they end their service. Those attending will hear how hiring military reservists can unlock training benefits worth up to £10,000 for employers. The Greater Lincolnshire Defence and Security Cluster (GLRDSC) will explain how businesses can access defence budgets so they can secure defence contracts. Julian Free served in the Army for 30 years before joining the University of Lincoln, where he is now deputy vice chancellor (regional engagement) and chair of the GLRDSC. Mr Free, who finished his service at the rank of major general, described members of the forces as "technical, skilled people" with a "good work ethic". He added that they were "quite a rich source of well-qualified people to take into businesses".
