Dundee's Premier Sports Cup hopes dashed by Alloa

STV News5 days ago
Steven Pressley suffered a second defeat as Dundee manager as Alloa left their visitors' hopes of Premier Sports Cup progression in ruins.
Dundee were on the end of another 1-0 defeat at the Indodrill Stadium after losing their opening game against Airdrie.
The decisive moment came midway through the second half when Luke Graham could only turn Steven Buchanan's shot into his own net as he tried to clear in the goalmouth.
The result moved Alloa on to nine points at the top of Group C, three ahead of Airdrie with a game more played. SNS Group
Mikael Mandron hit a hat-trick as St Mirren started and finished strongly in an 8-2 home win over Annan.
Mandron put Saints three up inside nine minutes following Killian Phillips' double but trialist Myles Gaffney pulled two goals back for the visitors before Richard King converted a penalty on the hour mark.
Stephen Robinson's side went goal crazy in the final ten minutes with Mandron completing his treble and Jayden Richardson and Roland Idowu also on target. SNS Group
Ayr are a point behind Saints with a game in hand in Group D after Curtis Main hit a double in a 4-0 home win over Arbroath.
Falkirk could not follow up their seven-goal thrashing of Brechin as they were held to a goalless draw by Cove in another trip to the North East. The Bairns gained a penalty shoot-out bonus point but Spartans moved top of Group A with a 2-0 win at Glebe Park.
Stephen O'Donnell hit the only goal as Motherwell moved top of Group G with victory over Stenhousemuir at Ochilview.
O'Donnell had earlier had a goal disallowed and Callum Slattery hit the bar from a free-kick before the defender converted from a back-post corner four minutes before the break.
Livingston bounced back from defeat by Kilmarnock with a 2-0 home win over Brora Rangers. Danny Wilson opened the scoring with an overhead kick just after the half-hour mark and Zak Rudden headed the second with six minutes left. SNS Group
Ross County cut the gap on Group B leaders Partick Thistle to two points after Jay Henderson's second-half winner in a 1-0 victory over Queen of the South at Palmerston.
East Kilbride moved top of Group F as they followed up their shock triumph over Raith Rovers with a 4-1 win at Elgin with the help of Jack Leitch's first-half double.
St Johnstone joined the SPFL newcomers on six points after Uche Ikpeazu's 90th-minute goal – his first for the club – earned a 1-0 win at Inverness.
Josh Cooper hit a double as Dunfermline got off the mark with a 4-0 win at Dumbarton.

Airdrie win sets up Premier Sports Cup showdown cracker

The Diamonds beat Montrose 2-1 against Montrose at Arbroath's Gayfield last night Goals from Euan Henderson and Lewis McGrattan handed Airdrie a 2-1 Premier Sports Cup win over Montrose last night, that sets up a C 'winner takes it all' showdown at home to Alloa Athletic at New Broomfield on Saturday. ‌ A late rally from Montrose wasn't enough to stop the Diamonds from going top of the group on goal difference, with both themselves and Alloa on maximum nine points from their three games so far. ‌ Two goals in six second-half minutes sent Airdrie through. ‌ Henderson opened the scoring in 56 minutes, when he darted down the left flank and tried to pick out Chris Mochrie. Though the Diamonds No.7 didn't get a touch on the ball, he did enough to put off the Montrose defence and the cross squeezed in at the far post. McGrattan netted the second in 62 and Henderson was again the architect, driving in from the left and forcing a save from Campbell Millar, and while Henderson was tripped by a defender, McGrattan steered the ball in. Ewan Loudon beat Cade Melrose with a powerful effort from just inside the box, as the Diamonds conceded for the first time in the group stages, but it wasn't enough to prevent Airdrie from going through. Airdrie had other chances to score, and in 10 minutes Jamie Barjonas sent Henderson through on Aaron Clark, who did well to block with his foot. Loudon had a chance to net the rebound from a Melrose save, but Sean McGinty bravely blocked to keep the score at 0-0. ‌ Alex King and Liam McStravick had efforts blocked, before Dylan MacDonald's cross was headed wide by McStravick. McStravick sent an effort curling past the top corner as the half remained goal-less. Airdrie took the lead, and Mochrie sent an effort whistling past a post moments later. Henderson curled an effort over in 71 minutes, following good play by Mochrie. Montrose pulled a goal back and a flurry of free kicks around the Airdrie box made for a nervy end to the match, but the closest the hosts came was when sub Matheus Machado sent an effort narrowly over.

Who was 'the surprise package' in Hearts' win against Dumbarton?

We asked for your views following Hearts' fourth win in the Premier Sports Cup as they secured progression to the second what some of you said: GB: Why didn't we get Derek McInnes years ago? Sixteen goals already, what a start to a Next game against Sunderland will tell us much more than all these one-sided contests. I think we've got an age-old problem continuing at Hearts where we seem to prioritise quantity over quality. I don't think we have enough of the latter and Hearts fans are kidding themselves if they think Best display yet in a game where we showed intensity throughout. Not the finished group yet but definite signs that the basis of a coherent successful group is coming together. Another plus is four competitive games now in the players which should help when the league matches start with Aberdeen on 4 Another good performance without really getting into top gear to round off a successful group Braga and Alexandros Kyziridis look like exciting signings. Stuart Findlay has looked solid while Cammy Devlin and James Wilson have both done well. Looking forward to the start of the league New signings look great but we haven't faced a team yet that will put us under pressure. We won't really know how good this squad is until we play league games. The style of play that McInnes has introduced is more direct and more exciting to So many options in the final third and we await more! If you want a game for Hearts you will have to be on it. So much better than previous Lawrence Shankland offers more playing as a number nine up front. Last season he was played deeper but back up front he's back to his Huge spells of dominance throughout the game and performed well across all four matches as expected, it's good to build towards the league Another third-gear win for Hearts. The new signings are technically strong players and their direct play is easy on the eye. But the surprise package was Cammy Devlin, who's controlled performance and measured passing was in total contrast to his Tasmanian devil-type ankle-biting displays of previous seasons. Picking a first choice team from this squad will be no easy task for McInnes.
