Ian Machado Garry reacts to short-notice Carlos Prates headliner with excitement
Ian Machado Garry relishes the opportunity to save UFC on ESPN 66.
After the original headliner between Jamahal Hill and Khalil Rountree was scrapped due to a Hill injury, the UFC needed a big fight to fill the spot. The promotion ended up with an exciting welterweight matchup between Machado Garry (15-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) and Carlos Prates (21-6 MMA, 4-0 UFC), which takes place April 26 at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Despite not having a fight booked, Machado Garry said he had no hesitation to accept the UFC's call. Meanwhile, Prates was already in camp to fight Geoff Neal at UFC 314 on April 12 before Neal was forced out.
'Right, it's official. You've got a new main event,' Garry said on his Instagram. 'Kansas City, Missouri, me vs. Carlos Prates, April 26, I'm excited. Why? The UFC go, 'Ah, we need someone. Who do we need? Who do we call?' You call me. Why? Because I'm a real fighter who wants to fight the best in the world.
'I'm going to show everybody how good I am. Carlos Prates is awesome, but this is my world. I love to fight. There's nothing more I love in this world than fighting. Kansas City, Missouri, let's go. Ireland, get your tickets, get your flights. Brazil, get your tickets, get your flights.'
Machado Garry will look to rebound from his first-career loss, a unanimous decision to Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 this past December. Surging contender Prates has torn through his competition in the UFC so far, scoring four knockouts and four Performance of the Night bonuses – most recently over Neil Magny in the UFC Fight Night 247 main event in November.

2025 PFL World Tournament 5 video: Magomed Umalatov faceplants Anthony Ivy
Magomed Umalatov reminded everyone why he's considered by many to be one of PFL's pound-for-pound best. Although 2024 was a disappointing campaign for Umalatov (18-5), who was knocked out by Smail Musaev in the tournament final, 2025 is off to a hot start. Thursday at 2025 PFL World Tournament 5 in Nashville, Tenn., Umalatov flattened former UFC fighter Anthony Ivy (15-8) at 2:28 of Round 1. Advertisement The finishing sequence began when Ivy hopped toward Umalatov, who clipped him with a counter left. Somewhat stunned and out of position, Ivy faceplanted when a second Umalatov left hand cracked him. Umalatov is not in the 2025 welterweight tournament. However, the promotion could always insert him as an alternate replacement should they need him. Ivy, who had compiled seven straight wins in an improbable career turnaround, loses for the first time since August 2022. Up-to-the-minute 2025 PFL 5 results include: Magomed Umalatov def. Anthony Ivy via knockout (punches) – Round 1, 2:28 Sarek Shields def. Joseph Luciano via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) Kendly St. Louis def. Vancouver's Loopy Godinez to face former UFC champion Jessica Andrade in Chicago
Canadian strawweight Loopy Godinez will face former champion Jessica (Bate Estaca) Andrade at UFC 319 in Chicago on Aug. 16. Godinez (13-5-0) is ranked 11th among strawweight (115-pound) contenders while Andrade is ranked fifth among strawweights and ninth among flyweights (125 pounds). Godinez, 31, ended a two-fight losing skid with a win over Brazil's Julia (Psycho) Polastri in March. The Mexican-born, Vancouver-based fighter is 8-5-0 in the UFC. Andrade (26-14-0) won the strawweight title at UFC 237 in May 2019 when she knocked out American Rose (Thug) Namajunas. But she lost to China's Zhang Weili in her first title defence. The Brazilian was stopped by flyweight champion Valentina (Bullet) Shevchenko at UFC 261 in April 2021. Andrade has lost her last two outings and five of her last seven. She was submitted by Canadian Jasmine Jasudavicius last time out, at UFC 315 in May in Montreal. Andrade is 17-12-0 in the UFC. The main event at Chicago's United Centre sees South African Dricus du Plessis defend his middleweight title against No. 3 Khamzat Chimaev of the United Arab Emirates. Dana White Confirms Jon Jones 'Agreed to Fight' Tom Aspinall, But What Happened Next?
Dana White Confirms Jon Jones 'Agreed to Fight' Tom Aspinall, But What Happened Next? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The UFC heavyweight division's long-standing limbo took a dramatic turn last week as Dana White finally broke his silence on the Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall saga. At the UFC 316 post-fight press conference, White insisted Jon Jones agreed to fight Aspinall and accepted a deal. Advertisement The declaration seemed to promise a resolution to a saga of petty social media spats, retirement threats, and fan petitions demanding Jones be stripped of his title. Yet, as Ariel Helwani pointed out on Uncrowned, White's statement omitted a critical twist. Dana WhitePhoto by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC In a rant he posted on YouTube, Helwani dissected White's carefully curated narrative, highlighting the gap between the UFC CEO's optimism and the reality of Jones' commitment. Watch the full rant here: 'Confirmation: Jon Jones was offered the deal and accepted the deal. Rewind: Jon Jones was offered the deal, I said it, he finally accepted,' Helwani noted. 'Now, that's the most significant thing that Dana White has said regarding this in a very long time.' Advertisement However, he then revealed that Jones's acceptance of a fight deal was not solid, saying, 'The problem is he didn't tell you the whole story. He didn't tell you about the 'and then he went back on his word' part. He didn't tell you about that part. Eventually, that part will come out, but he didn't tell you about that part right then and there. But there it is.' Helwani speculates that White's press conference remarks were a last-ditch effort to pressure Jones into signing. This claim would be nothing more than speculation if it weren't for Jon Jones's recent social media antics, including his willingness to accept a fight with Francis Ngannou. In that same press conference Helwani alludes to, White also declared he has no power over Jones's career decisions, saying, 'Listen, if the guy wants to retire and doesn't want to fight, [there's] nothing you can do.' Advertisement Interim champion Tom Aspinall, meanwhile, has grown increasingly vocal, declaring himself the undisputed heavyweight king, wishing for the UFC heavyweight division to move on from this saga and dismiss Jones's legacy. The UFC has been facing a pivotal choice for months to either force the heavyweight champion's hand or risk the division's credibility. White's insistence that the fight between Jones and Aspinall rings hollow without contracts. As Helwani warned, 'the whole story' will remain untold.
