The Brief
The Sanctuary at Solid Rock got a call a few weeks ago about a major rescue from an undisclosed location in Central Florida.
The sanctuary provides medical care and rehabilitation to the rescue animals. It also serves to educate the students and train them in different professions working with animals.
This recent rescue has cost around $150,000, including costs for transport, housing and medical care.
TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. - An unusual rescue call landed almost two dozen exotic animals at a sanctuary outside Tampa.
The backstory
The Sanctuary at Solid Rock got a call a few weeks ago about a major rescue from an undisclosed location in Central Florida. The sanctuary operates in conjunction with the Solid Rock Community School, a K-12 school in Tarpon Springs.

"All of our animals here, 100% are rescues," said Michele Fasnacht, the founder and director of the Solid Rock Community School. "And so, we do not breed here."
Fasnacht said they only had a few days to prepare for this recent rescue.
"We're licensed for certain animals," Fasnacht said. "So, there's only certain animals that we can take, but that doesn't mean that we can take any animal and every animal because, obviously, we only have so much size and so much space."

She said this was the biggest rescue call they've ever received.
"We had several different types of tamarins, several different types of lemurs, so those are all primates," Fasnacht said. "We had monk jack deer, which come from Asia. Wallabies, which are smaller versions of kangaroos. Marmosets."
Dig deeper
Fasnacht said breeding of certain exotic animals can be done legally with proper permitting, but she said sometimes, it's done illegally.
"These are not animals that should be living in captivity," she said. "They're not animals that should be living in people's homes."

The students at the K-12 school help out at the sanctuary.
"We take care of the animals, and we clean their cages, we feed them, and then we do enrichment with them," Yvonne Cohen, a student at the school, said.
The sanctuary provides medical care and rehabilitation to the rescue animals. It also serves to educate the students and train them in different professions working with animals.
"This is where our high schoolers come who are interested in careers with animals," Fasnacht said. "And so, that might be students who are interested in being veterinarians, vet techs, vet assistants, wildlife rehabbers, animal attorneys."
Some of the animals roam freely throughout the property, while others stay in their designated enclosures. They all live alongside each other in the sanctuary though. The exotic animals now join some traditional rescue animals like chickens, roosters, pigs and turkeys.

"We're building enclosures inside and outside, building new habitats," Fasnacht said. "We have to change everything on the property around."
She said this rescue about doubled their capacity at the sanctuary.
"Once they come to us, they stay with us forever," she said. "So, this is their forever home."
What you can do
She said this recent rescue has cost around $150,000, including costs for transport, housing and medical care. The sanctuary said other organizations also assisted in this rescue.
Fasnacht said they're working to raise money right now to expand the sanctuary and help care for the growing number of rescue animals. You can find more information about The Sanctuary at Solid Rock and Solid Rock Community School here.

Hay bales on Bradenton Beach safeguard sea turtles

The Brief The 2024 hurricane season washed away sand dunes, sea oats and other vegetation which helped protect nesting sea turtles. Hay bales are now used to help block light and keep turtles on the right track. A female loggerhead sea turtle was recently rescued from inside a swimming pool after bypassing two fences. BRADENTON BEACH, Fla. - Bradenton Beach saw extreme damage from hurricanes Helene and Milton. Not only were homes and businesses destroyed, but were the beach dunes and all the vegetation that helps protect the coastline and the animals that visit the beach, including sea turtles. Right now, as Florida enters peak nesting season, Manatee County came up with a unique idea to protect nesting. OTHER NEWS: Turtle nests delay temporary fix to Manasota Key Road Hurricane Helene's storm surge washed away dunes, sea oats and local vegetation. All played a role in protecting sea turtles and their hatchlings from light that can disorient or confuse them. What they're saying "We were all trying to find out about what we could do to help the turtles so we could keep them from getting into the road. We wanted to be proactive, we wanted to be preventative and make sure the turtles were safe," said Kristen Mazzarella, the Executive Director of the Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird monitoring. The backstory Manatee County Natural Resources came up with the idea. Crews went to work and staked organic, seed-free hay as barriers for the turtles. Seed-free hay ensures nothing will take root on Bradenton Beach that doesn't belong there and helps keep the beach as natural as possible. The Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch was pleased with the idea. "The hay bales are here blocking the rock revetments, so the hatchlings can make their way into the rock revetments. Also, it's blocking the adult turtles from getting into the road. There's a lot of areas they'd have direct access into the road, and it's turning them to a different direction," said Mazzarella. With the hay bales now in place, Manatee County and the Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch are asking visitors to keep their hands off and let the hay do its job. In keeping the turtles safe through another nesting season with a few new challenges. What's next As of June 5, 2024, the Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch documented 149 turtle nests along the beaches of Anna Maria Island. If you find a sea turtle in distress (adult or hatchling), call AMITW at 941-301-8434 or FWC at 888-404-3922. The Source Information was gathered by FOX 13's Kimberly Kuizon. Bloody Handprints, 3 Slain Sisters: What We Know About Missing Dad Accused of Killing Them

Travis Decker is wanted after being accused of murdering his three young daughters The sisters - Paityn Decker, 9, Evelyn Decker, 8, and Olivia Decker, 5 - were found dead on Monday Decker remains at large as local authorities continue to search for him in WashingtonTravis Decker remains at large as police in Wenatchee, Wash., and the surrounding area continue their multi-day manhunt for the missing father suspected of killing his three young girls over the weekend. Paityn Decker, 9, Evelyn Decker, 8, and Olivia Decker, 5, were found dead on Monday, June 2 near the Rock Island Campground in Chelan County, Wash., after authorities tracked down their father's abandoned car near where their bodies were discovered, PEOPLE previously reported. Decker, a former military man, remains on the loose according to local authorities, who provided a description of the father over the weekend as the search began. Here's what we know. The Wenatchee Police Department said in a statement over the weekend that Paityn, Evelyn, and Olivia were all supposed to be with their father for a planned visitation over the weekend. 'The visitation was part of a parenting plan, but he has since gone outside the parameters of it which is not normal and cause for the alarm,' police said. The girls were last seen on May 30 and found dead on Monday, June 2, two days after police first launched their public manhunt. Police have said the 32-year-old Decker has former military experience and should be approached carefully, PEOPLE previously reported. 'It is unknown whether Decker is currently armed, but he may pose a significant risk,' police said in a statement in recent days. The Wenatchee Police Department said in its May 31 missing persons alert that Decker has recently been 'homeless and living in his vehicle or at various hotels/motels or at campgrounds in the area.' At 5-foot-8 and 190 pounds, Decker was last seen wearing a light shirt and dark shorts. He was also most recently wearing his black hair in a ponytail, according to police. Authorities discovered Decker's pickup truck near the Rock Island Campground in Leavenworth, Wash., where the three sisters' bodies were discovered, local Fox 13 reported. According to the outlet, investigators found two bloody handprints on Decker's truck while inside there were items like a blanket, food, and car seats for the girls. Police also discovered a wallet on the center console of the vehicle, according to Fox 13. Court documents obtained by the outlet also say that Decker's cell phone activity showed "he drove to and left the same campground a day prior to the kidnapping.' Decker has since been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of kidnapping, police have said. He is also facing custodial interference charges. A GoFundMe page set up for the girls' mother, Whitney Decker, has described the girls' deaths as 'heartbreaking.' "We are heartbroken to share that the girls have since passed ... the pain of this loss is immeasurable," organizer and friend Amy Edwards wrote. "I've known Whitney for years, we're both dance moms and theater friends [and I've] had the privilege of teaching Whitney's girls." The GoFundMe has raised nearly $400,000 in recent days. Edwards says the 'funds raised will go directly to Whitney to help cover final expenses, support time off from work, and give her space to heal without financial pressure.' 'Thank you for keeping Whitney and her girls in your hearts,' the family friend added. Read the original article on People

The Likely Cause of Death for Travis Decker's 3 Daughters Was Revealed. It's Chilling

The likely cause of death for the three daughters of missing father Travis Decker has been revealed. A massive manhunt is underway for Decker, who sheriff's officials believe murdered the three girls. They are Olivia, 5; Evelyn, 8; and Paitlyn, 9. The girls disappeared after being transferred to their father for a visitation. Decker, who is divorced from the girls' mom Whitney Decker, is at large. He is a native of Pewaukee, WI. The release of the likely cause of death paints a chilling picture of the girls' last moments. Be forewarned that it's very disturbing. There is a GoFundMe page set up to help the girls' mother. There is also a Facebook group devoted to remembering the girls with positive stories. A preliminary report filed with Chelan County Superior Court in Washington State revealed that the three girls "appeared to have died from asphyxiation," Fox13 reported. According to NCWLIFE, extremely disturbing police affidavits filed in court further say that the "girls' wrists appeared to have been zip-tied and their heads hooded with plastic were wearing the same clothing they had on when they left their mother's home." They were found down an embankment near Rock Island Campground, the site reported. The Facebook group devoted to remembering the girls has many heartfelt tributes to them. "I coached Paityn in baseball and basketball. She was such an athlete and I was looking forward to watching her play FC soccer with my daughter this summer. Not all kids have grit but Paityn did. She tried hard and she wanted to win," wrote one man on the comment thread. "We went to church together and I got to play with Paityn & Evelyn at the nursery! I loved seeing the girls on Sundays with their matching outfits!" a woman wrote. "Okay, first of all, they were the most well-behaved, polite kids in the world. I called them the sunshine kids because they was always just so smiley and happy to be there," read another tribute. "A joint operation including regional, state, and federal law enforcement agencies continues in Chelan County in search of Travis Decker. Travis is suspected of kidnapping and murdering his three young daughters this past weekend," the Chelan County Sheriff's Department wrote in a statement. "A reward of up to $20,000 is available for information leading directly to Mr. Decker's arrests. The suspect is not known to be armed at this time, but should be considered dangerous," authorities added. According to Fox 13, the documents say that Decker's vehicle was found near the bodies "with two bloody handprints, and had personal items such as blankets, food, car seats and a wallet on the center console." A tent and cooler were nearby at a campsite, the television station reported. CCSO detectives and deputies "were able to gather information that led them to search the Icicle Rd area of Leavenworth, WA in hopes of locating Travis Decker and his three daughters," the Sheriff's Department wrote. "Around 3:45 p.m. yesterday (June 2), a CCSO Forest Service Deputy, conducting patrol on his motorcycle, located Mr. Decker's vehicle in a remote area, approximately 17 miles up the road, ultimately discovering the three deceased children and Mr. Decker was nowhere to be found." Decker "is currently wanted for 3 counts of Murder 1st degree and Kidnapping 1st degree," the Sheriff's office continued. "Decker is a former Military with extensive training. If you have seen him, or believe to have seen him, within the last several days, please contact 911. It is unknown if he is armed at this time but he should be considered dangerous and should not be contacted or approached." The Sheriff's Department released this information on Decker: Travis Caleb Decker 8/15/1992 5'8' 190lbs, Black hair, brown eyes. Last seen wearing light colored shirt and dark shorts, On Friday, May 30 at 9:45 p.m., the Wenatchee Police Department "responded to a Civil Complaint. The mother of three young girls reported her daughters not being returned following a planned visitation with their father. The girls involved were ages nine, eight, and five years old. The father of the children has been identified as 32-year-old Travis Decker, of the Wenatchee area," the agency wrote. The Likely Cause of Death for Travis Decker's 3 Daughters Was Revealed.
