
The fatal failure of SA's political opposition
While the creation of our first national coalition government was supposed to be a major change in government, it has also led to major changes in the opposition benches. Despite the fact that the coalition has failed to improve the lives of most South Africans, parties that oppose it have failed to make much headway.
South Africa's 2024 elections led to the biggest changes in the opposition benches.
The Democratic Alliance (DA), which had become very effective in opposition, was suddenly in government (and taking many of its oppositional habits into the Union Buildings).

A party (MK) which had never been represented in Parliament before was suddenly the Official Opposition. And was led by someone who himself had never been an MP.
The previous time John Hlophe had been mentioned in the National Assembly was the day he became the first judge to be impeached in the democratic era.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), used to being able to make noise as the third-biggest party, found itself in a reduced role, even though its greater parliamentary experience has made it more effective than the uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party.
And there are several smaller parties who have both tried to be oppositional to the coalition, and flirted with joining it.
It is perhaps the greatest indictment of our opposition parties that despite the fact the coalition has delivered GDP growth of just 0.1%, they cannot craft an effective message.
A major part of this has been the divided nature of the MK party.
Considering President Jacob Zuma's history of a lust for personal power and for wrecking institutions, this was always going to be the case.
The revolving door of people in the position of secretary-general has surely created massive instability.
It was also entirely predictable that the trio of Zuma, Hlophe and Floyd Shivambu was going to be about as stable as the Trump-Musk relationship.

Zuma also had very few people to choose from.
The fact he had to appoint someone like Mzwanele Manyi to the position of Chief Whip and then demote him is proof of that.
Probably only one other individual has said more and contributed less to our politics than he.
Meanwhile, Hlophe has appeared to battle with the transition from being a judge, where your instructions are simply obeyed, to leading a parliamentary caucus, where people must be persuaded.
He has also not been able to deliver a single speech in Parliament that has captured the public imagination.
For the Leader of the Opposition, a constitutionally mandated position, this is a massive failure. Parliamentary speeches are a massive platform for the opposition and the leader of that party should be able to use it effectively.
However, as has been said many times, MK's real problem is that there is no internal democracy and thus no durable legitimate structures.
It is unlikely that this will change and thus unlikely that it will become a more effective opposition.
The EFF has shown itself to be more effective than MK, partly because its members have more parliamentary experience and partly because its leader, Julius Malema, is prepared to be in Parliament and thus use its platform (unlike Zuma).

That said, it still appears as if the EFF has not yet got over the shock of being relegated to the position of fourth-largest political party.
Certainly, Malema appears to be unable to grab the political agenda in a way he did, say, five years ago.

Even though videos featuring him were shown during President Cyril Ramaphosa's Oval Office meeting with President Donald Trump, he was unable to really insert himself into that story.
It may be that Malema's previous focus, on attacking first Zuma and then Ramaphosa so personally, has turned into a strategic weakness.
Ramaphosa is not as powerful as he was and, while he may symbolise the coalition government, Malema has been unable to turn him into a hate figure.
Crucially, Malema announced at the start of this Parliament that he would no longer disrupt proceedings as he had in the past.
So far, he has not been able to come up with a new tactic, or a new line of attack that has really given him traction.
One of the more intriguing dynamics of this period has been the role of some of the smaller parties that are not formally in the government coalition.
ActionSA has found itself in a position where it can at times support the coalition or the ANC, and then oppose it.
In the hours after ActionSA took the decision to vote with the ANC to support the fiscal framework of Budget 2.0, the party's Athol Trollip was incredibly honest when asked if ActionSA would now join the coalition.

He summed up the situation for the party when he said: 'If the DA leaves the GNU [Government of National Unity], whether they get kicked out or they decide to leave, the opposition space is going to get crowded and we will have to take a strategic decision. Will we still make an impact in opposition, or must we look at perhaps going into government? But that depends on the GNU, whether they want us there or not. We will wait and see, but we will make a strategic decision where we can make the greatest impact.'

This revealed the options the party was dealing with in essence.
But it also meant that when the ANC and the DA found each for Budget 3.0, ActionSA had to be content in the opposition benches, despite the fact voters would have known it considered joining the ANC.
Build One South Africa, meanwhile, has appeared to struggle to gain traction with a consistent message. Its leader, Mmusi Maimane, has made regular media appearances and often provided principled opposition to government proposals. But it is hard to know if they have been able to really change government policy or win more votes.
So far, it seems the coalition government has completely failed to make a difference to the lives of most people.
Parties in opposition have failed too; they have not yet provided a credible alternative for voters. DM

BEE is bringing South Africa's economy to its knees – new report A report released on June 12 by the Solidarity Research Institute (SRI) and the Free Market Foundation (FMF) has sent shockwaves through South Africa's political and economic landscape. The report delivers a scathing critique of the country's Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policy, asserting that it is causing substantial damage to the South African economy while enriching only a small, politically connected elite. BEE was initially introduced as a transformative policy aimed at redressing the economic imbalances of apartheid by promoting greater inclusion of black South Africans in the economy. However, the latest findings paint a different picture, highlighting a policy that is now burdening economic growth, exacerbating inequality, and stalling job creation. According to the report, the annual compliance costs for BEE range from R145-billion to R290-billion, which represents between 2% and 4% of South Africa's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This enormous economic burden has resulted in an annual reduction of GDP growth by between 1.5% and 3%, with a concomitant loss of between 96 000 and 192 000 jobs each year. Over the years, this has accumulated to about 3.8 million lost job opportunities for South Africans. 'This huge economic cost is not simply the result of negligence or the mere poor implementation of a plan. It is a deliberate government policy that causes it,' said Theuns du Buisson, economic researcher at the SRI and co-author of the report. 'It is irrelevant when someone then says the policy was introduced with good intentions. Today it serves as a mechanism to enrich the elite at the expense of our country's economy and especially at the expense of its poorest citizens.' The report further outlines that while there has been some progress in terms of black ownership and skills development, these gains are heavily overshadowed by the adverse effects of BEE. Among these are increased inequality, elite capture of policy benefits, and widespread economic stagnation. 'The policy places a particularly heavy burden on critical sectors such as mining and finance,' the report reads, 'and it deters foreign investment, encourages capital flight, and stifles technological progress.' South Africa's economic position on the global stage has deteriorated markedly, falling behind other middle-income countries with which it was once comparable. The report critiques the lack of focus and effectiveness in the implementation of BEE policies, which contrasts with more successful affirmative action or empowerment programmes abroad. Du Buisson pointed to countries such as Brazil and the United States, which have begun to phase out similar race-based economic policies. 'Moreover, in other countries, affirmative action policies are precisely there to prevent discrimination, while in South Africa, they in fact make discrimination compulsory,' he noted. 'South Africa must now follow the path of other countries and get rid of it. BEE has become an instrument that benefits a small, politically connected elite and has long ago stopped being a policy that could empower a disadvantaged society.' Connie Mulder, head of the SRI, emphasised the urgency of the situation: 'South Africa cannot afford to continue down this path. The data is clear. BEE, in its current form, is damaging the economy and hurting those it was meant to help. We need policies that promote real economic participation and growth without racial quotas that cripple progress.' The call to action from the writers of the report is for policymakers to immediately abolish the current BEE framework and replace it with a policy that fosters inclusive growth without impeding the economy. Minister: Crime stats prove SA's plan is working despite criticism
The South African government is determined to deal with crime despite media reports to the contrary. This is the word from Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni who briefed the media in Cape Town today. 'Cabinet has noted the continuous debate about crime in South Africa and allegations that there is a lack of a concrete government plan to deal with crime in South Africa. This is despite that on the May 23, the minister of police released the 2024/25 fourth quarter [statistics]. During this crime statistics release, the minister of police outlined the seventh administration's policing priorities,' she said. Those priorities are: Reducing the murder rate; Reducing illegal firearms and tightening controls over legal firearms; Fighting gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF); and Dismantling organised crime, including drug trafficking syndicates, cash-in-transit heists, extortion and kidnappings, tackling gang violence, and combating corruption both within the SAPS and across the country. 'The… statistics showed progress of a general decline compared to the same period in the previous financial year. For example, of the 30 high-crime police stations in terms of reporting, 13 have recorded lower counts [of crime reporting] and two recorded no change. 'On farm murders… whereas in principle, government does not categorise South Africans in terms of race, in light of recent misinformation, the following are the statistics: Of the farm owners killed – both… were African. Of the farm workers killed, both… of them were Africans and of the five farm managers killed, one was African [thereby] dismantling the misinformation that there is a targeted attack on white commercial farmers or white farmers in general,' she explained. Furthermore, Operation Shanela continues to score gains against illegal firearms, with 128 of those seized recently. 'The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations is also continuing its work, which resulted in 656 suspects appearing in court, including 364 linked to serious organised crimes, 220 from serious commercial crimes, and 72 from serious corruption. 'On GBVF, a roundtable led by [the] Inter-Ministerial Committee on GBVF will be held… tomorrow at the Atteridgeville Community Hall in Pretoria, and this will focus on the National Strategic Plan implementation and progress thereof. It will also evaluate and reinforce the effectiveness and efficiencies of services provided to GBVF victims,' she said. Political killings Cabinet also welcomed the guilty plea entered into by Sibusiso Ngcengwa in the murder of former ANC Youth League Secretary General and municipal councillor Sindiso Magaqa. Magaqa was killed in 2017 in an apparent hit in KZN. 'Cabinet takes political killings seriously, more so because the victims of those are people who are committed to the fight against corruption in municipalities or in government. One year on, SA's GNU marked by dysfunction and missed opportunities
A year into South Africa's Government of National Unity, political compromise remains elusive, raising concerns about gridlock, infrastructure decay, and coalition fragility amid hopes for economic reform and unity. As South Africa marks the one-year anniversary of its Government of National Unity (GNU), the country stands at a crossroads—again. The 2024 general election failed to produce an outright majority, ushering in a coalition arrangement intended to provide political stability and economic direction. But has it worked? That was the central question of a webinar hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) on Thursday, chaired by Professor Purshottama Reddy, a governance expert. The panel featured UKZN political science lecturer Zakhele Ndlovu, Merchant Africa director Advocate Lavan Gopaul, KwaZulu-Natal Finance MEC Francois Rodgers, and Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Narend Singh. Ndlovu noted that despite the hope surrounding the GNU's formation, the country remains mired in indecision and dysfunction. 'Eight months ago, I said we were at a crossroads. Guess what? We still are,' he said. He cited legislative stalemates over key bills - the BELA, NHI and Expropriation Bills - as well as a deadlock on the national budget, as evidence of systemic gridlock. 'All these bills passed without DA support, yet the DA remains in the GNU. Some call it capitulation. I disagree,' said Ndlovu, arguing instead that the DA's legal challenge over the budget reflects profound unease. Still, there have been flashes of unity. Ndlovu referenced a recent White House delegation led by President Cyril Ramaphosa: 'Seeing GNU partners speak with one voice gives us hope.' Ndlovu narrowed his economic critique to two flashpoints: collapsing infrastructure and dysfunctional state-owned enterprises (SOEs). 'Electricity and water outages caused by poor maintenance are hurting business. Rail systems, especially those serving working-class routes like Stanger-Durban, have all but collapsed,' he said. He called the cabinet's portfolio allocations 'misaligned,' pointing to Defence Minister Angie Motshekga's lack of military experience.
