Brian Campbell wins second title of year in John Deere playoff

RTÉ News07-07-2025
Brian Campbell's par on the first playoff hole gave him his second career victory on the PGA Tour, winning the John Deere Classic, while the wheels fell off Seamus Power's challenge.
Argentina's Emiliano Grillo scrambled on the extra hole, the 18th at TPC Deere Run, and Campbell's steady approach was enough.
Campbell, who also won the Mexico Open at Vidanta World in a February playoff, and Grillo, bidding for his third PGA Tour triumph, both posted 4-under-par 67s to finish regulation at 18-under 266. Campbell is the sixth multiple winner on the tour this year.
Campbell's double-bogey on the 15th nearly cost him, but he rolled in a birdie two holes later.
David Lipsky, who was in the final pairing, hit his tee shot into the rough on the 18th and missed a par-saving putt from 15 feet away, dropping out of a would-be spot in the playoff with his 68. He tied for third place with Kevin Roy (65).
Lipsky's bogey on the 15th put his title chances in jeopardy, but an eagle 3 on the 17th - coming on a putt of less than 8 feet - pushed him into a share for the lead.
Ireland's Power had started the day well in contention, just three shots off the lead as the final round started. However, a round of 75 which featured three bogeys and two double bogeys was enough to see him drop down the leaderboard and finish 10 shots off the pace.
Carson Young (64), Lucas Glover (64), Jacob Bridgeman (64), Matt Kuchar (66), Kurt Kitayama (67) and Max Homa (69) all ended at 16 under in a tie for fifth place.
Again, the leaderboard was full of contenders. Seventeen golfers, including amateur Jackson Koivun, ended up within three shots of the lead. Koivun (67), a 20-year-old, was among seven golfers at 15 under.
Homa was 3 under for the day through four holes and held the lead at 16 under before an uneven finish.
Beau Hossler and Michael Thorbjornsen set the early pace with torrid 63s fort he day's best rounds.
Third-round leader Davis Thompson shot 72 and tied for 18th place at 14 under. His fourth bogey of the day came on the final hole.
First-round and 36-hole leader Doug Ghim dropped to a tie for 31st place at 11under after his Sunday score of 69.
South Africa's Aldrich Potgieter, who won the Rocket Mortgage Classic in a playoff a week earlier for his first tour victory, withdrew prior to the final round.

Sky Sports presenter left with 'PTSD' after 'awful' on-air blunder with golfer

Sky Sports pundit Iona Stephen wished the earth would open up and swallow her whole after bungling Dustin Johnson's name during a live television interview. The 41 year old golfer, who was poised to capture the world No. 1 ranking in the Official World Golf Rankings at that moment, had just secured victory at the debut Saudi International tournament held at Al Murooj Golf Course. The event marked the European Tour's first foray into Saudi Arabia, as well as being among the inaugural tournaments to receive dual sanctioning from both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. Stephen felt the weight of expectation to mention the tournament's proper title during her chat with Johnson, who had emerged triumphant with an impressive 19-under-par total across the weekend. However, the stress of making sure she called it the 'Saudi International' rather than the 'Saudi Invitational,' which she had in her head, led to her fumbling Johnson's name instead. Recalling the incident during a chat with Peter Finch on his Rough Cut Golf Podcast, Stephen said: "I called the world No. 1 Dustin Johnson, Justin Dohnson, live in a winner's interview." When Finch teased if it was a big event, Stephen added: "It was a huge event, yeah. At the time it was one of the first co-sanctioned events in the world. It was when the DP World Tour first co-sanctioned with the PGA Tour, and it was called the Saudi International. "And I had been told I needed to say the name of the tournament, the Saudi International, in the winner's interview; like, 'Congratulations, you've won the Saudi International...' But all I kept wanting to call it was the Saudi Invitational, and I couldn't get this out my head. "So I was going, 'Saudi Invitational, Saudi Invitational, Saudi International, Saudi International, Saudi International...' Then they went, 'Cue Iona live,' and I went, 'Justin Dohnson, congratulations!' "And he looked at me, I looked at him. I wanted the ground to eat me up, it was awful, the whole thing. PTSD from that for many years." Stephen has been a popular member of the Sky Sports Golf team since 2020, having previously played the game to a professional standard. Most recently she was on hand at Royal Portrush for The Open Championship, which was won by none other than Scottie Scheffler. Johnson also featured in the event, finishing T23 on six under-par. He has won 24 events in total with the PGA Tour and another nine on the European Tour before he joined the controversial LIV Golf breakaway league in 2022. As captain of the 4Aces team, Johnson plays alongside team-mates Thomas Pieters, Harold Varner III and Patrick Reed. He has enjoyed plenty of success since making the move across to LIV, winning one event each year. He is also the second-highest earner on the roster at present, with £44,417,051 to his name in winnings, including a £13million payday for being crowned 2022's Individual Champion. The only man to have earned more than Johnson with LIV is Talor Gooch, who has racked up a staggering £49m. However, Johnson isn't the only big name in the golfing world who jumped ship from the PGA Tour to play under the LIV banner after the league's inception of 2021. The likes of Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson all remain part of LIV, competing week in, week out for incredible individual and team cash prizes. Just three events remain on the circuit this season, with LIV Golf Chicago landing at Bolingbrook Golf Club, LIV Golf Indianapolis at Chatham Hills and the LIV Golf Team Championship in Michigan all taking place in August.

Seamus Power's FedEx Cup play-off push derailed by back-nine woes at Wyndham Championship

Waterford's Seamus Power shot an opening round of one-under-par at the Wyndham Championship, the final regular season event on the PGA Tour, as Joel Dahmen tied the lowest round of his career with a nine-under-par 61 to set the early pace. Two-time tour winner Power was left feeling the cost of a sloppy back nine where he made bogeys on 10, 11 and 14; halting his small playoff chances in quick time. The 38-year-old needs a win to make the last 70 and the opening event of the post season, the FedEx St Jude Championship, but now finds himself eight shots back of the lead after day one. FULL LEADERBOARD Power got himself off to a fast start at Sedgefield Country Club, rolling in short birdie putts on the second and fifth holes. This was followed with back-to-back birdies on eight and nine, as he posted an impressive four-under-par front nine, but he was unable to keep that pace up. Dahmen too needs a strong showing at the regular-season finale, A win would vault him from No. 101 in the standings all the way to 48th. Dahmen holds just a one-stroke advantage over Sweden's Alex Noren, who turned in an eight-under 62 at Sedgefield Country Club. Four players were tied for third at 63: American pair Cameron Young, Mark Hubbard, Colombia's Nico Echavarria and defending champion Aaron Rai of England.
