The heartbreaking story behind the manager who downed Arsenal: PSG boss Luis Enrique still says he's 'very lucky' after nine-year-old daughter's death left him and his wife devastated
Luis Enrique is set to manage in his second Champions League final later this month after guiding PSG past Arsenal in their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night.
A decade on from winning the competition with Barcelona, Enrique will be back on the touchline for the biggest game in club football, and there are few that would begrudge him the honour after he suffered a family tragedy six years ago.
Back in 2019, Enrique stepped away from coaching the Spanish national team to spend more time with his daughter, Xana, after she was diagnosed with bone cancer.
Xana sadly passed away aged just nine on August 29, 2019, leaving Enrique and his wife, Elena Cullell, devastated.
Losing a child is every parent's worst nightmare, but Enrique spoke movingly last year about why he still considered himself to have been 'very lucky' in life.
Reflecting on Xana's heartbreaking death, Enrique explained: 'Can I consider myself lucky or unfortunate? I consider myself lucky, very lucky.
'"But your daughter died at nine years old". Well, my daughter came to live with us for nine wonderful years. We have thousands of memories from her, videos, incredible things.'
The clip of Enrique's tribute to his daughter proceeded to show Xana doing a gymnastics routine in the garden as her family filmed and watched on proudly.
Enrique then continued: 'My mother couldn't keep photos of Xana until I arrived home and asked her "why aren't there any photos of Xana, mum?"
"I can't, I can't". "Mum, you have to put (photos of Xana) up". Xana is alive. She isn't in the physical plane, but she is in the spiritual plane. Because every day we talk about her, we laugh and remember.
'Because I think that Xana still sees us. What do I want Xana to think about how we lived this?'
The video concluded with Xana enjoying activities such as playing the piano with a beaming smile on her face.
Enrique's touching words highlighted how he still feels Xana is with him every day, and he is determined to make her proud of him.
Enrique returned to take charge of Spain just three months after Xana's passing and led them into the 2022 World Cup.
He was relieved of his duties after the tournament following Spain's penalty shootout defeat by Morocco in the round of 16.
But he was not away from the dugout for long as he was appointed PSG manager in July 2023.
He had to cope without Lionel Messi and Neymar after they both left PSG to move to Inter Miami and Al-Hilal, respectively, that summer.
Yet he still won Ligue 1 and the French Cup in his first season at the club.
Kylian Mbappe joined Real Madrid last summer, leaving Enrique to adapt without another star player.
The 55-year-old manager has done exactly that, with PSG strolling to another league title, while they have also reached the finals of the French Cup and Champions League.
PSG are just two games away from a historic Treble, and have already knocked Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal out of Europe this season.
Only Inter Milan stand in the way of the French giants winning the Champions League for the first time in their history, on what promises to be an emotional night for Enrique as he looks to continue to make Xana proud.

Simpson survives two knockdowns to stop Zucco
Super-middleweight Callum Simpson picked himself up off the canvas twice before securing a stunning stoppage victory over Ivan Zucco in his home town of 28, made history as he maintained his unbeaten record (18-0) to become the town's first European champion when he stopped Italy's Zucco in the 10th round at Barnsley FC's Oakwell Stadium. The Englishman dedicated the win to his sister, Lily-Rae Simpson, who died aged 19 in a car accident in Greece last year."Not once did I give up, in those last few rounds I'll be honest I started thinking about my little sister Lily," Simpson said."I'll be honest, I just thought I had to push for her and for everybody. This time last year, Lily was sat up here cheering me on and she was there with me tonight when it got tough, when it got hard."From round eight, I thought, 'I've got to dig deep, I've got to keep pushing, I've got to do it for her'. BREAKING NEWS Mauricio Pochettino shuts down 'unrealistic' Tottenham links and claims he is 'so happy' with USA one year out from the World Cup
United States men's national team coach and former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino threw water on rumors that he could return to north London. On Friday, the Europa League champions announced they had sacked manager Ange Postecoglu, who broke a 17-year title drought for the club. Answering a question asked by Daily Mail after a 2-1 loss to Turkey, Pochettino indicated that the rumors were not realistic and that his name was one of many linked with the job. 'I think, since I left in 2019, my name has always been on the list [of rumors],' Pochettino said in the press conference. 'I've seen the rumors, we are 100 coaches on the list. Don't be worried about that. If something happens, we'll see, but we cannot talk about this type of thing. 'Today it's not realistic, look where I am, look where we are. The answer is so clear.'

Coco Gauff hits back at Aryna Sabalenka's sour claim that Iga Swiatek would have beaten her in the French Open final
Coco Gauff has hit back at Aryna Sabalenka 's contention that Iga Swiatek would have beaten her in the French Open final. The 21-year-old American sensation conquered Roland-Garros for the very first time after coming from behind to defeat the top-ranked Sabalenka 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. This marked the second Grand Slam of Gauff's career, having also claimed the 2023 US Open title. The world No 2 became the first American to win the French Open since Serena Williams in 2015. To tee up Saturday's showdown, Gauff beat Lois Boisson in the semi-final, while Sabalenka edged past world No 5 Swiatek. And in an ungracious press-conference after the final, Sabalenka argued that Swiatek would have beaten Gauff had she progressed past the semi-final. Sabalenka said: 'That hurts. Especially when I've been playing really great tennis during the whole week. A lot of tough opponents, Iga. 'I think if Iga would have beaten me, she would go out today and she would get the win.' Gauff parried the distasteful claim away and cited her victory in straight sets against Swiatek at the Madrid Open earlier this year, which was also on clay. Gauff rebutted: 'I mean, I don't agree with that. I'm here sitting here (with the trophy). Last time I played - no shade to Iga or anything, but I played her and I won in straight sets (in Madrid). 'I don't think that's a fair thing to say, because anything can happen. The way Aryna was playing the last few weeks, she was the favourite to win the title. If you asked me, honestly, who I wanted to play, it was Iga just because I felt Aryna was playing so good, and she was. 'But regardless of who I played, I think I had a good shot to win. I definitely had that belief.' Sabalenka made 70 unforced errors in blustery conditions, and said: 'It felt like a joke. Like somebody from above was laughing: let's see if you can handle this 'After two weeks of incredible tennis, in the final in terrible conditions to play such terrible tennis really hurts. 'It felt like she (Gauff) was hitting the ball off the frame and somehow magically it lands in the court. I don't think she won the match because she played incredible, just because I made all those mistakes.' The world No 1 went on to blame the conditions, namely the wind, and admitted her emotions got the better of her. 'They were terrible. The wind was terrible. Coco simply handled it better,' Sabalenka added. 'Also, I was overemotional. I think I didn't have a good mental grip on myself today. That was basically it,' said the world number 1. In detail: 'Whenever she hit the ball, the wind would eventually make it fly like crazy, and I was always too late. It just felt like a joke, like someone from above was just laughing and saying, 'Let's see if you can do this.' And today I couldn't.'
