Qatar municipality progressing well towards zero-waste target
The Ministry of Municipality has reaffirmed its pioneering commitment to attain sustainability through various tangible initiatives towards the creation of a clean and more sustainable environment and green future.
On the occasion of the International Zero Waste Day, the ministry stressed the need for collaborating efforts of people and the related entities to attain the objective in Qatar and reviewed its various efforts and achievements in this regard.
The ministry has a comprehensive legal system to maintain public health, environment cleanness and achieve sustainable development. These include the ministerial decision no 143 for 2022 on the regulations of using plastic bags, besides the launch of the comprehensive national programme for sorting waste at the source, and the ministerial decision no 170 of 2021 regarding sorting of solid waste.
The Integrated National Solid Waste Management Programme launched in 2022 targets an integrated development of all facilities and systems for collecting, transporting and managing solid waste in the country until 2030 following the principles of circular economy, and Qatar National Vision 2030.
The ministry has always adopted an active awareness approach to promote the ideas and practices of sustainability across the society such as constant inspection campaigns to monitor the implementation of the decision to limit the use of single-use plastic bags, a number of conferences and events held throughout the year to promote recycling and sustainability, various activities and events held at the shopping malls to raise public awareness on related issues, and maintaining active partnership with the private sector, factories and companies in this regard.
Accordingly, the ministry has made several key success in waste recycling that include effectively disposing of the country's stock of damaged tyres, the production of more than 277 megawatt/hour of clean energy using recycled materials, and the production of more than 40,000 tonnes of fertilisers from recycled waste.
The Ministry has allocated 51 land plots for establishing recycling plants at Al Afja Area in Mesaieed. The first guidebook for waste management and recycling was also launched, while awareness efforts are ongoing to attain the zero-waste target.

Ministry of Economy, Dubai Police partner to strengthen cooperation
The Ministry of Economy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dubai Police General Command to strengthen cooperation and coordination in developing compliance mechanisms for anti-money laundering (AML) and combatting the financing of terrorism (CFT) requirements. The agreement facilitates the exchange and integration of information between the two entities, thus enhancing supervisory roles within the national legislative framework. The MoU was signed on the sidelines of the fourth edition of the World Police Summit, held at the Dubai World Trade Centre under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The agreement was signed by Safia Hashim Al Safi, Assistant Undersecretary for Commercial Control and Governance at the Ministry of Economy, and Major General Expert Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansoori, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs at Dubai Police. Safia Al Safi emphasised that the UAE has made significant strides in developing advanced strategies, policies, and legislation to combat money laundering and terrorism financing in line with the highest international standards. This has further reinforced the national economy's position as a competitive trade and business hub committed to the highest standards of integrity and transparency. He noted that the partnership with Dubai Police aligns with the Ministry's vision to enhance collaboration with federal and local entities, thereby strengthening the national framework and developing mechanisms to combat financial crimes and enhance regulatory infrastructure in accordance with relevant international standards. Safia Al Safi explained that the MoU establishes a sustainable institutional framework between the Ministry and Dubai Police to collaborate on various AML/CFT procedures within the country, including control, inspection, and monitoring of illicit activities. This partnership aims to elevate the efficiency of control and follow-up systems and serves shared objectives in combating financial crimes within the country. We aim to leverage Dubai Police's research, investigation, and financial analysis ecosystems to develop effective, proactive mechanisms for detecting suspicious activities and enhancing rapid responses to associated risks, in line with global best practices. This plays a role in reinforcing the UAE's position as a secure and transparent global economic hub.' He further emphasised that the collaboration marks a significant step forward in integrating national efforts and unifying resources and expertise to develop more precise and effective regulatory tools, while continuing to invest in national talent and smart technologies to build a safer and more stable environment. Counselor Salem Al Tunaiji, Director of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Department at the Ministry of Economy, explained that the MoU provides advanced mechanisms for technical and security coordination between the Ministry and Dubai Police. This includes the exchange of data related to money laundering and terrorism financing crimes, aligning with the Ministry's role in supervising Designated Non-Financial Businesses and Professions (DNFBPs) and identifying the real beneficial owners of legal entities. Under the scope of the MoU, both parties will collaborate on developing integrated mechanisms and programs to elevate risk response efficiency related to suspicious financial activities within the DNFBP sector, which include real estate agents and brokers, traders of precious metals and stones, auditors, and company service providers. This will be realised through the exchange of data on suspicious transactions and activities and the activation of secure and effective institutional communication channels to ensure the swift exchange of confidential data in line with the approved legal and regulatory frameworks. These efforts support their awareness endeavours to prevent and deter violators, in line with the applicable legislations and regulations in the UAE. The MoU also outlines the implementation of joint training programs and specialised workshops aimed at enhancing the professional competencies of both parties' staff and the development of periodic analytical reports to support decision-making, ensuring the comprehensive application of administrative and regulatory procedures. Additionally, the MoU includes provisions to support awareness and media campaigns related to institutional compliance and financial crime prevention, as well as collaboration in developing relevant policies and legislation and reviewing regulatory frameworks to ensure their alignment with international requirements. Meanwhile, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) organised the 'Eid Joy' initiative, which brought together well-behaved inmates of correctional and rehabilitation centres with their families in a festive atmosphere on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha.

UAE to implement Midday Break for 21st consecutive year from June 15 to Sept.15, 2025
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced the implementation of the Midday Break, prohibiting work under direct sunlight and in open-air spaces between 12:30 pm and 3:00 pm, from 15 June to 15 September 2025. Now in its 21st consecutive year, the Midday Break is rooted in a sustainability-centred approach that the UAE implements in line with its commitment to providing a safe working environment as per international best practices and occupational health and safety standards, protecting workers from injuries and illnesses caused by working in high temperatures during the summer months. Under the terms of the Midday Break, companies are required to provide necessary supplies and arrangements, including shaded areas to protect workers from the sun during the break or while performing permitted tasks. They must also ensure appropriate cooling equipment is available, such as fans, adequate quantities of drinking water, and hydration supplements like electrolytes as approved for use by local authorities, along with other amenities and first-aid supplies at the Midday Break regulations take into account the need for continuity in certain types of work that serve public interests. Exemptions apply to tasks that must continue uninterrupted for technical reasons, such as laying asphalt or pouring concrete when it is unfeasible to complete these activities after the exclusions include work required to address hazards or repair issues that impact the community, such as disruptions to water or electricity supply, traffic congestion, and malfunctions in basic services. The exemption also covers activities that require a permit from a competent government authority due to their impact on public life and Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation works to assess the level of compliance with the Midday Break requirements among companies, using its monitoring system throughout the duration of the initiative. Moreover, the Ministry welcomes reports of harmful practices or violations flagged by members of the community through its call centre at 600590000, website, or smart companies will be fined Dhs5,000 for every worker per breach, up to a maximum of Dhs50,000 if several workers were found to be in violation. The Ministry will also escalate its awareness campaigns and field visits, in coordination with its public and private sector partners, to educate workers and employers about the provisions of the Midday Break and the necessity to comply with regulations in that regard. Mohsin Ali Al Nassi, Assistant Undersecretary for Inspection & Compliance at MoHRE said, "The Midday Break has achieved a record compliance rate of more than 99% for several years in a row, in a clear indication of the firmly entrenched social and humanitarian values among the business community and private sector companies in the UAE. This also highlights the high level of awareness regarding the need to protect human capital, the most valuable resource in any company, reflecting the commendable and people-centred nature of labour regulations and practices embraced in the UAE, especially with regards to occupational health and safety.' Al Nassi highlighted the Ministry's commitment to raise awareness among establishments and their workers about the importance of adhering to the provisions of the Midday Break through field visits by inspectors to workplaces and labour accommodations. This contributes to enhancing awareness of occupational health and safety requirements and protecting workers from heat-related illnesses. For her part, Dalal Alshehhi, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Protection at MoHRE, said, "The Midday Break has become a prime example of constructive partnerships between the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, the private sector, and the wider community, with many partners developing their own initiatives to support workers while the Midday Break is in effect,' Alshehhi added. "This reinforces the principle of social responsibility and ensures the success of our awareness strategies, further embedding humanitarian values in the UAE's work environment, which welcomes more than 200 nationalities to live, work, and invest, in line with the objectives of the 'We the UAE 2031' vision.' Alshehhi commended private sector establishments that have taken the initiative over recent years to provide fully equipped rest areas designed to ensure workers' utmost comfort during the daily Midday Break, demonstrating these establishments' strong commitment to ensuring workers' well-being before they resume their daily duties after the break. She urged all private sector establishments to adopt similar initiatives, which have a positive impact on workers' health and contribute to enhanced productivity. WAM
